okay guys i just wanted to let you know i have begun a Multiplayer modification that will alow users to play final fantasy online. Right now i have a team writing the netcode the way it will feature is this.
you play as a 3 man team which you will pick when you logon to the servers provided. Each player will have an option of free roam with a friend and will explore the world as a party taking on monsters etc.
the next is a battle mode yes you guessed it you will face off against your friends or enemies to find out who is the better player. We are trying to work the sync issues to as small as possible.
we are currently looking for a beta test team which will consist of about 10 people this will be our quality assurance team.
The current slate for the release of this mod is yet undecided our team is putting together a website and a text file with everything you can do possible.
As far as it stands it looks like this
Playable characters cloud, barret, tifa, aries, nanakai, cid, vincent, cait sith and more to follow including dyne, sephiroth and zack
summons we are hoping to achieve all summons and magic usable but due to sync issues this may not be possible.
We will have dedicated servers and server integration with a favorites, filter list etc.
If any one would like to join the team or be a beta tester please let me know i am on msn at [email protected]
We will release more details in the next couple of weeks
Kind Regards Wayne (director of final fantasy 7 online)

Forgive me for saying this, but that sounds like a load of bullshite.
From what ive seen the best modders of FF7 exist on this website alone, and none of them can match up to anything near what you are suggesting. So please explain just how it is you expect to achieve this wondergaming miracle?.
-
He might be onto something...
Hes just beginning, I doubt its anything that good right now, but who knows? Just joining this site doesn't make you better. Look at me! =D
The worst thing that can happen is him so send us viruses through e-mail. Anyways its better than the gray chocobo, and flying to the moon to save Aeris.

Actually I’ve already done it.
But in essence you are correct.
I highly doubt they can get anywhere near what I have done, even if they are a team.
And I know for a fact the things they will be doing will be based off research from this site, including things I myself have contributed.
We will have dedicated servers and server integration with a favorites, filter list etc.
Mine allows anyone to host; the client is a server. This way it can’t be shut down.
Which leads into my last point.
You will be shut down by SquareEnix Co. Ltd., if they find out about your project.

Actually I’ve already done it.
Was it an actual FF7 Mod, or just a mini game type thing?
Also did you do it with asembly? because i always thought networking and that would be insanely difficult, please explain it a little bit. PM me if you would rather not give away anything you dont want known.

Much of my work is somewhat known.
I rewrote most of the Final Fantasy VII engine to use the game’s native files (original game must be installed for mine to work) in C++ and ASM.
By rewriting the entire engine I have complete control.
I added high resolution for all modern computers, 16× Anti-Aliasing, etc., for DirectX 9.0c.
It is however incomplete and non-distributable.
Some screens and information can be found in this (http://forums.qhimm.com/viewtopic.php?t=4318) or this (http://forums.qhimm.com/viewtopic.php?t=4270) topic.
My program is entirely external and is its own .EXE. It just knows how to load the files from Final Fantasy VII.
But there are certain things that are incomplete, since even we of this site have not finished hacking them yet.
Field files, for one.
The 3-D overworld for another.

Ah okay, i had heard of that project before. but didn't know that it was going to be multiplayable.
Why not develop a seperate game altogether and not let the code go to waste, or is it much too dependent on ff7 resources? You could even take the suggestion that i gave before about letting the online community develop the content.
It would be a very cool game, but im kinda curious as too just how many players such a game could handle.

Off-topic, feel free to ignore
I highly doubt they can get anywhere near what I have done, even if they are a team.
I wonder if modesty is genetic or learned trait. :P
-
heh, is it possible that it could be gained by both ways?
I dont know much about genetic's (if anything), but would't genetic's be more on the physical side rather than psycological?

Not entirely sure I know what you are asking.
It depends on the original game’s resources because distributing those resources violates copyright.
And because I don’t want to remake all the models/files.
And because I like the original how it is; my intent is just to add smoother play and online gaming.

Don’t know yet.
I wonder if modesty is genetic or learned trait.
Actually my burst is not of lack of modesty (in fact, I have plenty of that) but in spite.
I am not saying either one is better, but trying to be clear on my motivation for textual output.
Actually what I said is a lie; I think they can get done what I have done, but I admit to being spiteful about them trying to take up my own project (not for any specific reason mind you, and it isn’t dwelling inside me either).
It is no problem; the ocean is free for all swimmers.
That moment was just a short burst of spite which has since met its end.

Not entirely sure I know what you are asking.
If you were to develop a game not dependant on the ff7 resources out of the code you have already made. How feasible would the idea be if you left the development of the models and world up to the online community.
A FF style online game with no links to FF that will not result in you getting your butt suied.
So basically, would this be feasible or not?
-
Using my code, such a thing can be accomplished by replacing your game’s models the same way all these patches work.
Support for any other model/animation format has to be coded, as one would expect.

Sounds like you did alot of work on it. Do you have anyplans for it? or would you rather just get on with other stuff.
-
If I get my flare for programming back, I will restart the project from scratch to make it more professional in coding.
This is some of my earliest coding here, probably 5 years old by now.
But my flare for programming has seemingly totally diminished. I just don’t enjoy it anymore.
That’s actually part of why I got promoted at work and do less making and more telling.
I have also stopped all my other projects, for the same reason, including Memory Hacking Software.

L.Spiro: I got into same mood for last two-three months, but you have to fight it back. I do not want to give up programming, I just don't have the will/ apetite for it. Now its getting back slowly, so I can continue on my projects.
Just fight it back if you want to enjoy it once again.

To be hounest it would be perfectly ok we have sent repetead emails to square with regards to this multiplayer modification but still not a reply but then again its only been the last two days the email has been sent.you just have to look multi theft auto they was not suied due to the face it was approved as a mod like i said we going to try and achieve miracles with square and if all goes well there should be a trailer up with what we have done so far in the next couple of weeks.
-
edit-- ah shit sorry for the double post, accidently clicked post twice
-
Only problem is Square is harsh and quick to destroy anything that may provide competiton for they're products. If they could find a way to shut down current modding they would.
-
well thats why we are holding a closed beta with not much infromation going out and if square do not approve then it will be distributed to a small amount of people only.
i have great respect for square and have told them this it wont be like a lifechanging mod but it will be worth thte wait i cannot understand why they wouldnt approve like everything else on here they may want to sue some other people for there work.

One reason only - Money, there is no money to be made from a game with infinite replayability, unless it has a monthly subscription fee. Alot of pc rpg games go down due to lack of funding for example the creater's of Systemshock2, Baldurs gate, Fallout series. Too much replayability in a game create's no need for a newer product. Also fear of competition modders are getting more and more talented providing mods next to the original product in quality - Especially total conversion mods like counter-strike, why else would sierra be so quick to buy them out.
-
By “borrowing†their brand and making a—as you say—popular mod, they will then be forced to compete with themselves.
Not only will they not get money from this venture but they couldn’t even create a similar product and sell it, since yours will always be out cutting profits from their new one.
Why would anyone play theirs when yours is free?
Of course they are going to see it as an attempt to capitalize on their property, and they will shut you down.
Chrono Trigger was not resurrected.

The screenshots on the lniked topics don't function anymore, could you post em again?
-
I recall seeing those screen shots a long time ago, but I wasn't aware that you coded all that stuff yourself, L.Spiro.. I just thought it was some kind of mod.
You amaze me, sir.
-
l spiro your absoloutly right mate but like you said what if we where to make it based on yours with your permission to have the client always host the server and not do a dedicated server.
What do you think then ???
Kind Regards

I think it’s still very dodgy and you still have to stay low to the ground.
Even talking about it right now is poking my own head over the dirt, increasing the risk my own project gets canned.
Generally I would have advised to keep the whole project quiet, complete it all, and spread it out before anyone from SquareEnix could catch on. Having clients also be able to host is just intended to make sure that once it is out, it can’t be stopped. Running central servers means all they have to do to stop you is shut down one computer (or a few).
But you already pointed them in your direction via e-mails, which will probably never receive replies or receive negative replies.
If it does receive a negative reply, you would be in real trouble if you then completed the project anyway.

I have now updated all links in that thread that are my own.
