Title: FF7 Lock-up/crash :(
Post by: LordMelkor on 2006-06-26 10:48:43
I just beat Gaea's Cave, and I climbed up a mountain and a cut scene with this huge whirlwind like thing at the top of the mountain played, but then at some point during that video... the video freezes but the sound continues, and I am unable to do anything, unless I end the process tree for FF7.exe (I can the ctrl+alt+del thing only because I use FF7w, but the problem occurs even without it, after which I have to press the power button on my computer to be able to do anything).  In attempts to fix the problem I copied the videos to my hard drive and changed the registry and such as necessary, and then tried again and the problem still occurred (I know that it was running from the HD because the video loaded faster, and I didn’t hear the CD drive start up).  I then found the video that I was locking up on and ran it in Winamp and to my surprise after the part where I lock up in game the video just turns to a black screen for a long while. I’ve never played FFVII before but I just have a feeling that that isn’t supposed to happen… so my guess is that the video is corrupt…

--I even put in an incorrect folder for the movies so that nothing would play during the movie sequence (that worked for the intro sequences where I could just skip over the black screens) but the screen just stayed black for over 5 minutes so taking away the video didn’t work either (it was a long shot).

Is there anyway that I can bypass this sequence?

(I do kinda wanna know what happens at that part cuz I’ve never played the game before but whatever… another solution could be for someone to send me their working version of the video. It is on Play Disc 2 (Disc 3 including install disk), the file name is greatpit.avi it goes black for me at 17 seconds… curiously if I skip to 18 seconds in Winamp then the rest of the video plays out…)

-thx

One way is to install Gypt (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=5124.msg68646#msg68646) and skip the FMV as soon as it starts. If it crashes at the begining of the FMV (so you're not fast enough to skip it), change the registry path to point to non-existing directory and (after running FF7) press Ctrl+S when you see black screen.

 thanks a lot that worked perfectly!  now a few questions, what does the "turn lights on" feature do, and 2 can you make a patch/modify gypt such that ctrl+hotkey brings up the save menu? That would work very nicely in conjuntion with FF7w's "save anywhere" feature!

On another note whenever i play FF7 there is always a black bar at the bottom of the screen (or window if im using FF7w).. is this normal? (on the world map weird stuff happens where the black bar usually is...)

Sometimes, skipping FMVs will result in a black screen - use that hotkey to be able to see anything.

I'm sure it would, but saving anywhere isn't "safe" (heh, just like forcing FF7 to skip the movie).

Define "normal" :P
