Title: problem with ff7.exe is v1.02
Post by: sephi69 on 2006-09-09 19:17:18
Hello
I'm playing on windows XP (I open the game with 98) .I have a big problem with FF.v1.02  . I can install the patch , I select  RIVA 128 and 3D Accelator Hardware in the configurations ...
But when I run the game , the screen immediatly become black (nothing more , not "message" for FF7 to say that there is a probleme) , I can do nothing (escp and the others thing  as ctrl/alt/del don't work)

What can I do ? I must use  ff7.exe  v1.02  for installing the sephiroth patch... so I must find a solution , can somebody give me a solution ?

Have you tried pressing enter, as with the 1.02 patch the opening movie doesn't always work.
If you have the default keypad layout, you'd actually want to press start to skip past the opening videos. Unfortunately, you can't skip the in-game movies this way.

Have you tried the upside down movie patch? That seems to help with this problem sometimes.

Heyy,
Upside-down movie patch can be found here

http://www.ff7-universe.com/Downloads/ff7moviepatch.zip
if that doesn't work just go to http://www.ff7-universe.com/Downloads/
and find the patch in the list

goodluck!  :-D

Try unchecking the "nvidia" checkbox, and see if it still lets you select hardware mode. If so, you have the "nvidia patch doesn't work when 8 bit paletted textures ARE supported" bug.

It will probably run, but most likely with screwey gfx.

I have try to uncheck the "nvdia" and the problem still.
To select the hardware mode , I must check the "nvdia"... (so I select RIVA128 , the only renderer i have is " Direct 3D Hardware Acceleration , I suppose it's the hardware mode i you talking about ? correct me if im wrong).
The read me say i must select RIVA ...but it doesn't work ...

I open my game with windows 98 , must I use another ?
what is "screwey gfx." and where can i find it (on my computer , on the web ?) can you explain me please
Im french , excuse my english please
thank you very much for your help

Have you tried it with TNT instead of RIVA selected?  I *always* use TNT, I'm not sure if the RIVA option does what you need on modern cards.

I also had this problem when I first started the game. so maybe this i can help. What i had to do was right click go into your display properties. Once in properties navigate to the last tab which should be settings. open settings and find the advanced button. After you click advanced it will bring up another set of tabs navigate to hte troubleshoot tab and click it, in this section it will have an option hardware acceleration you want yourhardware acceleration at full or one hash mark away. It worked for me

You right click while nothing is open on your desktop the last option will be properties. Then just follow the directions above.

There is now another problem .

My screen become black, and the application leaves immediately .There is no error message, explaining why final Fantasy has to leave for such or such reason .I tested all the "levels" of the harward acceleration , this is the only results for the for the 4 more "has left" (on the bar) and for the 3 more "has right" they don't change the first problem (a black screen where i can't do nothing).
Anybody has an idea of what I can do ?

Look. Forget about the TNT patch....
Get the game working in Software mode, first....then you can mess around with the TNT patch.
Recommend reinstalling and going from there...

(Another thing to note.... the game only works from the CD-rom that you installed the game from.)

And for starters...go into Dxdiag and turn off Sound Acceleration...put it into basic mode. Full Sound Acceleration sometimes causes this problem....depending on what soundcard and drivers you have.

(and if this is some type of BS torrent file.....then you are on your own... FF7 uses windows regestery to find where the movies are located.... If it can't find them.....you get that black screen)

That's probably your problem.  As far as I can tell, TNT and RIVA are for nVidia.

1. Uninstall FF7
2. Remove all codecs (not joking), restart Windows
3. Install FF7 with movie player (from install screen), restart could be necessary
4. Install 1.02, set Direct3D
5. Try and run it. If it's just black screen and nothing happens, goto step 7
6. If it leaves immediately, turn that hardware acceleration up so it gets you a black screen problem
7. If black screen problem persist, install upside-down movie patch (search for upside-down (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=2670.0))

At the end, there should be an Eidos logo. If there is still a black screen, follow that list again. Codecs can be installed again after you get FMVs working.

Now, for your problem. You were probably unable to skip the black screen (eidoslogo is supposed to run here) because you have a laptop and there is no numpad enter (the "standard" enter doesn't work). Try pressing Fn button (if you have it) with enter, or any other key that has enter label. You can also use laptop keypad patch (umm... you're on your own finding it) or just buy a decent USB joypad.

Just on question
what is a "condec" and how can I uninstall them please ?
what is "direct 3d" (where can I find it , what must i do with it ?)

i will try your solution when i will know that , thank you very much for your answer i hope it will help me .

Codecs (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec) - like K-Lite Codec Pack. Direct3D is hardware acceleration (as opposite to software rendering) and can be picked in FF7Config program (for modern cards, after choosing the nVidia fix).

Most people have success with TNT. Even on my old Riva card, I did better with TNT.

You may want to look for ffdshow. A google search will find it, and it seems to work well for anything.

(For future reference, there is no 'n' i codec)

Direct Sound Accelertion
Dxdiag Instructions....

In the "Run..." menu of Windows. (It's in the Start Button....)
Type: Dxdiag
In the text box...and press OK.

A program will load up.... Go to the Sound Tab.... there will be a slider bar.... move it until you see it say something about Basic mode. Should be the second notch from the left. I had a problem with FF7pc on my PC, and putting it on basic mode worked for me.

As for codecs and all that jazz.... I don't know anything about that stuff. I know what they are... But I don't know how you can remove them from WinXP. Honestly....I don't think there is any simple way of doing it. Win98 I know of a way....but not WinXP. But, if the movies play in window's mediaplayer.... then most likely they'll play in the game, too. They may not play very well... Could be a slideshow in-game.... But, I would gamble to guess that the Video Codecs are not the cause of a Drop to Desktop, in such a case.

Note about the TNT patch: The TNT patch isn't a Nividia patch...not really. What it really is, is a 8bit pallet disable patch. The TNT patch only works with video cards that FAIL the 8 bit pallet test. If the 8 bit pallet test says PASS, the TNT patch will not work. So...if your TEST screen in the FF7config program says PASS for that test.... then the TNT patch isn't going to work for you. I'm not familar with ATI... but it's the same for those cards, too. Also, beaware, this is only for Hardwaremode... Doesn't matter with Software mode. So, get the game working in Software mode before messing with Hardware mode. Or you'll just compound your errors and will never find the cause.

Also be aware, it's not really the video cards that control whether the test reads Pass or Fail, it's the video drivers. So it could be that updated video drivers, will fix it, too. (again this is for Hardware mode.....get Software mode working first.)

After all these errors I keep hearing about keep popping up, I'm amazed at how I installed and ran mine without any problems.

Is there a reason, or just sheer luck?

He wasn't experiencing crashing to desktop until he started playing with hardware acceleration. Black screen with no error message means that Duck TrueMotion2.0 codec wasn't installed properly. It doesn't matter if movie itself is viewable with WMP or any other player.

Having a laptop with no NumPad_Enter key makes it hard to get to main menu, but then again - to start a new game, intro must be played first - this filter have to be installed properly in order to play.

To install/uninstall codecs (filters) you use regsvr32.exe, but I'd just look for codec packs in Add/Remove and uninstall them (I doubt that he installed faulty codecs with regsvr32).

GREAT it works !!!!!
Thank you all , I can try to install the sephy patch
thanks !!!!!!!!!!

 - Edit -
In fact I have only a problem with the "ff universe" version and not with the french version (give on the subject of the forum).
But unfortunatly , the "ff universe" version is the only version aviable to install the sephiroth patch that I want to install .

So I must resolve the problem with the english version.
I have try to unistall the game and all the codecs
I have make all the thinks to do with dxdiag for the sound
I have pass the game in TNT
I have try to  apply the upside-down patch
But the problem still ...the same black screen where i can't do nothing , with computer or with joystick , to escape ...

I have notice that in FF configurations/ graphics , in the "required 3D features for Direct 3D"  all the options carry the inscription "pass" opposite of each one ...but there is an exception :
8-bit Paletted Textures dont have "pass" but have "---"

Do you think that I have a problem with this option ? Do you think  that this can make party of the problem? If yes, what can I make "required 3D features for Direct 3D"  become "pass" ?
Thank you very much to explain me in details how to do .
thanks

Pretty much all cards will fail on 8-bit palleted textures. The whole point of the 1.02 patch is so that you can run it anyway.

The best advice I can give you is to run in software mode, as it is generally less buggy and more reliable.
Title: Re: problem with ff7.exe is v1.02
Post by: sephi69 on 2006-09-18 16:31:31
If i pass in software mode (and so leave NVDIA) the resultat  8-bit palleted textures is not "...." but "fail"
so it's not a good solution for me.
somebody has another idea please ? I suppose that having "pass" is the solution to pass the problem

 - Edit -
I will lose my internet connection (in wifi durings the holidays in my family ) tomorow at minight (in 24hours )so please if you have a solution to my problem  give it quickly ...
thanks

Have you seen the "Required 3D Features for Direct3D" caption above that pass/fail list? Do you think that having a "pass" in 8-bit paletted textures is vital when using Software mode?

Ok, as for your current problem... Use French ff7.exe! File names can be changed so the English version will work in the end, but that's not something you'd want to do.

Just wait until it's compatible with French version.
