Title: The Remake Project: updates
Post by: ficedula on 2001-10-25 20:23:00
OK, I'm afraid not much work has got done on the Remake recently ... I guess a lot of us have been starting uni/school again for one thing. However, we *do* have something you might find useful; go to

http://hal2k.no-ip.com:9880/ficedula/ffr/

for a *very* small site. Doesn't contain much that hasn't already been posted on this forum but the good thing is that the site is hosted on the server in my living room (hehe) so it gets updated automatically. In other words, if I do some coding in Delphi on the new engine, the news script picks out new items from my Delphi work log and posts them on the automatically, without me having to do a thing. Hopefully this means you'll actually SEE updates on the site

I am hoping to start work on my projects (including the Remake) sometime next week...my latest piece of coursework is due in on Monday, so that's all over with one way or the other soon.

Open source? That's not exactly planned at the moment. The source will be available to anyone in the project, of course. File format descriptions for most of our own file formats will be released too, of course. At some point in the future, we may release source code. Some parts of it will be released anyway, actually; for example, Delphi3D will be interested in certain elements of it (the OpenGL rendering code rather than the game code, basically).

FGP ... well, we need our own archive file format. Or at least, it makes life easier if we have our own file format that supports things like compression (better than LZS compression!). So, FGP is the archive file format the engine uses.

Wow! I like the look of the new swirl effect fice!

So we finally have our own file format! I hope you release the de/compressor with the next Alpha so we can do some of our own work.

I'm trying to get my models done so I can begin work on a FMV trailer of some kind... Or at least 1 specific scene I have stuck in my head. Belive me! I'm gonna find a way to get that scene into the game!

Damn broken HD... I'll be up and running tomorrow. (I hope.)

Someone hasn't been paying attention  The (de)compressor's been available to all members of the Remake project for quite a while now. The link to it should still be in the Remake forum somewhere ....

Whohoo ! I see you've been workin' on that Field / Battle System. Looks really fine! Good Work!

Hm, there are no textures on Cloud's Head in fieldtest.jpg ... huh, is that my fault b'cause not having hacked the .p format enough? I guess I've got to work on that format... but for the next 2 weeks: I've got some important test at school, so won't have too much time...

Wow, those look great. I like the way you've put loads of dodgy text everywhere; "In a land far, far away...". Just wondering, did you code all of that from scratch? I know you must've taken some bits from the game, but if you did that without copying it straight from the game files, I am really impressed.

Alhexx: Yup

eerrrr: Well, the game *code* was completely written from scratch by me, of course ... no way to rip code (reliably) from FF7.EXE. The graphics were taken from the original, of course

Well, what should I say Ficedula, I would like to take part of the remake project, but I don't know what is going on so far.  By that I mean, how much is done, what parts are still need to be made.  I am a programmer, I wouldn't say I'm a beginner, but I don't know how good my abilities would be.  I just downloaded the only documentation that you have on your website, but it doesn't provide enough information, especially about the coding.  I have to admit that I just started using C++ a few months ago, but I am improving.  I have experience in other programming languages though (sufficient experience).  I would like to know how long this would take, because I don't want to be left out of this project.

As far as the story, I have pretty neat ideas.  There should be a thread where "we, the unpriviledged people" could write our ideas about the story publicly, and have the "priviledged people" read those ideas.  That way everyone would have something to express.

By the way, for anyone who collects anime and burns them on CD.  I am designing my own CD labels (I could not find any suitable picture for CD labeling), so far I made two DNA^2 cd labels.  For anyone interested in getting the pics especially designed for CD labeling, write me an e-mail (Just check my profile), and I'll send you those.

Well, programming wise, we need more programmers, but they don't have to be incredibly experienced. Beginners, no, but even if you've only got a moderate amount of experience, that's fine ... there are other things still need doing.

The main engine is written totally in Delphi ... which I guess could be a problem for people who don't know object Pascal  That said, I *might* well be able to get it working under C++ Builder. Plus, the main engine isn't the only thing that needs programming.

Well, all I can say is, show us an example of what you can program (email it to the SaiNt I guess, he's more-or-less in charge of the project) and we'll decide whether we can use you for anything

Timewise ... this is gonna take quite a while. The parts of the engine completed are the *easy* ones (ha) ... battle engine will take a lot longer, plus actually creating the storyline files - major proposition.

I was wondering if the game will be on sale  or if its freeware . And are you going to make a port to any consoles (That's sort of a stupid question, isn't it?)

Freeware, obviously. It's dodgy even making it, but if we try to sell it I'm sure Square will sue our a$$es.

Console ports..? Somehow I doubt it.

yeah a console port would be impossible since the dev kits would cost a lot and nocompany would approve of sending their dev software to so many different people. Plus there is the square issue
kowing them theyd take it off you and sell it as there own.

Alright, I'll try to do something interesting.  Just don't expect me to make a program just like Qhimm does.  It'll take me sometime though, I'll have to go over my books.

By the way, Everyone who is in charge of this board and the Remake project PLEASE READ:  I request permission to post a thread in which all members can post ideas for the Remake project story.  I don't think it should be a problem, because those ideas would not officially be part of the story.  I am saying this because I think there are really talented people with creative ideas that may not have a chance to be heard.  Please respond as soon as possible, thank you.

So start a thread in the general board. There's nothing stopping you. I'd actually like to hear some people's ideas. So far, I've been the only one (recently) who's been working on the story. (At least, I'm the only one who's been posting their ideas...)

In some ways, I guess you could probably call me the Lead Story Designer. I'm also the self-appointed FMV Director/designer/animator.

Kinda cool, huh?

OK, fixed.

Problems with Hal2K shouldn't happen so much in the future ... yesterday we had to take it down quite a few times to try and fix some problems, but I *finally* got its soundcard working last night, so we can watch DivX's on the big screen TV  Now *that's* up, the server should be online pretty much constantly, which hopefully means less problems with the site.

TV aerial goes thru splitter that connects to TV in card on server (Hal2K). Hal then runs Windows Media Encoder that broadcasts video & audio data over network as a live video stream. Voila!

Site: Yup, just noticed that  SHould be able to fix it now.

does the server support php?

This would be better done like this...

with this you can replace shader. jpg with a thin line

I doubt it's got PHP at the moment, but since it's our server we can do whatever we want to it.

It has got limited bandwidth though; firstly, ADSL is asymmetric (more download bandwidth than upload); secondly, we do use the connection for other things  The current site doesn't task it at all, but I'm not sure whether we could (say) host a popular message board or anything like that on it.

The HTML ... yeah, that'd be better but shader.jpg is less than 2KB already!... doubt you'd actually see any difference. I really should learn styles, but HTML's not really my forte.
