First:
You should at least say what game you are talking about.
(Well, taking a look at your problem description, and thinking about that I had the same problem, too, I guess you're talking about FF7 :D)
Second:
Yes, you are missing a codec.
The reason why the screen stays black when you start the game is that your pc is not able to play the Square® intro. The reason why it stays black after selecting "New Game" is that you pc is not able to play the game intro video.
Unfortunately, I don't remember which codec you should install...
Use the search function (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?action=search) and search for "codec".
Good luck.

At least I see that you are able to use the (http://forums.qhimm.com/Themes/default/images/english/modify.gif) button...

Well I looked around on other forums and I ended up deleting a codec by instruction, instantly after that I installed the 1.4 patch (xp)
Everything seems to work, now the problem is trying to install the High Resolution patch ;)
I patch correctly but when I go into the game it stays at the default.

No! No! No! No! No! No!
NEVER INSTALL THE 1.4 PATCH!
-
Update:
Ive installed the 1.2 patch - Resolution - and all works fine only.
That I crash when a battle starts.
-
Have you pressed Alt+Tab before the battle? There is a bug that causes battles to crash if you've alt+tab'd at any point while running FF7. Somebody here has a patch for it, but I don't know where.
-
Hmm I may have yes. Well Im certain it is not all the time, maybe that was just a one of occerunce.
-
Are you already running it under win95 compatibility mode?
