Title: Low Wattage Graphics Cards (below 150?)
Post by: Darkness on 2006-12-04 19:23:06
I'm looking for a graphics card with very very low power requirements for a project.

Any suggestions?

Below 150 watts?

That's not really very very low, I suppose that most older cards are below it. :-P

Anyway, results of a quick peek at Anandtech found this (http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2874&p=20). It would seem that the 7600 GS uses 139 watts under full load.

I suppose that almost any AGP or PCI card would fit the description as well, since they didn't really have extra power connectors back then, and I'm fairly sure that neither bus can supply 150 watts... or anything close to it, even. Hey, you didn't say that it had to be fast or modern. :P

Really old PCI-cards that didn't even have heatsinks?

I'm not sure, but most of them didn't run particularly hot, even though they had no cooling to speak of.

Riva 128s did, however. They  (at least some of them) had no heatsinks, yet they radiated so much heat that you didn't dare to touch them after being on for some time.

But back to the question... S3 Trio64 and the like. They will be insanely slow, though. Not to mention that I am not entirely sure if driver support for XP - for example - exists.

EDIT: Check out this (http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000662.html) chart. If correct, it would seem to suggest that Anandtech was measuring the power consumption of the entire system. Which would seem to be supported by their wording, too. As silly as it is. :P

TNT2 = about 33 watts
Geforce 2 MX 400 = about 39 watts

These cards arent too shabby as well.

i got a Geforce 4mx agp kicking around.
I even have a ati rage 128 agp (doesnt have a heatsink - its that old, but needs testing).
And loads of other parts (due to a recent upgrade) if you need something...
