I also have a prob like yours. I just reformatted my pc and I reinstalled this game. (I only have the 1.02 patch right now and ff7 music) When it starts up it has the sound of the Edioes screen, but it just has a black screen. The computer then freezes and I can't even get the task manager to show up so I had to restart my pc :(
PS: I have the full install with the fmv's run off my HDD.
PS: my pc space are
CPU: AMD athlon xp 1800+
OS: Win XP (sp2)
MoBo: msi
Ram: 512MB
Video Card: Gforce 6600 GT (with latest Drivers)
Sound: Onboard With 5.1 creative sound system :D

Are you using the spanish version of the 1.02 patch? The original version (don't know if EIDOS has bothered pointing to the localized versions lately) was only for the US version.
-
Im using the englis version, and i think my ff7 is in english, should i try with the spanish patch?
-
hmm well if you think its the english version then the english patch should work but try uninstalling the game and reinstalling then putting the Spanish patch on
and uhh Steven, try it without ff7 music and see what happens

Is the english version and i'm using the englis patch =O, but im still having the problem

Install Omega drivers for your videocards. (go google it)

Have you solved it yet?
I had the same problem after installing the latest fddshow filter resp. latest K-lite mega codec pack. The screen was black and the sound of Eidos logo was heard. After that it freezes.
I solved it by disabling TrueMotion videos handling by fddshow filter like on this screenshot:
