Title: Linux!!!!
Post by: Darkness on 2001-11-08 23:27:00
Im making an attempt at installing linux on my old Pentium i486 (20mb ram, 203mb hd) and ive run into a problem. my cd drive is old. VERY old. like Creative Labs 2x old. It wan't being detected under Windows 95, so what are the chances of it being detected under linux? Ill mess with the wiring of th comp tonight when my download is done. any ideas?

Chances are that is not the operating system that has the problem, but BIOS.  You said that it wasn't detected by windows95.  Did the computer came with the CD-ROM drive or did you installed it?  But like I said, chances are that you need a more updated BIOS.  The CD-ROM won't work if it is not recognized by the BIOS.  I would have to guess that you are trying to install Linux by booting the installation CD.  What version of Linux are you talking about also?  If you wan't to be helped, you have to provide more information.  I am just assuming here, and I may not be giving you the correct information.  Also, take in consideration that not all devices are supported by Linux.  Maybe there is no driver for the CD-ROM drive to run under Linux.

Well... He's MOSTLY right. Plug-n-play CD-ROMs won't work unless detected by the BIOS.

More than likely, you just need to install some DOS drivers into your autoexec.bat & config.sys files on your C-Drive. It should work then. (I can give you more help/info if needed.) Win98 was the first to detect devices not listed in your BIOS that are connected to your motherboard, such as HDs & CD-Drives.

Sephiroth3D:  I have a 386 computer (it's so old you can't even run windows95 on it ), and I bought a very old CD drive to install it.  Well, I installed it and moved some jumpers around, but I found out that the BIOS the motherboard had didn't even support CD drives.  So maybe that could be the same case here.
If he wants to install Linux using the CD drive, it has to boot from the CD, and therefore the CD drive has to be detected before any other operating system is started.
But if the CD drive is detected by the BIOS, then all you have to do is find some drivers for that CD drive for Linux.  I don't know if there would be drivers for old CD drives that go into linux, but I do know that there are new devices that are not supported by linux because there are no drivers available for it.  I am still looking for a driver for my soundcard to work under linux.

I have a question:  What in blazing hell is a Pentium i486?

Hmmm... Good Point. That's impossible. It's either a Pentium or a 486...

Maybe its a chipset specification, like that Intel 3D accelerator chipset for motherboards.  It's called something like i740; can't remember the exact numbers.....

(re-reads Jari's post)

Oh, I suppose it could be that, but I think that upgrade chip didn't work to well, or sell for very long at that.  I don't remember hearing about it much....
