Title: FF7 on Vista (suggested hack not working for me)
Post by: springo on 2007-06-11 15:11:53
Hi,
I know you have already posted a solution, but it doesn't work for me. I installed FF7 after formatting my drive, on a clean Vista Ultimate 32bit.
Then I used patch 1.02, but it did not work. So I tried, to use the video patch which either installs very quickly, or does not work because after accepting license agreement, it shows the installation screen for less thank 1s. I didn't have ffdshow installed, so I guess that's not the problem.

My hardware:
Core 2 Duo T7200
NVIDIA 7900GS Go

What I got:
After clean install, I ran ff7.exe, screen went black, no response to input, no graphics, sound ok.
After 1.02, I ran ff7config.exe and set NVIDIA to TNT w/ Direct3D, then I ran ff7.exe, screen went black for about 3s and then the program exited. I tried RIVA128, same output.
The other patch made no changes to 1.02's output (at least as far as I got).

If you need anything else, please ask.
Thank you very much for your help.

Here's what I did to get it running on Vista on almost identical hardware (Core 2 Duo, GeForce Go 7900gs) with Vista Home Premium 32-bit

1) Installed FF7
2) Installed 1.02
3) Installed video codec (trumotion one. Maybe try compatibility mode on the installer?)
4) Disabled ffdshow for it
5) Set Win98 compatibility mode for ALL EXECUTABLES in the ff7 folder

Then it just worked. The only config change I made was, IIRC, changing from 320x240 to 640x480. I didn't touch the other stuff, it was already set up and working for hardware mode on the GeForce Go 7900gs.

>_> Lucky bastards, I still havent been able/not been bothered to mess about with the game to get it working on vista.

Im tempted to just say f*ck it and load a copy of win 98 onto the machine.

Do they even do 8800GTS drivers for win 98? <_<

Does it work if you switch it to software rendering?

I've got a GF8800GTS (driver 158.45) and Vista x64.
I installed FF7, truemotion codec, 1.02 patch, highres and NPC-RCP.
It works really fine for me, there's not 1 glitch or problem.

Well, I couldn't get it to work... I downloaded Virtual PC 2007 (free), new XP virtual machine, installed and there I had FFVII! I think it's software-rendering, but I have a decent FPS rate, so I'll do it this way. The only drawback is that you play in a 640x480 window inside your usual desktop. I'm going to try Hi-Res patch to get a bigger window...
BTW, it wouldn't work on software rendering mode either on Vista, but never mind, I'm happy with this fix :)

In that case, you can enable full-screen mode in Virtual PC.  I haven't tried the new version, but in Virtual PC 2004, there was an option hidden away in the preferences to adjust your host resolution to match your guest resolution when you go to full-screen, which will make FF7 nice and big.

Well, I just instaled Virtual PC 2007, and theres no support for windows 98! Noooooooooo ;_;

does that mean it can be installed, but just not work, or it physcially wont install?

Scratch that, Seems I missed the combo box for the selected OS.

>_> Win 98 has been installed and is running like a beuat, will try FF7 and 8 in a bit.
