i installed the game around a month ago from ISO-s that i had ripped from genuine discs
when i tried to run the game, AVG popped up with the message
Threat detected:
virus: I-Worm/Stration.DW
file: ff7.exe
and i try to do a re-installation, and the same bloody error comes up, when reading from the ISO
any idea what went wrong?

Have you tried installing from the CDs instead?
-
yes, and still the same problem
-
hey, i found the same bug today actually.
i installed it from the proper game disc and AVG says it's a virus.
i'm guessing there's a way that AVG antivirus sees the code and says it's a virus, whereas there probably isn't any at all.

in windows xp, is the icon for ff7.exe not look normal i.e. is it the generic exe icon used for DOS programs?
and im getting the "windows can't access the file, you may not have the rights" error, and there isn't even a security tab option (i have simple sharing disabled)
i managed a work around, by booting from virtual PC- win 98- and installing it there, but it is stil extremely annoying

In Windows XP you are logged on as the administrator right?
-
yes, i'm an admin
-
i realized that ididn't apply ANY patches, so i applied the 1.02 patch, and both the "virus detected" as well as "unable to access" errors went away
sorry to trouble you all with some of my stupidity

It's what's called a "false positive". Anti-virus programs have a list of programs that're viruses, and looks for those file names, or files which are LIKE the ones on the list. Then there's"heuristics" where an AV program will look for virus-like activity. In this case, i think maybe there's a virus going around either called "ff7.exe", and/or it shares other similarities (like file size).
People on the GameFAQs forum also noted that ff7 and the High Res patch were giving off false positives. *shrugs*
funny, i use AVG and i haven't gotten any of this yet, either.
