Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: Alhexx on 2001-11-21 13:53:00
Okay, I finally got Win XP Pro now. But that's not all: I'm gonna do a complete system cleanup, means formatting, change partitions, change file system to NTFS and install Win XP.

What I wanted to say is that I probably won't be online for some days. So, no need to worry (or at least I hope so...) :grin:

Heh. Think I need to upgrade, but I'll probably go up to Win2K rather than XP ... I can foresee major driver problems ahead if I went to XP.

My Graphics Card (Viper II) was not supported by Windows XP so I installed Windows 98 back on the computer so I could duel boot for my games and watching DVD's etc... and for everything else I use Windows XP.

I run Win2k Pro (Actual CD Edition!) and i love it. The stability of it is beyond compare. I hated XP for 1 major reason: Activation. Otherwise it was simply an updated Win2k.

Try to run this little proggy on your stable systems:

int main()
{
    printf("hung upttbbbbbb");
    printf("hung upttbbbbbb");
}

:lol:

But you probably already knew about that

As for me: I've chosen it b'cause of the stability. Well, my Win98 system liked to crash a feqw times per day, WinXP runs perfect 'till now.

BTW: Seph 3D: LightWave worx. So be happy to see an updatd Version of the LWO Converter/Exporter next Ultima version...

Oh, I've gotta d/l OpenGL drivers ... hehe, Ultima didn't want to work... b'cause it couldn't load the OpenGL.dll ...

As for the Activation: My Win XP Version doesn't want any activation or at least it doesn't tell me... and I can't remember cracking it...

Good! :grin: I was hoping there would be an update to your LWO converter soon. I can't wait until we can go from either to the other, and export animations and everything! I already have 2 characters I'm going to build an put into the remake... (And they're easter eggs!)

ppl, what are you doing with your systems ? I have oold win95, it is installed for about 1/2 year or more, im still gaming, programming, experimenting on it, and it won't crash more than once per 2 weeks.

Im probably lucky  lol

Well, if it worx, then everything's just fine. I was workin on Win95 as long as I could. But one day I bought an USB Joystick (Saitek ST200) and I had to install Win98 to make my system recognize it.
A few months ago my system got crazy and started to hang up and crash - well now all's fixed and I'm lucky :grin:

I have the Corporate Windows XP install CD (doesn't require activation) that I got through where I work (anyone want a copy? heh).

Tried to install it, it didn't like my OLD vid card or Wireless Network card.  But its worked perfectly on every other computer I've tried it on (friends, etc.).  The only problem is drivers for old devices... but one of my friends got his old SCSI Scanner to work by reinstalling a Win9x driver, so, wierd.

Anyway, does anyone know if FF7 works in Windows XP?  I heard it had compatibility problems with Win 2000 and I haven't tested it in XP yet.

Post by: Sukaeto on 2001-11-26 04:04:00
FF7 runs ok on some systems under XP, and it crashes on others.  It always crashes, no matter what, on the Chocobo races, though.  You'll probably want to put Win98 on some small, out of the way partition to play through the races.  (Either that or use some one elses comp.  I think I'm gonna make both my partitions NTFS when I get my new hard drive, and just play through the Chocobo races on my brothers comp.  He has Win95 OSR2.)

As far as that WinXP Corporate . . . is that WinXP professional, or is that some special version of WinXP that you have to have a site lisence for?

I have the home edition with a crack so later I'm going to equaip all the pc's on my network with it. You'd think that Microsoft would make it harder to crack the activation than that though.
Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: Jedimark on 2001-11-26 14:34:00
Heh heh, my mate cracked Windows XP and he had been running it for about a month and then I think what must have happened is that when he was connected to the Interent Microsoft detected that his copy was cracked and when he rebooted his machine XP told him to contact Windows customer services or somet.... which he didnt do... so he's back to Windows 98 now!

Im reluctant to lend out my XP CD if indeed Microsoft can detect these things.

The Windows XP Corporate I have is just Windows XP Professional (Build 2600... I think that's the newest) meant for businesses or comp building places and does NOT require activation.  I guess to legally use it, you need a site licence.  But all you need for it to work is a valid CD key (25 digit number thing all Windows versions have).

Heh.

Post by: Aaron on 2001-11-27 00:17:00
Oh yeah... about FF7 in Windows XP:
I read somewhere that you can tell XP whether to "emulate" a 9x, NT, or 2000 enviornment (I think 2000 was default) and you can custom this for different prorgams.  This was from someone's review of the XP beta.

Can anyone confirm or deny this, and if it is true, has anyone tried FF7 in 9x mode?
Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: Trilinear on 2001-11-27 00:34:00
You can use that compatibility mode with the final build of XP.  As to wether or not it makes FF7 work?  I seem to remember getting it working before I did a clean reformat and install, but I can't be certain if it did or not.  I'll get back to you about that in a few.

Darkness: XP is like Win2000. Runs on NT format, no dos (other than the command prompt) which means most dos games won't work on it.

heh... I did that back when I used my Voodoo2. It wasn't supported by W2k, so I used Win98 as my main OS, and kept W2k on so I could try and learn Maya. (Still need to do that...) But when I got my current Video card, I pretty much dumped Win98 and went with 2000 all the way. Now I'm almost regretting it, because I can't play my old DOS games anymore, such as Wing Commander Privateer, Warcraft 2, and my Fav game, FF7.

Half-Life/Counter-Strike has just been F*cked up too much for me to even TRY playing it anymore. I'm just gonna remove it from my system soon.

Aaron, I can play FF7 on Windows XP without Compatabilty Mode turned on, although I prefer to run it in Windows 98 where I have my grapics card supported.

I just got FF7 for the PC actually and I have a few questions:

1. Is it just my computer / my graphics card but a lot of the textures are bright green spoiling the game. (I can get a screen shot if ya want)

2. Bloody hell... how fast does the bike chase go compared to the PSX version!! Is there a way of slowing this down?

3. Are there any patches for FF7?
Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: M0T on 2001-11-30 12:17:00
There is a patch to run it on Nvidia cards, you should get that since most don't support 8bit palletted textures even though its now enabled in the drivers.
I think the problem with the bike chase is that your pc is too fast for the game. When I had a k6-3 400 with voodoo 2's it ran and the proper speed but now it is way to fast.

Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: M0T on 2001-12-01 19:06:00
well you shouldn't if it isnt an NVIDIA card. as for the bike chase there was a program that slowed your processor down so the games slowed down to the right speed but I cannot remember what it was called.
Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: ficedula on 2001-12-01 19:38:00
You most definitely can apply the "NVidia" patches whatever card you have.

It should really be called a "remove paletted textures" patch because that's what it does - removes the need for paletted textures. The patch lets me use my Radeon with FF7 fine (since it doesn't support paletted textures either).

If you have the 1.02 patch to FF7 it also lets you apply my patches like 32-bit colour etc, though that's not as big an issue :wink: The 1.01 and 1.02 updates do run fine on ANY card though, not just NVidia cards.

Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: ficedula on 2001-12-01 21:49:00
Afraid not ... they're hard to find now, IIRC Eidos doesn't have them on it's FTP anymore.

v1.01 is the Riva TNT patch.
v1.02 is the patch that support both the TNT and another NVidia card (can't remember which ... GF1? not sure)
Title: Got Win XP now...
Post by: Sephiroth 3D on 2001-12-01 22:07:00
Hah! I have both the Riva128 and the TNT version of the patch! But I've noticed that there isn't really a difference using an NVida card. I suppose I could email them to Fice so he could put them on his sever...

Oh, and I get funny purple and green lines in FF7 when I use them, but if you turn off Antialiasing, they go away.

I'm running WinXP Pro Corperate. It is the same as EVERY other version of XP Pro out there except you use a "Volume Licence Key". Therefore it does not need to be activated. (Can you imaging having to activate every machine in a 2000 machine company???). My machine is 4 years old and I have not had any problems with hardware (of course I have upgraded here and there).

It is by far the best Windows I have ever used and it is the MOST stable WINDOWS out there................... however that said if you want a really stable system try running Linux (kernal 2.4.x) and then run all your Windows program in WINE or VMWARE.

Linux rocks

Darkness: to your post on previous page, about dual booting: you can make dual boot to any system, when you have some boot manager, like OSL2000. It will give you choice what partition do you want to boot.

Don't even put a slash between 98 and ME....ME is an OS to stay away from....at all costs.

From what I can tell, Get XP if you never plan on looking back. Get 98SE if you plan on popping in those 2 year old and older programs.
