Title: Recognized something?
Post by: Alhexx on 2001-11-30 16:38:00
Has anybody who has visited a topic, in which a new-registered user has posted?

Well, take a look at this:
Tech-Related Topic (http://www.arcticnetwork.net/nextff/qhimm/viewtopic.php?topic=711&forum=4&20)

See the first post? Recognize something? Well, it's not in the post itself, it's got something to do with the user profile ...

No.... you've lost me!
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: Qhimm on 2001-11-30 18:14:00
He lost me too... Are you talking about the "Newbie" rank?
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: ficedula on 2001-11-30 18:16:00
I think he is ... after all, all the accounts that got transferred from the last board lost their rank.

Yeah but that bit isn't in the User Profile and Alhexx said:

I think he meant "info about the user" rather than the Official "User Profile".

Ok I see.... well I guess that phpBB can assign ranks to new members but old members that were transfered from a different message board system can't

edit: but look in the Feedback forum.... Qhimm's hinted there that the Ranks will be coming back with the new (much anticipated) style!

Post by: Darkness on 2001-11-30 21:05:00
yeah, the rank is probably assigned when a person registers.
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: Qhimm on 2001-11-30 23:13:00
The reason new users have ranks is because there is only one rank at the moment - Newbie. I started adding ranks, but never finished.

Question:  Why doesn't the signature option work?

The only person that I've seen that looks like he got the option working is Sephiroth 3D.
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: Darkness on 2001-12-01 05:31:00
it will probably work in the final design....
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: Qhimm on 2001-12-01 12:00:00
Or, perhaps even more likely, I have intentionally disabled it. I don't know how Seph3D does it, probably manually.

All: Yep, I've been talkin' 'bout the 'Newbie' Rank. (Sorry 'botu that 'User Profile' declaration...)

Qhimm: I've gotta correct you - it isn't the only 'Rank' ...
Well, everybody can see that you are an Administrator
Hm...but SaiNt doesn't seem to be :???:

However, riddle solved ...

 - edit -
Yeah, I'm goin' straight forward to the 'Freak' Rank.

BTW:
Qhimm: Will you use the stars from the old board - I liked them.

Title: Recognized something?
Post by: The SaiNt on 2001-12-01 12:55:00
Yep, no ranks are stored in the sql database at all.
Since qhimm only set the ranks for users with 1-20 posts,
only newbies have ranks.
Once they hit 21 posts, their rank will disappear.
If anyone would tell me the old post rankings, I'll add them to the database.

Title: Recognized something?

I think Qhimm should just carry on working on the new design instead adding stars and stuff to this one, I dunno, it's up to him. But at least I'm a freak again.  :isee:

Alhexx:  Cuddleswings was a massive spammer, not only that but all his/her posts were just made up of smilies so Qhimm reset him/her to 0 posts i think, he may have deleted him/her also but I cant remember.
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: ficedula on 2001-12-02 12:56:00
Ah, you young 'uns ... never learn your history properly ...

As I remember, Cuddleswing was Straywings sister? anyway, in order to reach the heady heights of Crazy Poster much posting of smilies was made. Qhimm duly reset the account to zero.

Hark and beware, all ye who would falsely attain thy rank through anything-goes smilies!
Title: Recognized something?
Post by: Ant on 2001-12-02 14:18:00
Hmmm. well I thought that Straywings was sister of Cuddleswings?
Could we have some confirmation on this subject please.

The one that was reset was the sister.

Aaron: I know just another method (b'cause I'm an Admin, too):

As an  Admin you're able to change the posts count how you want. You can set it higher, lower, to zero or even below. Whatever you want. And even if the PHP scripts don't allow that, you can simply access the FTP server and the member file, and edit it manually...

You can only change the files via ftp for cgi based boards.
For, Php boards, stuff is usually stored in an SQL database.
So, you have to edit the info from there.

Somehow, Joey, I really don't think a post reset would affect your status in our board at all.

'Sides, I think if Qhimm or SaiNt was going to reset your count that day would have come a long time ago...

post counts dont really matter. if it effects one's status that much, then they have a problem. It does, however, seem like a lot of work and time would be taken away.

Post counts don't really matter.

Have any of you been to FFWA's boards?
When they had a lot of spamming to deal with, the just deactivated the post count. The post count was still there, but it was only visible in the profile and on in the topic. It did prove to be quite effective in lowering the level of spam.

P.S. -
Just in case anyone doesnt know what spam exactly is, here's a pretty well used definition of it.

I'm sure you could calculate rankings based on post length and other such things; the only limiting factor would be someone actually writing the code to do that  Don't know whether Qhimm or SaiNt would have the time to do it.

Ranking based on posts usefulness is fairly cool, but the only way to do it is a self-rating system; the boards members each rate other peoples posts. Usually it'd be combined with a scaling system, so the higher rank you are, the more your opinion counts for than other people's (though not enough that it makes theirs useless, just a slight weighting difference).

If you're going with automatic ranking, the sensible thing to do would be:

-Ranking based on length, penalties for one or two word posts, bonuses for long ones (unless it's a *useless* long post of nothingness, in which case the mod steps in). Also not counting quoted text.
-Penalties for posting in a topic when the last person who posted was you. Chains of 8 messages all from the same person aren't very nice (the Edit button is good, people!)
-Still tracking raw post counts for the boards stats, and maybe users' profiles, just not calculating ranks directly from them.

Ficedula: Version 6 of Ultimate Buliten Board has a ratings system where by members can vote on a scale of 1 to 5 to say how useful / popular whatever a certain member is. Maybe that could be done? :erm:

sorry, it was just so tempting. I agree with the smiley thing, but not that capitalization. My shift sticks. sometimes i dont notice that im typing in caps. Besides, its still completely possible to get a point across in CAPS.

Off topic Edit: Woah.... on the eidos boards theres a person named abyss darkness that has a location similar to mine (look at my From: ) anywho, im not that person. thought you all should know, but wasnt worth making another post.
