Not too much difference between "1.04" ff7.exe and the official 1.02 ff7.exe. The keyword here is the intelectual theft. Oh, and there's also "replace files without user knowledge and/or approval" - all can be found in the forums.

Yes, the 1.04 patch edits the FF7.exe without users knowledge as dziugo says.  It is also from what I hear prime cause for some faults with the game on XP of all things.
I used it when I installed FF7 after a long long time, and thought I was doing something sensible.  However I experienced constant crashes and back to desktops.

I signed up here, read about it, put in the 1.02 (after too many questions asked on my part), and it worked perfect ever since.

The only patch I've heard of that fits the description is the infamous 1.04 patch.  Others have already explained why we don't use that.
There has been no need to make any version after 1.02.  It works on XP and Vista.  Other people have built patches to work with it.  Therefore there's no point making a new one until 1.02 physically doesn't work.  This could happen with the release of a new operating system, but even that won't happen for years.
