I feel like the videos are alot more compressed than the PSX counterparts. Is this just me? Also, could better quality videos replace the PC stock ones if the movie directory was changed in the registry?

A lot of stuff was decreased in quality for PC version, most likely including the FMVs. That's why I prefer to play the PSX version on my PSP :>

i think the quality of ff8 pc fmv's is a bit crappy because they used Bink video. and it did not provide a great video quality, at least in 1999/2000, when ff8 pc was released.
i also like psx version more. at least it works more reliably and 3d models don't look strange surrounded by low-res world textures ;-)

Yes, they are *definitely* compressed further.
Best bet is to play PSX version in ePSXe so that you can add shaders, increase the res etc. :3

Try run ff8config.exe, go to the "Graphics" tab and set "Movie Resolution" to High. ;)

For FF7, install Fidecula's cetra patch. It will force the movies to run in 32-bit color mode which will be much better.
Also you can enhance the fmvs by using virtualdub
Or replace the old fmvs with the newer clips from ac,cc and doc
There are many remakes of the old fmvs which can be found in advent children and crisis core:
- FF7 Opening
- Aeris's funeral
- Sephiroth surrounded by fire
- Jenova taken out from the reactor in Mount Nibel
- Meteor seen from space
- The Mako Gun gathers energy and shoots
- Rufus being shot by Diamond Weapon
If you have Advent Children in HD then in 320x224 resolution of ff7 movies they will still kick ass

According to recorded history (http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/History), Eidos was given the PSX's videos and told to just use them so they were compressed and re-coded to work on a PC. Square didn't make hi-res raw videos for Eidos to use (they didn't plan on porting originally I don't believe).
VIIIPC's videos weren't "great", but they were tons better than VIIPC's

Yeah I was talking more about FF7. FF8 FMV quality was miles better. I do actually have the advent children DVD so I might be able to use that. Ficedula's cetra patch, where can I find that, and will it patch onto a previously patched exe. I'm not sure which backup of the exe is unmodded.

You can download fidecula's cetra patch from his website in the ff7 section

I just tried the 32 bit mode in ficedula's patch. Puts a nice vertical black bar on the screen for all the FMVs.

The ff7 FMVS are worse for pc than psx
On other hand, FF8 FMV (the high quality ones as there are 2 kinds with pc ff8) are BETTER.
Hope that answers it :)
