So, according to some sources (http://www.rpgsite.net/news/378.html), Sony have found a way to make all PS3 models backwards compatible with the PS2 with a firmware update.
This Japanese article (http://gigazine.net/index.php?/news/comments/20090803_ps2_on_ps3/) might be more informative, but unfortunately I can't understand it. :-P

Yeah, the new Slim PS3 is supposed to be able to run PS2 games via software emulation.
Even though the Slim has yet to be officially confirmed by Sony.
-
Apparently there was an early listing for the PS3 slim on amazon's German site (http://image.blog.livedoor.jp/imasnews/imgs/f/7/f7cea387.jpg), but the page is no longer available.

I can confirm this.
And the PS3 is cheaper in japan now too, (299€ if i'm not mistaken)
Some GoW dude posted that on his twitter.

I wonder how long it will take for that price drop to come to the UK? :-D
And whether, when converting the currencies, Sony will round down the price drop to the nearest psychologically significant figure each time? :-P

The software emulation is not amazing. One of my fave games Tekken Tag PAL will not run proper speed with ps3 because of it and other games have some glitches.
They have known about this issue for over a year.
-
Is that with one of the old 60GB models? 'Cos the emulation might be better with the new firmware upgrade...

Yeah I have 60 GB model but also the latest firmware. None of the firmware over last year has corrected any problem with tekken or the glicthes I have....
I am hoping they get round to fixing this.

Previously Sony filed a Patent that would allow them to emulate the PS2's Emotion Engine on the PS3.
i must say, i find this strange.
filing a patent for emulating their own hardware (EE) on their own hardware (cell). maybe they are planning to thwart potential homebrew ps2 emulation attempts for ps3?

Maybe, although you have to ask whether they think it will do any good. I can't see the law getting in the way of people making emulators.

They abandoned using the ps2 hardware in ps3 because of costs if I am not mistaken. :?

If this happens, I'll buy the slim ps3. I'm hoping it happens sooner rather than later though.
-
This will make the PS3 quite an awesome console; it will be able to play the numbered FFs except 3 and all the numbered Metal Gear Solids as well.
We can only hope that a price drop in all regions will come soon too. If it does, the PS3 might have a very good Christmas.
BTW, according to gamesindustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/playstation-3-manufacturing-costs-drop-70-percent), their production costs are $240 per unit; if that's true, they'll be able to afford one.
-
A price drop, a slim version and backwards compatibility? I'm there. If it all comes true, the sales will skyrocket.
-
Those are the things I want to see before I buy one. Actually, I'm not too interested in the console's size, but the other ones are real deal-makers
