Title: Team Avalanche needs your help!
Post by: sl1982 on 2009-10-20 05:28:48
Hey guys, if you have been around this forum for any length of time you may know me as the project co-ordinator of Team Avalanche's Graphical overhaul. As you may have also noticed that our mod has expanded from its original intent. Going from a font upgrade to a full graphical overhaul is a massive undertaking to say the least. So I am putting out a casting call for all you lovers of the game. We need your help to do this. Us few members cannot possibly do it alone. So if anyone out there is willing to help there are many things to do. If you are a modeller, a texturer or a graphic artist we can use your skills. PM me if you are interested. But be aware there are guidelines that need to be followed.

1. We are attempting to keep as close to the original game as possible, this is a graphical update only.
2. There is a minimum standard that we will hold all work to. If we find that a submission is inadequate then you may be asked to tweak or redo the work. Or we may also make changes ourselves.
3. Anyone who submits work will be considered part of Team Avalanche and will be part of any discussions on graphical styles. But remember it is a democracy, if something is a majority you must accept it. We need no fighting amongst team members. (Head designers do carry veto power though :P)

So if this is something you are interested in joining we would love to have you. Lets put all our skills together to make ff7 the best it can possibly be!

Post by: secondadvent on 2009-10-20 09:52:27
no, they are not redoing the storyline, they are redoing the textures/models, to make the game LOOK better. so, they are not doing anything but that: they are not making enemies harder, they are not changing the dialogue, they are just changing the graphical appearance so that the game does not look as crappy anymore.

with all due respect, the story doesnt need changing. Secondly, this is a recruitment thread, not suggestions. If you do have suggestions for our project, feel free to make a thread for it.

Lemme know if you need any 2d help and I'll do the absolute best that I can.

Hope I can help a bit!

Excellent, what types of 2d? Textures, icons, etc?

Um, really anything that requires 2d textures or anything 2d, as long as I have a template (I.E. the original texture, or an icon)

I've never textured before, but I'll learn! I'll do my best! *Salutes*

Have a whack at this frog :P (i think mini cloud needs a onceover as well.)

edit (sl1982): This is the original texture for sizing purposes. Image needs to be resized 4x before using.

i too have thought of that, and it would definately be an interesting addition. Perhaps making a list of changes that run through an approval process, and finall get into SL's installer

If anyone has the script dumped into a format they would find it easy to place back into the game, I wouldn't mind reading the whole thing to check for grammatical errors.

Hey Guys,,,,

I can make superb 3d models......But i have no clue as how to texture them in ff7......

Any one care to teach me how to texture
Title: Re: Team Avalanche needs your help!
Post by: Timu Sumisu on 2009-11-30 17:36:59
texturing is an art that takes a very long time to get good at. for ff7, make a texture as you would any other, convert the image to .bmp and import into p creator with your model, set the thing to battle model, and give it a texture id, look all this up on the pcreator website. thats more or less it... play around and you'll figure it out.

I'd love to help I am very good at photoshop but from what I gather you guys are not using that program to redo the background files. I am no good at texturing or coding. I am however a very fast learner and would love to help.

That would be great guys, unfortunately I am out of town for a couple weeks so I cant find something for you to work on. The only thing I can think of at the moment is the icon for mini and frog for the battle square slots. They are the coloa.tex and colob.tex files in the menu_us.lgp. They would need to be resized to 1024x1024 and then converted to 24 bit. If you are able to find these yourselves then awesome, if not u will have to wait until i can get them and send them to you.

I found the file just fine but...I am sorry if this is off topic but how do you edit TEX files I think its using kimera but its not opening the file?

EDIT: Got It but the icons look like crap! They have almost no color?

Yeah, because the tex files are palleted you basically need a screenshot and replicate it using that as a reference. The actual tex file is just for sizing.

i'll check out the world map and see if i can find anything i haven't finished that you can take a stab at. The oceans need to be finished, but i'd like to be the one to do those.

I know that the lush jungles aren't finished yet, i'll post PNGs of the TEX files if you wanna give it a shot. I haven't been able to come up with anything i like yet, so maybe you can.

I'd love to take a stab at it I'm almost finished with the icon's you told me to do but I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I might change the way something looks right before its done...Question I noticed that most or all of the icons you told me to do were already done by other people on the forum and they look great why didn't you just use there's for the project.

Sure its coloa and colob I see you did most of the icon's already. I've made some decent looking materia...Well anyway you guys already have a nice looking set of materia so I don't want to screw it up with my newb materia. I'm just tweaking the ring icon now and the accessory icon.

The only icons left are the mini-cloud and the frog icon. The rest of them have been done.

here's one of the base jungle textures if you interested in remaking it.
I need it upsized by a factor of 8 so the final image needs to be 512x512.  If attempting this, please don't just resize it and run it through filters, i've already know how to do that.

good luck!

You dont really need to know anything about modding. If you are an artist we can use you. I can take care of the putting it into the game aspect.

Well, whats left o.o,

the summons and magic are done, there is sitll enemy spells i think, and a few odd 2d images, apart from that with the world map nearing completion, more of what needs work is the field backgrounds and 3d textures. So either if you have epic skill at making mat paintings, or you wanna try out texturing (i'd suggest the latter, texturing isnt that hard, and thers a lot of reference material to work from)

I am down for helping with this mod. Know my way around blender, PS, know the basics of sketch-up, etc.  I am a fast learner, so as long as there's enough project side documentation (seems to be quite a bit) or "tutoring" available for project specific techniques being used I can help with whatever in the gfx 2d-3d more-so modeling department.

Reading through much of the documentation now.

Is there something specific that you wish to work on? And to all the other project members do you have something you wish him to attempt? The only thing i can think of right now is they may want some help with sketchup on the backgrounds. I have not done much on the project lately so i may be out of the loop. When i get my new laptop I will probably get back into it more but this pile of crap I am using right now just frustrates me.

The main realms that need work are remaking 3d assets for battle and field, battle is a bit more intensive, as there are a wider variety of monsters and bosses. Field models I have a system in mind that will speed up the process a great deal, by making some general assets and reusing and mixing up parts to speed up the process (aka no need to make arms that are the same with different characters) so we can set up color and model shapes to choose from, then just do new textures where needed. The other giant area that needs work is remaking the prerendered backgrounds. Basically you take the original background into sketchup, get the basics of the scene worked out, then put it in blender, rematch up the scene (in blender, set the background image as needed, then when in camera view, that image is overlayed, making it easy to line up the scene). From there you model up all the details high rez, do some texture work and render at something huge :P Take your pick, let us know what you wanna do, and we'll let you know everything you need to get started.

Post by: pyrozen on 2010-01-25 20:18:35
one area that is also untouched in the underwater area on the world map. I currently have no plans to redo it myself, so anyone is welcome to take a shot at it. Just know that the bar for textures is somewhat high, so make sure it's quality work.
Title: Re: Team Avalanche needs your help!
Post by: FinalTide on 2010-01-25 22:24:59
Well I had already started working with sketchup and in blender remaking the md8brdg BG from flevel.lgp into 3d for rendering so I guess I'll keep on that for now. (because it seemed like everyone else was working on differing parts of the first mission).

Is there a standardized way we report what we're working on, progress/approval, or do we just post it in the forum to make sure no one else is working on the same thing? Or post in the forum for all the above for now?

A work in progress section of this subforum could be handy, each person contributing could have their own thread for showing off their work, without pushing down threads for releases and such.

Well we do have the good ol' WIP thread

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8831.1600

we haven't much been using it, as each project such as the world map retexturing ended up getting its own, but as it seems to be going, if there is a coherent project, a wip thread gets set up for it. (ex the thread for background replacement)

Hello all! After seeing what has been done, being far beyond what i'd have even thought could be done with keeping so much intact, I think it's time for me to pitch in. I have worked some with asm long ago(gotta love psx), and even further back, had some thorough experimentation with 3ds, C, java. I'm reading more into the newer esoteric tools, so hopefully I can get a crash course in before(my biggest problem to date) I can install the new motherboard in my tower, and gear the format to do some tweaking again. But the amount of work put into this passes from a tip of the hat to a great respect, and aside from the knowledge that modding of this form is obviously a giant cash cow , i'd like to show my support in this monumental effort to make a great game even better.  ;D

Edit: Sorry if this was a necro post. :(

quick question, since the newest driver supports direct PNG loading, will you be doing away with the modification of the LGP files? This would make installs much easier as well as reducing the overall filesize by a litle bit.
