i've been saying this about crapple for years!!!, there is a reason there logo is pnly peice of an apple, oh and by the way, R.I.P to my ipod f0 48 hours. :P
-
<--- Has never purchased an apple product in his life, and doesn't ever plan to.
Why do people even still buy iPods? Everything that conducts electric current can play mp3's nowadays.

i couldn't help it, just about everything that's black, shiny and has internet access turns me on...... ;D

you know, I was a long time Mac user, and I still love Apple products. I just want to know one thing... Why have I never had any of these issues that people always seem to have with Apple products?
The worst I've ever had happen to me, was my iPod Video died on me after 2 years of being thrown around and being mistreated. My brother still has his first gen iPod which stills sees regular use, works perfectly. Oh, the backlight on my iMac G4 also died after about 5 years, during which the computer was seized and horribly mistreated by the secret service (they did snap the Airport card in half...still works somehow, I dunno why)
Am I just extremely lucky in that EVERY apple product I buy works and stays working until long after it should've died? Or do I not hold a grudge against apple and so I don't treat my products like crap... except that iPod
-
i have run on mac for the last 5 years or so.... never had issues, an emac g4, n an intel core duo imac 24", fun stuff, still works like a charm, i'll read the whole article later :P

Some people are just lucky.
And all but the most unreliable products only break in the minority of cases; something with a fairly high failure rate will still work most of the time. There have been people with IBM Deskstars and Seagate
7200.11s that have never had any problems.
Finally, Apple tend to market their products as being far more reliable than anything else on the market. If one believed their advertising and the claims of the more zealous Macfags, all PCs are swarming with viruses, crash every couple of hours and need to be fixed by professionals every few weeks, whereas Macs never ever have any problems. Naturally, this means that people will make a big deal when it turns out that Apple products do malfunction sometimes, and Apple have no-one to blame for this than themselves and their community. If Apple didn't market their stuff the way they do, no-one would make such a fuss about the occasional exploding iPhone. :P

good point, that's why i got my psp 3000 a week after, we enjoy long walks on the beach and we coddle lovingly every night after having rough sex. :o

*shrug* I've always had to work WAYYY harder to upkeep a PC than a mac. Granted, I'm not the average dullard of a user, so I don't get viruses and stuff like so many people that I know do (in fact, its why two of my friends are now on Linux, I couldn't keep up with their needs for me to fix their computers, so I set them up with a stable environment prepped for all they need).
I dunno, I guess I'm just an apple fanboy at heart
-
I guess i was never that interested in mac computers because i heard that it was pretty difficult to customize them, since where i live it is more or less impossible to find any parts that work with mac, and one the main reasons i have a computer is so i may customize the hardware to my liking, that's just not possible around here with apple unless you travel 20 miles to the local apple agent and pay a heart-wrenching sum of money for a simple upgrade/repair.

This is why I don't tell my family that I'm good with computers (well, I'm good by "normal person" standards :P); I've heard so many horror stories about people who get designated as "tech support guy" for their social circle. ;D

Yeah you wouldnt believe how much of a pain it is when everyone knows you are good with computers. Calls all teh time, fixing shit all the time. It sucks
-
*shrug* I've always had to work WAYYY harder to upkeep a PC than a mac.
And I haven't. Oh look, anecdotal 'evidence'.
Anyway, I have the worst of both worlds. My parents demand advice from me, ignore it, then blame me for whatever happens next regardless.
-
Hi, I'm a PC and I haven't had any trouble with Viruses, Trojans, Malware, etc for over six years (see: learned about the ways of the internets).
Maybe this is why I find the Mac advertising scheme so sad.
-
I've never had a BSoD. Ever.
I've hardly ever had any virus problems either; there've been a couple of times when I've been taken off guard but was able to clear it up myself, and my first PC had some adware, but I've never had any of the problems you see in those mac ads. TrueNuff TV (http://www.macspoofed.com/performance.php) has some responses to those ads, which I'm sure most of us have seen already.
Mind you, I didn't get my own PC until 2003 (my family was backwards with technology), so perhaps I missed out on the joys of the worst days of Windows.
Anyway, I have the worst of both worlds. My parents demand advice from me, ignore it, then blame me for whatever happens next regardless.
I have the best of both worlds. :P
My dad has never used a computer, which is a blessing, but I have an auntie and uncle who are the classic example of a computer retarded family. Apparently, they spent £1200 on their last system (pre-built, of course), but AFAIK they don't do anything with it that they couldn't do with a netbook (srsly: they play very basic games like 3D Tetris, use email, write letters and shop online; nothing more). Naturally, their computers spend more time being repaired and having viruses removed than they do being used. I sometimes wonder whether it would be a good idea to ask them for their old computers when they get rid of them (they're the types to throw whole systems away), fix all of the problems (which are likely to be easy to fix; I think there's a good chance that the staff at the repair shop they go to see them as easy marks and rip them off) and either use them myself or sell them.
I once used their computer and googled something; autocomplete showed me that they (probably my uncle) had been searching for terms such as "naked people". If it weren't for the fact that they obviously had no idea what they were doing, I'd have sworn they were trolling me; who the hell looks for porn by googling "naked people"? Well, it probably explains why their computers get so many viruses...
Does anyone else have fun stories about technologically retarded friends and family? ;D

SHAME!
my business uses Windows XP, but after windows 7 SP1 comes out they may update to 7 (waiting on their program to get official support)
I hadly have BSoD many times.. But all because i was overlocking and needed to up my nb voltage or cpu voltage ;p
Never have BSoD without Overclocking though.
Anyway here's my story of my mother. Her computer had a virus causing it to act funny. instead of taking it to me, She threw it out her window (literally) and bought a new one. Best i got.
Other then maybe my cousin asking me what Windows was and if she has it and the Windows XP bootscreen :P

Well, I suppose that if it weren't for people like that, a lot of computer companies would be out of business.
It seems that my family is relatively mild...

Ahah thats hilarious. The only problem is you have to explain to the person why the more ram he downloaded isnt speeding up his computer.

Here ya go! (http://gpu.sourceforge.net/download.php) ;)
I've found some people who may or may not actually believe you can download RAM. Guess what kind of computers they use (http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=37013). :D
-
Un..believable, it's actually illegal to download RAM?, i just downloaded 4gigs from that site you gave me and my new GPU works friggin amazing, never before have i ran Trojan horses with such ease and stability
PS:
I'm gonna update all the computers in school now.

Glad to be of service! ;D
I wonder whether there's a place where one can download more storage space...

Forget just storage space! download the whole damn thing! http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2tzjvase :-D (Please don't actually download..No idea where this comes from)

Love it! I just sent that URL to multiple people. Lets see how many believe it.

i'm trying to refrain from sending it to some people i know, trust me, they WILL go around boasting about their downloaded ram and the the "wonderful person" who sent it to them, i' m serious, lives could be ruined here :P

No offence intended, of course ;D
And do the people you fear will boast about their new RAM have any fun stories of the kind hellbringer616 was telling earlier in the thread? :P
-
Well another of the wierdos i hang out with claims to love his computer a lot, so the instant it started slowing down, he began deleting lots of stuff, of course he deleted some important stuff for school accidentally( i mean really important he came the next day crying that his mother wishes she aborted him) and even after all of that, it was still moving slow as hell, the real suprise came when i mentioned the word DE-FRAG-MENT and there was nothing but ackward silence after that.(meaning i had to give a detailed explanation on how to defragment and what an ass he was for deleting the crap out of a 250 gb SATA hard drive that was only using 80 gigs)....... see what i have to deal with everyday!! :-P..i mean his computer's hardware kicks ass compared to mine, 2gb ram, nvidia 8600 gt GPU and you wanna tell me about slow performance!! and guess who had to help him redo everything he lost, and by redo i mean do most of it for him. :x Of course, now his computer works fine and annoyingly, he calls me every time there is a problem. oh, and did i mention his AMD x2 dual core processor....utter madness. Now i'm scared i'll have to explain yet again that RAM is not your Freakin hard drive and i doubt this one will understand either,(he didn't know what most of his hardware was called or even what it looked like until i opened it up and showed him, hell, i doubt he even knows now.)
-
Is there any way in which you can take financial advantage of this situation? ;D
I've heard rumours that some people believe that deleting files on the hard drive will magically make a computer faster, but I never thought that people actually believed it.
Maybe you could start charging him for making his computer faster (PROTIP: install avast! and MSE and do a full virus scan with both of them). :D
-
ah yes viruses, every time i borrow a flash drive from the guy avast keeps telling me what a huge risk i'm taking just by holding the thing, he and his family of course were thinking about pirate ships when i said i was installing avast and not surprisingly, he had 90+ trojans( not an exaggeration) after i scanned it which i beleive came from the porn sites he frequently visited and neglected to remove from history, i mean, how the hell can a parent not know their child is a pervert when the first thing you see when typing a website is Redtube.com. Oh and as for charging him, i can't, he's getting a new pc soon and guess who's getting his old parts, his"best friend" of course.
-
he's getting a new pc soon and guess who's getting his old parts, his"best friend" of course.
Does that mean you? Are you getting rid of that old computer he doesn't need any more? Because that would be very kind of you :D
If that is the deal, I suppose it's comparable to getting paid. :P
-
He's giving me the old pc because i'm such a "good friend" who never says anything bad about him "especially not on the internet" and who selflessly services his computer for free, which to me is better than money since i drool over his video card and processor. :-D
-

I wonder how long it will be before your PC is faster than his? (seeing as he's bound to get lots of viruses again). ;D

Not very long my friend.....not very long at all, on a positve note, all my helping with pc related stuff in school and what not has got me recommended for an adult I.T course even though i'm two years underage, so all the annoyances has it's benefits i suppose. :-D

I just remembered one of my favorites. I was giving tech support over the phone and said, "Now, go to 'My Computer'"... He was really confused... (If you don't get it, use your imagination)

Compared to a lot of people, you actually have quite a good deal there. I say that should stay with him and milk him for all he's worth :D

I'm often tempted to consider doing tech support as a part time job, then I remember all the stories I've heard from people who had the same idea before me. ;D
-
KM, I worked tech support before. I didn't do the phones, though. I had the fun job of actually physically repairing broken computers; swapping out parts...checking mobos for blown capacitors (apparently a very frequent problem with old dell midsize desktops), adding RAM, reformatting HDDs/installing software. It was a pretty sweet job for $14 an hour. Kinda wish I didn't move away from DC but I couldn't afford to keep studying at George Washington University.
I remember I would pretty much demolish my workload halfway through the day, so I'd have hours on end to myself. It's too bad I didn't start seriously working on FFVII until after I quit.

Yeah, that sounds like it would make a pretty nice part-time job

I'm very sad to have missed the excitement; a few hours before it happened, I used LeechBlock to stop myself going on 4chan. :'(
-
I got there right as they were "ruining lives" but after quiptext was closed down
-
I often wonder how badly people's lives really are affected when they are "ruined" by 4chan. Most of the time, I'm sure the people who are targeted must be able to get on with things after a while, but when anonymous finds actual incriminating evidence and passes it on to the right people, there must be serious consequences that we don't have the pleasure of seeing. Given all the sexual content being discovered, I'm sure that a few people must have been caught cheating or something like that; there's a chance that some marriages may have fallen apart.
It would be great (in a morbid and voyeuristic way) if there were a way of checking up on the people whose lives were supposedly ruined to see what actually became of anonymous' attempts to destroy them.

It's so nasty. But so entertaining. The shocking-ness of encyclopedia drammatica too has me laughing guiltily and hoping no one really knows I find it entertaining.

Chances are that a lot of your friends enjoy sites like that as well.
Perhaps the most worrying things about the *chans and related sites such as ED is that they show us once again that humans can be much crueller than most people would like to believe, albeit when there is some separation between the person doing the tormenting and the victim. Incidentally, this is why Hermoor is so entertaining.
-
Incidentally, this is why Hermoor is so entertaining.
... Because we only see his acts of social suicide and not the little boy crying behind the computer screen?
-
Incidentally, this is why Hermoor is so entertaining.
... Because we only see his acts of social suicide and not the little boy crying behind the computer screen?
That, and the fact that everyone is joining in. One of the sayings about anons on the Internet, "none of us are as cruel as all of us", despite being motivated by Internet tough-guy BS, is actually quite true. People are much more likely to be nasty to someone when they're part of a group.
Also, I think that Hermoor is probably screaming at his computer screen rather than crying behind it. He's a special case in that he actually does deserve what he gets because he acts the same way and because he was the one who escalated the war of words every time. Unlike us, he also doesn't have the peer-pressure excuse either. Any cruelty (well, attempts at cruelty) and hatred you see from him reflect how he really feels; no-one is egging him on and no-one else is tacitly approving of his behaviour by acting in the same way. He really is that much of an arse.
-
Well hey, we need people like him around. Otherwise, who would we exercise our cruelty on?
Maybe, one day, he'll get to experience life from our position.
*Maybe.*
And I believe the group cruelty thing is called discrimination. It may or may not serve a purpose, but as soon as it has got momentum, it has also got inertia. It takes one person to start something, but then it takes everyone involved to end it, even after it has gone too far.
Don't worry, though. I don't believe we've gone too far with Hermoor yet ;)

There's a site called suregottold.com (http://suregottold.com/t/xPFgoQX7KI5oL_Xi7GUpF5UnT1TQ7Vap-QkFI8_orrY), devoted to spreading news of Apple getting told. 4chan's /g/ board can also be helpful in finding funny tech-related news.

-
IT JUST WERKS
Indeed. ;D
That's "just" as in "only just, as long as you hold it the right way".
Seriously though, Steve Jobs is a great innovator and has redefined the way we think of mobile phones. Before he came along, a phone was something you used to make phone calls. Today, phones are used for sharing your nudes with 4chan, buying $1000 apps and getting your house raided by the police. Thanks to Jobs' revolutionary thinking, phones are no longer devices used to make phone calls, so having good reception is completely unnecessary. Pfft, people who think that phones have to be capable of making and receiving phone calls are standing in the way of progress. thank you Steve, for redefining phones to such an extent that your phone is no longer functional as a phone and is just an iPad nano. :P

It is a nice little myth that has been going donkey's years. Macs have their purpose and they have their advantages, but when it comes to games and all the attention they get from developers, professional or otherwise, I am glad I have windows, despite its faults.
Fanboys are a plague.

I disagree with this - at least if we're talking about 'forum etiquette' rather than 'the rules of Qhimm.com'. I'd rather see necroposting than duplicate threads. And as this is a technical forum, where research can take several years, and vital data can be *so* easily lost, bringing data together into easily-found, consistently titled threads is absolutely *vital*.

Oh, but hadn't you heard? Unix machines are magically immune to malware. No unix server has ever gone down (apart from when they, uh, have), user permissions can't be escalated by glitches, and things like buffer overflows and format string attacks magically resolve themselves when your OS treats everything as a file.
IT JUST WERKS!

I'm becoming increasingly convinced my boss models himself on Steve Jobs. He's a massive Apple fan, a horrific micro-manager and wears these godawful black turtlenecks.
Now, I admit, I've been regularly convincing him to implement vendor lock-in and restrictions on functionality all under the aegis of 'usability', which makes me something of a hypocrite. Then again, our customer is a c***, and has had it coming for a long time.

My distaste for Apple isn't so much for the products, it's more for the idiots that use them because they're shiny, I think I posted about it here before but I told a guy that only used Apple stuff because it's what all the cool kids do, to kill himself because he didn't know the first thing about well, pretty much anything really.
I know a few guys that prefer OSX since that what they used in school or for video editing but I know far more who can't actually explain why.

That, and the company's business practices/advertising are the reason for 90% of Apple hate. Mind you, the products are becoming more rageworthy over time, too.

Do you mind saying why? If it's the pricing, you have no reason to single them out. For the price of certain other pieces of professional-grade software, such as Maya, Avid and Wolfram Mathematica, you cam buy the whole CS5 Master Collection.
If it's Flash, then you have a partial argument. However, rather than hating Adobe, your energy would be better spent telling the FOSStards at Firefox, Chrome and Opera to allow users to use their h.264 codecs; at the moment, there's no viable alternative to Flash.
The only really rageworthy thing they do is try to sneak a trial copy of McAfee in with their downloads. Cunts.
EDIT: wow, the forum censors mild swear words but doesn't censor that?

I don't hate Apple products. I think these are great. BTW, do you know why this is not an entire apple? The creator was gay and, because he had enough, he suicided by eating an apple with poison in it. This is how it came.

That... that doesn't even make sense.
Anyway, my attitude to Apple, the iMaxiPad, Facebook and the like is spurred by two things:
1. Their fans are smug gits, myopic enough to believe non-users couldn't possibly have legitimate reasons for choosing alternatives / electing not to participate
2. Fear of a 'walled garden' internet, where what are basic tasks in the modern world (sharing information over the net) are subject to an Apple tax. Where a single company determines the data we can and cannot access. Where political pressure groups and interested parties might, through influencing / threatening this single company, seal off portions of the internet as they so choose. A world where goal-focused apps, that simply parse our end desires, rob us of the ability to research, explore, and play in the internet. A world where AOL was never slain, where open source users are f*cked, and where providers have leverage on any data we own.
Point 1 is still important, though.

A few reasons. First, their software is massively bloated, often for stupid reasons (they can't use system-native GUI tools for example, they make their own instead). Secondly, the price (specifically of Flash). It used to be affordable for home users, but literally as soon as Adobe bought Macromedia, they raised the price just because they could, before they even had a new version out with any added features. It was a dick move, and a slap in the face of consumers. It just so happens that there was a huge drop in things like flash games and cartoons on newgrounds about when this happened, and that was certainly no coincidence. They're basically charging a "you have no other choice" premium, and that genuinely pisses me off.
And then there's their insistence on pushing pdf as a web format. NO IT FUCKING ISN'T, IT WAS DESIGNED FOR PRINTING, IT SUCKS FOR EVERYTHING ELSE. Adobe Reader, in spite of having very little it needs to do, manages to be far more bloated and resource sucking than most of their high-end creation software, nag for updates for every language in the world on a near-daily basis, and really has no business being used anyway.
I think as a whole, my problem with Adobe is their attitude. They spit in the face of consumers, but since they control a number of industry standards, everybody else has no option but to take it.

Yes, but you forget one thing: Apple really hates them. And that means Adobe's on our side.

It would be great if Iran hated North Korea. They'd stop giving each other money and sharing technology.
In the (near impossible) event that they had a full scale war with each other, we could just watch and laugh.

Dang it kudi! It was a metaphor! You totally took the wind out of my sails... :/

LOL
EDIT2:
$250 for an unnoticeable increase in clock speed. Even by Apple's standards, this is retarded. Or maybe not, since people will actually pay it.
