Title: Difficulty installing ff7
Post by: Chaosmonkey on 2010-05-13 06:54:45
here is the deal, i used to have ultima edition. then i bought the legit version so i could mod and update to v1.2 ect.
so i took the the ISO files off the disc.

now i use a virtual drive to run it, problem is when i try to install it and i get into the installation screen (with midgar city in the BG)

and i press install, nothing happens, nothing, nothnig at all, it just close's the screen and i go back to desktop
i have heard this is due to the xp patch, but to install the xp patch i require to install ff7 and i cant install it without the xp patch!

im new to virtual drives and such, my PC specs are:

Windows XP
1gb ram
Duo 1.89 intel core
Geforce 6600 (i think)

so if anyone can help me out that would be great, i really wana get cloud in high def version!

btw if im being nooby by not finding a post similar to this its because im new.

Albus, try reading a little more clearly before bringing the rulebook where it's not needed.

No idea man.  Update all of your drivers then restart your computer and try again.  If it still doesn't work, buy a new computer

just put the cd in your cd drive and install it, don't worry about using the isos yet. first get the game working.

i have had this problem before (not with winXP but with vista) and i found 2 ways around it,
the easiest method is to boot into safe mode and install from there, but if that doesn't work i will go into the second method.

All I can think about is your install cd is damaged or tampered.

I think it's looking for the discs in the same drive the game was installed from, this is pretty common in games and I can't remember if FF7 does it. If so, there's probably a registry entry that can be changed to fix it. Too tired to try and look for it...

Disclaimer, don't screw with your registry if you don't know what you're doing. Yada yada bla bla bla I'm going to bed now.

edit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII
Find the key labeled "DataDrive" and change it from your actual CD drive letter to whatever your mounted virtual drive's letter is.

If the video's are not playing then there are a few methods but the best method is to use Aali's Custom driver which can be gotten here
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8306.0
(some people will recommend using something called TrueMotion codec, but i don't recommend this since Aali's Custom Driver eliminates the need for it)
just download the file, extract it to your FF7 folder then run FF7Config and select "Custom Driver" of the graphics screen then run the game and the videos should play, if they don't you could try copying the video's off all 3 Cd's to your harddrive (guides can be found on how to do this if you search the forum) to see if that helps.

My guess is that it's still trying to play the videos from the original disc. In the "MoviePath" entry in the same place in the registry, change the drive letter to your virtual drive. Shoulda mentioned that before, was WAY too tired to think of it.
