Gamefaqs is your friend. Apparently, speaking to Yuffie and choosing "NEW START" will let you restart the game (presumably with all your stats and equipment). Speaking to Cid in the top room and choosing "opening (-s-)" might work as well.

I still haven't had any luck. I've been using a party of Cloud, Tifa and Aeris, and none of the have had MHPs at level 99 outside of either T Fergusson's or your program's ranges, or have even come close; Cloud, for example, has got an MHP between 9200 and 9450 every time. I'll try a few more times tonight.

Has anyone else been playing with it?

This is quite odd. Half an hour ago I filled 0x01f8 to 0x0203 with 0s and my characters didn't gain anything in stats at level up (but their HP and MP gains were normal).

Maybe that's what Hojo was really testing on Vincent: anti-ageing cream! He didn't look a day older when he came out of the coffin than he did when he went in (or maybe this was explained in DoC; I didn't pay much attention). Or perhaps people don't age normally in FF games ;-)

He's 57 and she's 16 :-o Hmm, what's the age of consent in the FF7 world?

And what is Cloud about to do?  :-P

Heh, you might enjoy videos like this, if you haven't seen any of them already.

Well, I didn't expect that to happen  :?

I can't think of anything else that would stop characters getting stat increases other than stopping them from getting level up, and that's would, of course stop them from getting HP and make them do less damage, so that won't work.

*furrows brow*

So, does anyone else have any ideas?

Hmmm...that is confusing. Well, it's a long shot, but have you tried replacing all the values from 0x021c to 0x046b with 0s?

I think that if you put 0 for every value from 0x01f8 to 0x0203 you will eliminate stat increases, if the wiki is right. It seems that all the bases and gradients and curves are really determining is from which of those 12 bytes' value will be the stat increase; if they are all set to 0, then the stat increase will always be zero, if they are all 10 then the stat increase will always be 10. But I'll have to check this.

It's less than two hours until 2009 here!

General Discussion / Re: Favourite FF game in the series?
« on: 2008-12-31 12:12:47 »
There's a *big* difference between sound quality and music quality; IMO a midi of a great song (for example, Terra's theme from FF6) sounds far better than a fully orchestrated version of a good one. I've just started playing Chrono Trigger for the first time (it's fast becoming one of my favourite games) and I'm amazed by what was done with such simple technology; although it is less advanced it sounds better than any of the more recent FF games and is more immersive for it.

Better technology can only increase the potential quality of a game's soundtrack and it seems to me that this potential is being realised far less often. As long as the technology is above a certain threshold, the actual quality is nearly always determined almost only by the quality of the composition.

General Discussion / Re: Recording Videos of FFVII
« on: 2008-12-30 19:13:20 »
Don't bother with Fraps. I use camstudio with xvid compression when I make videos for youtube; it's freeware and the video quality is excellent.

3561
Do you still have them? And how far did you get?

Hmmm, you could probably base Scarlet's model and animations on those of Elena, or maybe Pollensalta. Palmer seems like the obvious choice for a base for Heidegger's model and animations.

3562
I'd like to see a Tseng battle model; he could make for a decent boss fight. Since Tseng uses a gun, his model could be a same as the Turk Vincent model except for the head. And as long as we are putting forward random ideas, how about Scarlet and Heidegger battle models too; I'd like to fight them. Of course, talking about this is much easier than making it happen.

Quite a few of those ideas for alternative outfits seem reasonable (maybe some of the things here will interest you).

It is odd that characters in RPGs wear the same cloths all the way through the game  :| hopefully they are like me and characters from the Simpsons and have many sets of identical clothes, but I fear that Cloud actually wore the same suit for almost the entire game. Smelly.

Perhaps you could also have Cloud in his Shinra MP uniform, and Aeris in her Crisis Core outfit. The former should be much easier since there are already battle models with those clothes.

BTW, shirtless "smexy" (ahem!) Sephiroth should be fairly easy, at least in battle. Surely one should be able  to replace his normal battle model with his final battle model, as has been done with Cloud? My only fear is that rainy, foggy Nibelheim might be too cold for even him ;-)

I checked into the pc version cutting down the native resolutions and found that it doesn't. I was playing the psx and pc side by side(via alt+tab) with psx emulator playing the game at 1240x1024 and the background qualities were exactly the same.

I've just tried this with epsxe and the same thing happened: the PC version and the PSX version looked identical. Damn. The backgrounds looked a lot better on my TV and the colours were stronger as well. And let's not forget that low resolution images will always be much more noticeable on a monitor/laptop screen 50cm away than they are on a TV two metres away ;-)

Those photoshopped backgrounds are brilliant! How long did they take to make? Do you think that you could do all of them and make a patch?

Yeah, the backgrounds on the PC version do seem to be very bad, and it would be nice to have higher res versions of them.

If you want to know more about the backgrounds in the PSX version, this might be a good place to start, but it seems that ripping backgrounds from the PSX version will be pretty difficult. In fact, because of the way they are stored, I'd be impressed if you were even able to view them.

OK, I think that I understand what's going on now, and I see why damage is a signed value, but why current and max HP and MP? The bytes for enemy HP and MP aren't signed AFAIK, so what is different about the way player character HP and MP values are stored?

About you Zack project: have you heard of the Zack patch, which is now back online? Perhaps if you ask Scorpicus she might let you use it as the basis for any Zack mod that you might make. I actually don't think you'd have to edit that much dialogue to make a good Zack patch; obviously the stuff about Cloud's past will have to change and the relationship with Aeris will be different, but Zack already has a reason to fight the Shinra and hate Sephiroth and one could change the story to make Hojo's experiments on him have gone differently in order to explain why Sephiroth has such control over him.

The bytes determining HP and MHP are signed. What does this mean :?,  I don't really know, but I do know that it allows negative values and that it stops them going above 32 767, so that's the limit and that's why you aren't having any success :-(

Grunt Red XIII? That shouldn't be too hard to do on the field, but there are no battle models for him, so you'll have to make those yourself or hope that someone else is willing to make some. i gather that it takes quite a bit of time to make good battle models.

Putting Crisis Core music in the game shouldn't be hard at all; FF7 music can substitue any mp3s you want for the tracks that play in the game. You could make Aqua's "Barbie Girl" play during the Safer Sephiroth fight if you wanted to do so. If you edit the field files, you should be able to customise the music even further. See this thread for some information on my fumbling attempts in this area.

If you have nine party members at the end of the game, I can't see why you couldn't have three parties of three fighting Bizarro; it should just be a matter of field editing with meteor.

Making new playable characters might be harder. Replacing playable characters with others is fairly straightforward if a little time-consuming, but actually adding ones sounds like quite a task. Someone else will certainly know far more than me about this, as my expertise is mainly in the kernel.bin and scene.bin files rather than the more complex things involved in doing this. So, does anyone who (unlike me) knows whereof s/he speaks have any ideas on the feasibility of this?

I'm lost for words after reading that last post. NooB, you seem to have misunderstood what this mod does; please, please, please read at least the first post in a thread before posting in it. If you had done you might have seen this:

Q: What this patch does?
A: It gets rid of 9999 Limit in your FF7 game so your Damage, HP and MP (why not?  :-P) can go over 9999 now.

So wait until you level up, equip some HP+ materia or use a very powerful attack and see what happens...

It's impossible to go back there; one can get the "laser" enemy skill from Dark Dragons in the Northern Crater in disc 3 (tip: use manipulate).
