if you crashed there, like i did with the PC version, then you might also encounter problems at these common crash spots: Cosmo Canyon 1st visit with Bugenhagen, Gold Saucer Gondola sequence with Tifa, Junon prison escape sequence with Weapon approaching from the west, and there were a couple others I can't remember off the top of my head. The Barrett flashback sequence is the first major crash so just get prepared for these other ones (assuming your copy has the flaws mine did)

instead of making a new thread i might as well add another question here... i can't get back into the Underwater Reactor cause the front door is locked, this is way after the first time you go on the Huge Materia missions. the only two items i am lacking are Leviathan Scales and of course Steal As Well materia that goes along with that in Wutai. i am pretty pissed off, after 30hrs or so of playing this game through a second time, i missed such an easy item! how does that happen! anyways, there's no chance of getting back in there to get the item is there? i really want this master support materia :(

yep, that's the best combo for the Weapons also. i actually like to equip it on two characters just in case Emerald's lasers sap all the MP away on one character. you really can't die with that combo.

yeah with most Final Fantasy games i have to make that decision - do i want to get immersed in the story and follow it through like i would a normal game, or do i try to amass every item and ability and get mega-stats and go all out... usually if the RPG is good enough i'll play twice, or even three times, with the following runs focusing on all the secret items and sidequests etc. with today's RPGs especially, considering how exponentially larger they are than their predecessors, you really need to choose your time wisely. that's why i'll always love the classics like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF3, Zelda series, even old Phantasy Star, cause there's only so much extra you can do in addition to the main quest. FF7 and FFX in particular really have that ability to sidetrack you for days ;)

i can't remember how long it took to beat it the first time, as my memory from my college days is a bit hazy :erm: however i recently beat it again without doing the majority of the side quests (ancient forest, weapons, chocobos, master materias, limit breaks etc.) and i'd have to say it was around 19 hours. if you don't do the mindless levelling up of your characters and just follow the storyline it actually goes by pretty quickly. i can't think of one boss integral to the storyline that required me to run around and level up before beating it. if you go with the flow, the game is designed to allow you to beat it with minimal effort. the second time through i had really hoped to be challenged more, but that wasn't the case. now, i am using my save game after i have completed all the storyline up to chasing Sephiroth in the North Cave, so my new challenges are the weapons ;)

i returned to Great Glacier towards the end of the game to pick up a few items i had skipped over previously. but now i can't get out of the damn area. every time i run up the mountain paths to the east of the tree where you originally land, i don't get back to the village, just keep getting redirected to either the red X at the base of the cliff, or down towards the cave where you get Alexander. i could have sworn to return to the village you climbed this mountain. when i try to climb Gaea's Cliff, that mountain guy comes out and says "Look we can't climb the cliff! Give it up!" or something like that and I am forced to turn back. how the hell do i get out of here??

General Discussion / FF IX for pc
« on: 2004-12-10 00:31:00 »
slightly related - how good is FF9 compared to the others? i always wanted to play this since it came out awhile ago, cause it seemed like it had that original FF NES element but updated with fantastic graphics. how is the gameplay - is it like FF8? that's pretty much the only FF i did not like. also was FF9 ever released stateside, cause I've never seen it over here in any form.

i might try this emu to give it a shot, it would be like a dream come true playing this game.

remember to use Carob Nuts when breeding (if you want River, Mountain and eventually Black chocobos) and Sylkis Greens when feeding (gives boosts to all 3 areas - intelligence, speed & stamina). the Greens are expensive but worth it. the Carob Nuts can be found at Wonder Square, or by stealing from that red dragon character named Vlad-something-or-other on any of the northern islands below the Bone Village. good luck.

yeah, i meant when on the world map, can i save after sending one of the choco's back to the stable. so the main thing is just to bring all 4 in at once, mate both on the spot, and kablam, nature takes its course! :)

i actually beat the game weeks ago, but decided to go to my last save game before i entered Sephiroth's cave and go back and do everything i hadn't accomplished before the end fight. i've never seen the KOTR summon, so that's going to be bad ass. i also am still missing Mime, HP Absorb and the Master materias, but am close to getting the Masters.

i think i'm going to cry once there's nothing else to do in the game :(

one other question, can i save inbetween getting these choco's or do i have to do the entire process in one sweep?

damn, i was hoping that wasn't the answer, but thanks for that cause i would have been trying this one breed forever. i guess the best bet then is to get the 2 goods + 2 greats and save outside the ranch. will try that now.

every time i try to breed for a Blue Chocobo, i get a female. this also happened when i was breeding for Green Chocobos. i have tried this in a variety of ways - releasing the old chocobos and replacing them with new ones, mating new chocobos with old ones, and so on. it seems that after you mate a pair once, they won't produce that color again, just yellow. so i have gotten in the habit of replacing the old chocobos first and bringing in new ones, mating them on the spot, still each time it gives me a blue female. if anyone else has experienced this let me know. i even restart the game and restore my game right outside the chocobo ranch and go through the breeding process again and again, hoping the computer will just replace 'female' with 'male' but no luck even doing that ten times in a row. do i simply have to bring more chocobos inside, maybe try mating twice at a time and see if i get a male? well i guess i'll go try that now, but if anyone else has any tips that would rock.

sweet. so what do you get at the end of that? what are the bosses like? so far nothing has given me any problem in the battle arena, though that red raptor lookin fellow with something like 30,000 hit points takes awhile to bludgeon into submission.

that's hilarious that you're in berserk AND mini... :D man, you need to equip a Ribbon before you head in Battle Arena. and what is the special round - is that where all the handicaps are Materia based? that's the only one that defeated me...

thanks for the tips. I just obtained Omnislash from the Battle Arena (do you get this limit normally either way? cause i just spent a long ass time raising the battle points to get it...)

my plan is to have one character equipped only with Gravity and HP Plus materia, while Cloud does his thing with Omnislash. so far i've been beaten each time but i'm also not super built up yet - around level 65 or so.

as for the Gold Chocobo, do i have to go through the entire process of catching, raising and breeding chocobos to produce one, or can you only get one after beating the Weapons and giving the items to the guy in Kalm?

General Discussion / what's up with Vincent/Lucretia?
« on: 2004-10-27 08:27:50 »
i actually learned the truth about Hojo being Sephiroth's father after completing the return to Midgar segment. so that was somewhat of a premature post ;) but thanks everyone for the insight, you could write a book with all this stuff.

1) i was doing some reading on tips to beat Emerald Weapon and it mentioned using Knights of the Round in conjunction with Mime and W-Summon (and equipping a Gravity Materia for 9,999 damage each attack). call me an idiot, but i have no clue about either KOTR, W-Summon or Mime. i haven't encountered them in my journey so far and i think i am pretty far into the game - about to jump into the North Cave to go after Sephiroth, right after I killed Hojo and prevented the Sister Ray from being fired. did I miss these Materias along the way, or do i still have further to go before i find them? isn't the main storyline almost over? i hate that feeling of missing a bunch of stuff that i can't go back to :( (like the limit breaks for Aeris - i exchanged the Mithril AFTER she died, of course... d'oh!!)

2) how the hell did anyone find out to morph the Ghost Ship in the Underwater Reactor area to get the Guide Book that you give to the gentleman in Kalm?? i really would have never had any clue about this unless i read these tip pages. is there some clue i passed along the way that would hint about getting this item? i know after I beat Emerald and Ruby Weapons i get the other pieces that this gentleman wants, so at least i'm on the right track but man, i'm still amazed someone figured that out :D

3) i defeated the original Weapon above the Cosmo Canyon area and finally have gained access to that weird jungle area. i'm not looking for a spoiler, but could someone prod me in the right direction in this area? i already got Vincent's weapon from the carnivorous plant, but i can't seem to get further than this.

you know what's great about this game? i thought i had beaten it years ago when it first came out on PS, but now, going back through it on the PC, i realized how much i missed the first time and surprisingly i DIDN'T beat the entire game. so from here on out, everything is new to me. this game still stuns me with its depth and playability.

anyways thanks for any responses!

General Discussion / what's up with Vincent/Lucretia?
« on: 2004-10-26 03:41:08 »
ok so i randomly came across that pool with the waterfall via the submarine you get after collecting the Huge Materia - and saw that little sequence when Vincent finds Lucretia again. so let me get this right - Hojo or Gast or whoever used Lucretia as a "specimen" to give birth to Sephiroth? but she said she has Jenova cells in her - so was she created as a specimen, or did she get the cells later on in order to give birth to Sephiroth? also, why did Gast/Hojo even want to create Sephiroth in the first place? i think i missed that bit of info.. can't remember any part in the game before this where that's explained. and lastly... what the hell is the point of this little sequence?? Lucretia just disappears after it, when Vincent tells her Sephiroth is dead... I don't get it. there doesn't seem to be any relevance to this point. any input would be appreciated.

hey zimky,

could you possibly re-upload the Execution crash fix? (or PM me for my emai?) just ran into it myself. i thought that the gondola crash would have been the last. this one better be, cause i've hit all the major ones so far and it's getting really annoying... (chocobo, gondola, cosmo canyon, corel prison, and now execution).

what i'm doing (and this is probably a good idea for those of you who haven't done this), is creating a folder with all of my saved games near these crash points - both the pre-crash saves and the after-crash fixes. will come in handy for future replays, though of course some stat tweaks will need to be done the next time around.

General Discussion / FF7PC - Corel Prison crash
« on: 2004-08-26 07:37:34 »
i thought about this also... but strange that none of the previous flashbacks have resulted in a crash... i doubt the programming is all that different throughout these scenes. but i'll try your suggestion, thanks.

specs are pretty low , dont make fun of me...

AMD Athlon 900mhz
1gig ram
ATI RADEON 8500 AGP
SoundBlaster SB Live!  (i think it's the Platinum version though it's displayed as Value in my device manager... not entirely sure there)
Samsung SM-352B SCSI DVD/CDRW

pretty sure everything is flashed/updated to latest drivers all around. i'm also on Windows XP Pro, at DirectX 9.0b. i haven't updated to Service Pack 2. that's about all the specs i can think of that are important.

oh also, it's been years since i played this so i barely remember these movies and storyline movements... can someone also describe what Barret says/sees in his flashback, and what happens immediately afterwards? do you get to leave the house and continue on, or are you whisked away somewhere else?
