Fortunately you don't need to unpack the files, you can edit the ISO directly. :)

Thanks. I'll keep this updated on my progress with the program.

Also, I'm interested: How did you find the character values? As for me, I used a letter frequency table, and with a little trial and error, found the correct sequence from A-Z.

Awesome! Thanks for the detailed reply. How far did you get with your program? Did you ever read anything from the ISO/whatever? If so, I'd love if you could share the code. :)

I'm using Qt and C++, but it would still be helpful.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if there's an easier way to read lines from the binary ISO file without having to specify a hex offset for every line of dialog... so far I've got nothing.

Good news everyone! I'm almost done with my text table. Got sentences, just need punctuation. :) Could anyone tell me what they use in FF7 and 8 for putting the character's names in dialogs? In FF9 it's ?A?. The first and 3rd characters I do not know yet, but would like to know them.

I was under the impression it was already in English...

lemme check....

Yup, still in English.

Is there something wrong with the current translation?
I didn't say I wanted to translate it to English. The problem is, is that it's not in Basque. ;)

Also, it appears on a Brazilian site they have translated FF9 into Portuguese, so it shouldn't be too hard, right? :-X

My first task is to locate the font file and create a text table. So far I'm stuck.

Hey guys. I've been scouring the internet, and currently it seems impossible to translate Final Fantasy IX. One can view most of the other files with Noesis, but no work has been done on editing dialog and other in-game text. I want to change that. I am still a novice programmer, and an even worse reverse engineer, and I am well aware it could take weeks or months to get anywhere (keeping in mind I'm a fast learner and have more free time than I want :P ).

FF9 is one of my favorite games of all time (my second favorite FF game, after 8 ), and since I love programming and hacking, and always have, I thought, why not put my determination to good use?

I don't know if anyone is currently working on anything FF9-related, but if you are, speak up! :)

And if anyone would like to recommend anything for me to read about text tables, pointers, and other such hacking-related items related to the PSX and more specifically FF9 where possible, feel free!

So it works for ps version as well! I'm glad to see that! huh! :D
Sadly no, I'm using the PC version. :)

It's dark when the text is found in scripts. So when it's the light grey, the text can be unused.
OK, I figured it was something like that. SO there are cases where it's light grey and it appears in the game, or are you just unsure?

Cool! I got it to compile. :)

I have a question about your program: When i click the down arrow for dialogs that have more than one window, nothing happens. is this intentional?

Also, what's the difference between the light grey and dark grey next to "Text##" in the dialog tree?

Awesome! I'm very glad to see another program in Basque, even if it's of a very specific use. :) Is it easy to compile the .ts myself? I can't really figure out how to... There shouldn't be a lot of errors, but in case there are, it would be nice to be able to compile it myself.

If you could make a text/dialog editor, that would be amazing! I might translate FF9 into Basque. :)

Hey! I've translated your program into Basque, and would love if you could add it. :) I tried to build the project myself using Qt, but couldn't figure it out... so I'll send you the file.

It's on my SkyDrive:

Hello everyone! I have started work on translating my favorite game of all time into my favorite language of all time (those would be Final Fantasy VIII and Basque if you aren't keeping track). :D I just started today, so I'm probably only 1% done (if that), but I plan to complete it. I am very determined to.

Most of you have probably never even heard of Basque, so I'll explain it a bit.

It's a language spoken in northern Spain and southern France by about 1 million people. Although it has few speakers, it has great vitality and has TV shows, music, movies, and books in it. But sadly, no video games! Almost every Basque speaker speaks Spanish too (or French in France, but only about 50,000 or so of that one million are in France), and since there are so few speakers, no one to this point has cared to translate a game into it. Basque has a pretty big internet presence, with programs like Firefox and uTorrent available in it, as well as Facebook, YouTube, and Google Translate. It is a language isolate, meaning it is unrelated to any living language (or dead, as far as we can tell).

I am an American, and not related to the Basques by ancestry, but fell in love with their language and culture several years ago. Now I speak it quite well, and am interested in translating games into it, since learning languages and gaming have been two of my hobbies for a long time.

Here are a couple screenshots of what I have done so far.

If there are any Basque gamers out there, I would love to get some help with translating and/or proofreading!

I wrote this in English to make it more accessible, and I wasn't sure if you're allowed to use other languages on the forum. If it's allowed, I'll write something in Basque so that Basque speakers could find this more easily. :)

Agur! Bye!

Thanks! I saw that, but was unsure what it was, so I never checked it out. My translation is underway. :) I'll make a thread here and post as I progress.

Thanks! I didn't see that before.

So, it doesn't seem it is possible to edit the text files yet, am I correct?

EDIT: I'm stupid, I'm sure this is for the PC version only? I was trying to edit the PSX ISO. :P

General Discussion / Final Fantasy VIII fan translation?
« on: 2013-01-12 05:03:08 »
I was wondering, how hard is it to translate a PSX game into a different language? I know it's relatively easy to translate SNES games into other languages, but I haven't seen it done with a PSX game. I would love to translate my favorite game of all time (FF8) into my favorite language (Basque) for others to play, but from what I can tell, that wouldn't be so easy. Is it possible to do at all?

Thanks!
