7th Heaven / Frozen on "start" menu after mods successfully configured

Been trying to install the 7th heaven mods on and off for about a year (don't ask)...finally got the game converter working for my steam version of FF7, loaded the mods successfully in 7th heaven - click start game and i hear the beep to signal the game is modded.... the Eidos and squaresoft logo videos play, the start menu appears....and the cursor is frozen. Any ideas guys? I'm not a modding pro, but this is killing me!

i had started the game previously (unmodded) - would that matter?
