I assume this is going to be for PC. If you do it real time, you need to think of controls. Not everyone is going to have access to a gsme pad of some type, so the controls will have to be reasonable. I would personally like a system wherein you can see the enemies on the normal screen, like they did in XII, but with a more action-fighter control ability (as in Tekken or Mortal Combat or something) rather than the menu based control.

Also, how will you implement things like materia, items, and limit breaks? I have an idea I posted for the materia system here http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=7872.0

But anyway, my suggestion for battle would be this:

Pretend you're using a basic PS controller. X, Triangle, Square, O, L1, L2, R1, R2. You set L1, L2, R1, and R2 as skill buttons. You assign spells/summons/enemyskills/commands to one or a combination of those buttons. Then during battle you press the button and woosh. The only problem with this is that it would limit you to only like 15 possible actions, but if you follow my materia idea that should be reasonable.

The main buttons, X, Triangle, Square, and O would be used as basic actions. X could be attack, Square could be defend, O could be Item, Triangle could be jump or something like that.

Items would be fairly simple. Whenever you press O the battle would pause and you could select which item you wish to use. That would "arm" it. Then you press O again to use it.

Now, the only problem with this is as I said earlier, finding reasonable controls that would work for a keyboard. Or I suppose you could just make a gamepad mandatory.

Sorry if this is confusing, I wrote it down as I thought it, so I've probably forgotten something.

Anyway, that's my suggestion.

How would you implement the battle system?

At first I thought this was serious, and I was like "wha...?"

Then I saw the linky.

This is pure, unadulterated genius.

Seriously. GENIUS.

The independant Materia would be simple. It just does exactly what it says. HP Plus increases your HP. Speed Plus increases your Dexterity. Long Range allows you to attack from the back row, etc... (the necessary AP values would probably have to be increased dramatically, to prevent super uberness and whatnot)

Support Materia would be slightly more difficult. I'm thinking that when you used a spell a new box would come up asking what supports you wanted with that spell. For example.

Magic:

     Ice
     Bolt

And you pick a spell. Then another menu pops up.

Supports:

     All
     HP Absorb
     Added-Cut

And you select whatever supports you want to be used. The problem with this idea is that it will really slow the game down. Idea number two is to have a Support set-up section in the main menu or maybe under the Magic or Materia sections, where you can pre-set which supports go with which spells, and those settings are the ones that will be used in battle.

But... since this is appearantly not possible until Q-Gears comes out... *sigh*

Troubleshooting / Look! An idea!!

I've been wanting this for a while now, but my knowledge of computers is very limited, so by the time I figured out how to do this myself, I'd be dead. So I shall ask one of you peoples.

Would it be at all possible to change around the materia system? I've always wanted it to be more traditional, though I do like the idea of materia. So I came up with this idea.

Instead of having the materia learn the skill or spell or whatever, have the individual person learn it, along with the materias bonuses and penalties of course. For example, you put a Fire materia on Red, and lo and behold! a couple thousand AP later he can cast Fire without having the materia equipped, though the stat changes are permanent. I personally think that this system falls more in line with how the FF series has flowed in the past, and will also improve both the storyline (it would make the characters much more individualized, while still leaving them very customizeable), and gameplay (not everyone can do everything, and sources and other stat increasing items and equipment become more of a necissity rather than a bonus).

Like I said, I don't even know if this is possible or not, and if it is I am sure it would require a lot of work, but I would appreciate anyone who is willing to give it a shot. I am more than willing to render any help possible, but, again as I said, I'm not too great with computers.

Contain is multi-elemental as well. And that's why I need the patch, so the Elemental will work with multiple elements from the same materia.

Neither Contain nor Kujata work with Elemental. Could somebody please make a patch or something that would rectify this situation. Thank-you in advance.

Not that I'm aware of. US version.

Edit: Well, it has been a very long time, so I shall assume no one really wants to do this. Ta Ta...

Thanks. I appreciate it. Anything is good.
Also, i have a quick question; I installed a number of the patches that are on this site (from the Neat Compilation of Patches for FF7 thread) and it has made the game... twitchy. Sometimes it will run normally, but others it will take an unnecessairly long time to go to the next area, or enter a battle. Particularly in the world map. I think that it is the patch that slows down the mini-games and battle swirl to normal speed for the faster computers. But I don't really know enough to be sure. Could anyone help. I could use it. :? Thanks again.

I'm really not good with programing or computers in general (I had to get help just to get on this thingy), but would it be possible for anyone with either a lot of boredom or free time to make a strange program for me. It involves the FF7 battle system. I don't particularly mind the ATB system, but I really despise the materia system. It makes the game WAY too easy. I have been thinking, and I think that I have come up with a much more useful and strategic way to implement materia and magic in general. Instead of having the materia learn the skill and then it is allowed to travel between whoever wants it, the person that has the materia equipped learns it, similar to the old system of learning magic and abilities from items and whatnot, but with materia. The stat changes that the materia gives would be acquired too, to help prevent overkill. I personally think that that would be much more interesting and challenging than the way it is now. Of course the Support Materia would have to be worked out. Possibly by manually selecting which spells/abilities to modify with which Support skill. Also, instead of having everyones stat max be 255, change the max around to fit the way they should be. Barret with high strength and vitality, but low magic and speed; Yuffie with high speed and luck, but low vitality; etc...
I think this will help limit the interchangeability of every single character. As it is now, battle-wise the only difference between characters is their weapons and Limit Breaks, the stats can easily be modified through sources, and everyone can do everything since there is no type of limit on materia. I like the story of FF7 and how individual the characters are, and I would like that to carry over to the battle as well.
Like I said, I know nothing of programming or anything of the like, so I don't know how difficult this would be or if it would even be possible, so let me know. Thanks in advance for whatever happens.
