Okay, use_shaders = no fixed it. I KNEW it was something with my brain XD
There was something about the shaders for nvidia cards in the release notes and I totally forgot about it. What a waste of time  :x
Thanks for the tip.

Hi, I just tried Aali's custom driver ff7_opengl-0.7.11b
Doesn't seem to work too well for me. Its propably just something with my brain  :P
I installed it over a virgin v1.02 german of FF7 just to be sure. I don't intend to use any custom textures or models, so the mod_path setting is set to none in the ff7_opengl.cfg.
Nonetheless it seems that the driver won't load the original textures, since 90% of the game is a shade of grey and the app.log says things like this
INFO: tried to load d:\spiele\ff7\/mods/none/cr/opback_b_00.png, failed
I don't know whats going on.
Here are the following files packed into a rar file
app.log cfg.log dxdiag-output ff7_opengl.cfg
https://rapidshare.com/files/1633977421/config_and_logs.rar
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/7721/ff7world.jpg
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/6071/ff7battle.jpg
Note that as soon as I entered the battle on that second picture, 'something' crashed and a crash.dmp of 50mb was written to disk which I also uploaded in case it is of interest.
https://rapidshare.com/files/438587196/crash.rar
I say 'something' crashed because the battle/game just continued to run as if nothing happened...  :o
Then theres another big one... all of the movies display just as plain snow white. Nothing else to see just white.

Hope somebody can give me a tip on these please pretty please  :(

Alchemy sucks big time. There are many games that either won't be able to use that fake EAX at all or just crash with EAX enabled.
No more Creative Labs for me. And certainly no more Vista. Had it, loved it, hated it, formatted it. There are too many reasons for me
not to keep it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Square Soft, Inc.
on XP, although mine key is empty because I uninstalled FF7, so I don't know if this is the right key.
Also try a search for "eidos"

No, i'm from austria. I think home will cost about € 100 or so...
Ich würde aber schauen, daß du ausgereifte Treiber für deine Hardware bekommst, bevor du dir Vista kaufst. Da mangelt es nämlich nach wie vor dran.

Oh boy, this is a solution? This is more like killing the patient to cure the illness.  :-P

7
Are you talking about "your mum's piece of crap" or are you talking about your Geforce 8800 rig?
If so, what forceware version are you using?

8
Getting the game to run on XP is no problem anymore (or did you have vista in mind?) and the corruptions we are talking about here will not be gone if you boot the same machine into Win98 (are there any drivers for the 8800 for Win9x systems anyway?). So this wouldn't do any good.
However, I thought about buying a Voodoo1 Addon card for PCI slots on ebay. Since my TFT has DVI and Vga connectors, I'd need no loop cable and this should work at the side of my main video card that has only DVI. But this is no elegant solution at all, because it is additional hardware, it blocks one pci slot (I only have two of those precious old things), not everyone has a monitor that has two input connectors and there will not be an endless supply of old PCI accelerators.

I doubt that any virtual PC available supports 3D acceleration.

I have contacted NVidia customer care about this issue on 04/21/2007. After some talk, the last answer I got yesterday was:

Hello Benjamin,
We'll have to research this and keep you posted if we find anything.

Best regards,
David
I also pointed out what borde said, that it could be a vertex shader issue. Maybe they'll fix this with a future forceware version if the 8xxx GPU is not the problem.

I'd just like to point out a little detail: textures seem ok, the problen is with the un-textured (vertex colored) parts. Certainly it's a shame that new cards no longer support this game. Well, looks like we defintly will need Q-Gears in the future :-P
Okay, the original textbox backgrounds are just some messy gradients, could be very well just untextured vertex shaded colors (as well as the status bars, which are broken too). But what about ftp://diego.is-a-chef.com/ff7/ff7%202007-03-30%2021-53-09-75.jpg this shot? Or this one? ftp://diego.is-a-chef.com/ff7/!ff7_corrupt_textures.jpg (Look at the shuriken in the box)
Why would the textbox all of a sudden get a texture if it is supposed to have none, just because of hardware incompability?  :? On such a case I'd rather expect the colors to be wrong, just like on the field characters.

Using Forceware v158.19 now, textures still corrupt.
Losing hopes here.. . I definately will NOT get my old Pentium1 from the attic to just run this one game.

It has.

Note that this is the exe of the english tnt fix (v1.02), the original 1.0 doesn't have this entry.

Troubleshooting / Re: Black Textures Problem

Hello folks. I have the same specs as Christian and are suffering from the exact same problem. I too did some screenshots of this cuz I posted this in another forum already.

I have a problem with our beloved game that I have not yet read about in this forum nor anywhere else. All of the ingame textures seem to be corrupted. This really seems to be a hardware incompability problem, not driver dependant (however I cannot downgrade to older Forceware due to a Geforce8800 lurking in my PC).
You can find some screenshots of my problem here:
ftp://diego.is-a-chef.com/ff7
Especially take a look at "!ff7_corrupt_textures.jpg" in the commands dialog box. The background looks like a shuriken, colorized to the default textbox background colors. Now what? God damnit, why isn't there a TNT emulation option in the forceware driver?   :x

As you can see, the battle FX like magic, puffs etc are looking fine, and the game runs in 3D-Hardware mode @ 1280x1024. On some screenies you can see, that the playfield characters do seem to be colorized, not black, but waaaaaaaaay to dark. If this could somehow be solved, the textbox corruptions wouldn't bugger me at all.
Software mode works, but well... you know the drill, it just looks UGLY.
I also tried to replace d3d8.dll with XP SP1 and win2000 versions, but this doesn't have any effect (no wonder, this file is not shown in the references of ff7.exe when viewed with dependency walker of visual studio).
Enabling 8-bit textures with rivatuner has no effect as well, PLUS the 8-bit texture test in the ff7 setup still fails.  :? Maybe rivatuner 2.0 is incompatible to forceware v97.92
I think it could be a hardware problem, since using a dx2OGL wrapper produces the same corruptions.
