General Discussion / Re: Favourite FF game in the series?

Nah, isn't that the purpose of forums, to ramble on incessantly about things?

I don't think I disagree with you on any point (except I really didn't find Terra annoying, only Gau), mostly because I never thought about any of those things you said.  Now that I look at it, there is a lot of similarity between the characters in the 2 games.

I'm running XP Pro, I tried compatibility mode, but it still crashes to desktop.  Google hasn't been much help as almost everything is just the usual internet retards.  I did bookmark the one forum I found that seemed like it could be at least a little helpful (oddly enough, the same forum where the guy told someone to delete their system 32 folder).  If I still can't get it to work after trying some other stuff, I may just try installing it on my crappy laptop and see if it's playable on there.

And yes, I do mean MGS 1.

That's right, I'm breaking out the old school...

My favorite is FF6.  I liked the development of Locke and company, the story was frakking awesome, and pairing the Genji Glove with the Offering on Sabin was just freaking sick!  8 attacks that dealt 9999 was well worth the effort of getting all that stuff.  Sadly, I didn't get a chance to finish it (I was playing it on an emulator when my old computer had a stroke).

General Discussion / Metal Gear Solid help?
« on: 2008-06-16 07:28:56 »
Sorry if this is in the wrong place (quite possibly in the wrong forums, please don't smite me), but I have run myself ragged trying to find this anywhere else.

I've recently installed Metal Gear Solid on my new PC (AMD Athlon 64 x2 running at 2.21 GHz w/ 4 GB RAM, and Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT 256 Mb GPUs (SLI enabled)).  When I tried to start the game the first time, it gave me a message that it didn't recognize my video hardware (You think?!) and it switched to software mode.  Software mode isn't faring any better, the resolution switches, it shows the splash screen for MGS, and promptly crashes to desktop.

So, if any of you exalted geniuses have any advice or know where I can look for advice (because one of the few forums I found that offered any "advice" was a guy saying "Delete your System 32 folder."  Needless to say, I am at least bright enough that I didn't fall for that sheiskampf's trick.

Anyway, if this is in the wrong place, I'm sorry, but I don't know where else to turn, it seems someone has set all the retarded lab monkeys free on the rest of the internet and this is practically the only place I can come and not want to beat myself to death with a brick after reading just one post.

Thanks guys,

Marasmus

You know, I don't think I actually had any trouble with the Materia Keeper.  No, the enemies that really chapped my arse were the imps in FF8 and the Master Tonberries in 7, I don't like it when a stupid monster casts Holy on me as it dies and the stupid Tonberries always seem to kill somebody with "Everybody's Grudge" just before they get there with the knife and really ruin your day.

General Discussion / Re: FF7 Annoyances
« on: 2007-06-14 00:18:32 »
Yeah, the chocobo breeding's really annoying the hell out of me also.  The really annoying part is that I can't seem to get the game to spawn another Vlakrodos so I can get some more Carob Nuts, so I'm more or less stuck right now.

By the way, does anybody remember the exact PSX version controller setup as in "Ok=X, Cancel=circle," etc.?  I've just gotten a gamepad (I was using a JOYSTICK of all things before since the keyboard controls really confused me) and I was wondering so I could set up my gamepad the right way.

7
Nevermind, I think I just solved the problem by enabling a couple of textures in the Direct 3D tweaks in Rivatuner.  Thanks for the help anyway.

One of my friends said that he'd had a similar problem that he fixed by installing the AC3 audio codec (it was only certain DivX files that were giving him trouble).  I tried that and it still hasn't worked.  I'm getting a bit frustrated now.  I may try something drastic and backup my savegames from FF7 before uninstalling it and the codecs to see if that does it.  Like I said, it's quite frustrating.

9
I can't seem to find the settings for it.  I know that I've installed TrueMotion, but now I can't find it or its settings anywhere.  I'm really confused.

10
After I installed the Ace Mega Codec (since I couldn't find TrueMotion anywhere else), I can't get some videos to play right.  I'm not sure what file types they are, but I know for sure that the DivX files I have don't work right.  I have sound and a "partial" picture.  It's mostly black and I can kind of see a little bit of dark red where things are moving, but that's all.

Someone is one sadistic S.O.B. to make those levels.

I wish to begin by saying that this is certainly not a situation I would ever wish to be in.  However, if I were faced with this situation or one similar to it in which one of my loved ones were lying in a hospital bed with a machine breathing for them with no hope of improvement, I would pull the plug.  Also, if I were ever the one lying in that bed in a persistent vegetative state or in a state of constant, irrelievable pain like this little boy, I'd want someone to pull the plug.  The real shocker here is that for all intents and purposes, I am considered ultra-right wing (Reformed Presbyterian) with the possible exception of my views on situations such as this.  My thoughts in this sort of situation are a bit more pragmatic and utilitarian than most other Christians.

1)  The child is in pain.  Keeping him on the respirator so that he remains alive only prolongs that pain.  It is our duty as good and moral people to avoid inflicting undue pain on others.  Now, one of 2 things happen in this situation, depending on your worldview:  A)  If there is no God and no afterlife, then when the child dies he simply ceases to exist, thus ending his pain and anything else that he feels.  B) (My particular worldview)  If the child was baptized into the Covenant (because his parents "vouched" for him, it's sort of complicated to explain it), then his soul is given a heavenly body with the rest of the saints.  On the other hand, if he is not the child of believers, then we get into a grey area (there is much debate within the church about whether young children who have not had the opportunity for salvation are bound for heaven or hell, there is simply little evidence in the Bible for either one).

2)  There are others who need that bed worse.  I realize that it sounds cruel, but let's assume for a minute that this hospital is filled to capacity.  Somebody else can't get that bed until he dies or gets better (which in the case of an incurable degenerative disease that has progressed that far, it's not going to happen).  If there is someone whose life can be saved if they get that bed within the next 24 hours, then the plug should be pulled immediately.

3)  As for why a good God would allow these sorts of things to happen, my only answer is that God knows His plan and I don't.  That is the simplest way I can put it, and I'll admit that it sounds like a total cop out.  I suppose that is where faith comes in, even though that is also a cliche, Sunday school answer.

Well, I found the problem as soon as I opened the Configurator:  I forgot to set it to render through the sound card instead of through the old on-board card that I disabled.  As soon as I did that, it worked fine.  Thanks!

Troubleshooting / Crash to Desktop before even starting
« on: 2007-04-26 03:26:23 »
I've been playing FF7 for the last 2 weeks.  Tonight, when I tried to start the game, the screen goes black to change resolutions and immediately goes back to desktop.  My current setup is a Pentium Celeron 3GHz processor with 1 GB RAM, GeForce 5500 256 MB GPU, and (freshly installed) Soundblaster Audigy 24-bit sound card w/ Windows XP Home SP2.  I think maybe that the Soundblaster drivers could be the problem, but damned if I know how to fix it.

I can't seem to find the stupid switch that Yuffie's talking about to get my materia back.  Am I just an idiot or blind? Here's a screenshot just in case I'm a blind moron:

Okay, so where can I get them?

Sprites?!  Which Final Fantasy are you talking about?  :-D

Okay, sorry.  I had a brain fart from looking at too many sprite comics (8-Bit Theater).  I meant models.  Is there any way I can put the new, improved models into my FF7 directories and get it to work without it turning into a complete SNAFU? (since though I'm not quite computer illiterate, I am a bit ignorant when it comes to doing much more than dragging and dropping stuff into directories).

Is there any way to put those into my game so I don't have to look at the crappy old sprites?  I'm all for old games that have good plots, but that doesn't mean that I like Stone Age graphics.  If it's not some complex, "I'd have to learn how to program" sort of a method for putting those into the game, then I'd like to (if you all are willing).  Otherwise, don't worry about it.

Okay, TrueMotion 2.0 worked, thanks for the help guys!

21
Squeeble's suggestion worked, at least now I won't be destroying the computer.  No offense, but you really haven't gotten me closer to solving the problem, though I am grateful for the way out that doesn't involve lobotomizing my computer.

Is there a patch or something I've missed?  I saw the note that the XP patch was crap.  I had that installed before I came here, but I uninstalled it and used the 1.02 patch from Eidos.  I've tried using RivaTuner and changing the settings in the Configuration utility that came with the game, but I'm still only getting the same black screen.

22
Yeah, I didn't figure that the constant restarting was good for the computer.  Will that work if there's only one account on the computer?

23
System specs:  2.93 GHz Celeron, 1 GB Corsair RAM, 80 GB HDD, GeForce FX 5500 256 MB PCI , running Windows XP Home

When I try to start the game, the entire screen blacks out normally like it does when starting any other game.  However, it plays the Eidos logo music (I guess, I can't see anything), but the screen stays black, I can't Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Alt-Del, Esc, or anything else.  The only thing I can do is just hold the power button until the machine turns off.

I had already tried patching it with the 1.02 patch, I fiddled with the software and hardware render modes, etc., all to no avail.

If this is covered in the FAQ, sorry, I guess I just didn't make it that far.

Thanks in advance.
