I'm not mad, just explaining that when I replied, I was on topic in a sense, and I bumped your topic.  Which I am also doing now.  You should thank me  :-D

Besides, these forums are pretty close to dead, I might as well talk about enemy attacks in this topic instead of creating a whole new one for it and probably getting no responses.

Troubleshooting / Re: Installation of FFVII PC on a Mac?
« on: 2008-05-21 05:48:57 »
You would probably have to run it in a virtual machine. Something like this. http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/ You'd still need a legal copy of windows.
I am in know way suggesting this will work properly, I've never used vmware. I know on a PC, MS Virtual PC 2007 will run FFVVII great on a virtual Windows XP install - XG midi and all (Software mode).

Also, on most new macs you can dual boot to some version of windows if you have a legal copy of windows. I'd try this.

If you've got an old power PC your trying this on, you can *try* bochs http://bochs.sourceforge.net/ but in my experience it's only really usefull to help develop boot loaders and OSs. You'd probably not want to try this unless you are very familiar with PCs and how they work.

I wouldn't go out and buy any of this stuff just to try it, as quite often you will run into strange and sometimes insurmountable problems running 3d apps in virtual instances.

It is unlikely you'd be able to make a windows app run native in Mac OS, especially a D3D App. I won't say it's impossible, but i don't think it will happen.

Good luck!

Thanks for the helpful response!  She's trying to use a program called Crossover, which apparently allows you to use Windows apps.  Any advice on that?

Can you discuss this elsewhere please?

I just want codes for enemy techniques, nothing more.

First of all, its on topic, the topic is titled "Using Enemy Spells".

Second, these forums are pretty stagnant if you haven't noticed, if anything, you should be thanking me for the bump and drawing further interest to your thread.  Its entirely possible your topic could have gone a week without a response.

I always wish they would have given you Aero3 as an enemy skill (well actually, would've rather had an official wind magic materia).  Its one thing they didn't do too well in FFVII, providing enough forms of magic for certain types.  Holy gets gimped as well, only having a summon.

Troubleshooting / Installation of FFVII PC on a Mac?
« on: 2008-05-10 22:28:51 »
I did a quick search with no luck... is there an easy way to install FFVII onto a Mac?  I have a friend who's trying to figure it out and we're both stumped, and as she's the one with the mac, I can't really test things out easily...

I wonder if you replaced the moogle WITH the cat?  Probably the cat just has an invisible skeleton that makes it float, but maybe?

Dziugo, I love you for Gypt, but I think you should edit those threads to include this fix in them in case that is the root of the problem.  It may kill the need for Gypt but its for a good cause!  :-D

OMG, JUST FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!!!

"Hi, first post here  grin, ok, i was having the exact same problem and i had k-lite codec pack installed, maybe you are on a similar situation

the game apparently has some incompatibility with the avi splitter, a filter that comes with some codec packs. you can either uninstall it or disable it, in k-lite codec pack this can be done by acessing the Codec Tweak tool that comes together, under "disable filter" tab find Avi Splitter (Gabest) and check it, there you go, hope this helps "

From poster megarushing in a thread in Tech Support.  Someone PLEASE ADD THIS TO ONE OF THE FAQ's, as it seems many people have this problem.  THIS WILL ALSO SOLVE THE COSMO CANYON AND DATE SCENE BUGS.

Archive / Re: black screen in FFVII please help
« on: 2008-04-14 17:06:01 »
Yeah the black screen problem seems to be pretty common.  Its basically your game refusing to synch up any scene where 3D models interact with FMV, which is what happens with the train at the beginning.

If you have this problem, the menu trick will work, but you are pretty much guaranteed to freeze up at the Cosmo Canyon Observatory and the Gondola Date, so make sure to look up the Gypt program and use that to get past those parts.

If you want to choose between the sword on his back or no sword, all you'd need is 2 separate char.lgp's, one with and one without, and have them labeled.  Hopefully they can do that in the next release.

I mean I know its a hassle to compile 2 separate char.lgp's for such a minor issue, but since you'll be looking at that avatar 90% of the time ingame, its worth it I'd say.

11
does anyone really know what causes these problems to begin with? i haven't reached cosmo canyon or the chocobo race yet but so far my game hasn't had any problems and i really hope i don't have any problems there when i reach it

Scouring these forums the best I could surmise is its mostly got to do with codecs and OS's.  XP users posted with a lot of trouble up to a couple of years ago but they seem to have gotten by adjusting codecs, but more recently it seems Vista users are popping up with problems and obviously as the game gets older and people frequent forums like these less and less, help is harder to find.

If you're running XP you can probably find a fix IF you run into any problems by searching the forums, however Vista seems to have no option but to skip these movies for now at least (that or the problem is more specific and we just don't know it yet).

I think the music is part of the problem for the Mideel one, its very annoying.  I changed the music with FFmusic though so its a lot easier to go through (used one of the Crisis Core tunes, I tried to fill in any parts of the game referencing Zack or Cloud's memories with Crisis Core music).

13
idk much about vista...just use it when im fixing problems on it for ppl, lol but does it have a compatitbility mode like xp does? that might help...

Yeah, but I've tried that, and it doesn't do a thing.  I've copied the movies over to my hard drive and that doesn't improve things, and I've noticed many other people have had these problems as well.  I'm extremely thankful Gypt came up with a simple enough solution to skip these scenes, but I'm wondering if its possible to analyze exactly what the problem is and allow it to run properly?

Obviously its an 11 year-old game so you can't expect much, but it would be nice... at this point I'd prefer a true fix to all video problems over any new mods for the game.

Also to reiterate exactly my problems (which I've seen others on this forum have shared by searching through old posts), its essentially that the 3D characters and the FMV's will not synch up at all.

After the opening movie, when you should see them jump off the train, my screen turns black and I have to enter and exit the menu to see anything.

Any other sequence that combines the 3D models with FMV (such as Sector 7 tower falling, going up the elevator in Junon, taking the tram to Gold Saucer) has the same problems, I often have to enter and exit the menu after the FMV plays to see the screen, and the 3D model does not move with the FMV.

And then of course, the Cosmo Canyon and Gondola Date scenes are completely impassable.

My brother says he has no problem either and he also runs XP, I have Vista unfortunately.  If its a Vista problem hopefully there is a true fix, besides just "skip that scene" is what I'm getting at.  There has to be something thats causing the problem.

Basically the main issue is the game won't read fmv scenes that combine with gameplay.

15
I really do enjoy the parts of the game that need to be skipped (Cosmo Canyon Observatory, Date Scene).  Is there any chance the problems will ever be pinpointed and fixed?

Do we already know what causes it (your computers OS, where the movies are read from, something else)?  And if so, is there any hope of a solution that will ever allow us to actually play through these parts?

This was early techno demo for Sygraph. Later it transformed into battle module in FFVII. At the time of this demo they just experiment with gameplay and graphics to find better solution.

The reason why models was superdeformed? I think there two reasons. First one is legacy. All previous games has superdeformed sprites, so no one can say for sure that japanese market will accept this much changes in franchise. The second one is platform/production restriction. Although it's possible to add texture to model and done model that looks like real we must remember that at times when production begins - 1994, very little was known about PSX capabilities, it was better not to take that much risk at once... And hi-poly battle model not use any lighting, when low poly field models use 3 lighting source. And KAWAI opcode allow you to do a lot of other lighting things with models.

Thanks Akari, some interesting information there.  I had no idea production on FFVII had already begun in '94, that explains a lot.  Also did not know anything about lighting sources for the models, I'm inexperienced when it comes to 3D modeling.

Also a question for those who have been making models for the game or working on the Restoration Project, about how long on average does it take to make a model for one that does not have a battle model to base it off already?  And if the answer is "varies", what are some best and worst case scenarios?

I ask because if its something like a couple hours... then I think Square was either just lazy or chose to leave the models deformed for nostalgia.  But if its longer, then I guess I'd understand the decision.

While I agree it could get repetitive, personally I really enjoy the little details about Clouds childhood.  It really paints a picture of who he really was.  And honestly, I think a lot of us can identify with him... who hasn't ignored the "cool" kids at some point because he thought they were full of themselves and wound up excluded from social interaction?  I know I've done it before.

Also the song that plays during the mountain scene when they fall off the bridge only appears at that point in the game, and is honestly one of my favorite songs in the whole soundtrack... its very touching.

My only real complaint about the Lifestream sequence is the dialogue, which you can tell suffers from a lackluster translation... if a bit more effort had been put in it could be more enjoyable.  Of course if they were ever to do a remake, this could be a really cool part of the game, lots of emotion with the VA's and all.

WIP / Re: Cloud Replacement Model

But I can release the Buster Sword, I'll just upload the files ready to be spliced, someone else can make a patcher if they really want to, but it's only a few files, I wouldn't spend the time to make one.

Any idea when the Buster Sword will be uploaded?  I'd love to download it, don't need a patcher to install it.

Thats true, I forgot about the whole Nintendo/Sony thing.  If you look on Youtube you can find an old 3D preview of FFVI using the N64's graphics... or it may have been using the Nintendo/Sony machine they were planning to make.  I'm really not sure.

20
You misunderstood my question, it was about why they didn't use more realistic 3D models for the original game, not the PC version.  Obviously they weren't going to redo the game with better models for the PC, they just ported it with crappy midis.

Its more about why they didn't just make it prettier for the Playstation.

21
Another question then... it seems all the NPC RP does is replace the field models with battle models, and using slightly better looking elongated versions for the characters that don't have a battle model.  If its that simple, why didn't Square do this for FF7?  Is there more to it that I'm missing?  Were they just being lazy?  Or did they actually WANT the characters to look deformed (or cute I guess)?

22
I noticed using the NPC RP models, the game runs exactly the same for me... this is probably due to a powerful PC, but I have to ask, would it have been possible for Square to have used more realistic 3D models like these back then?  Or was the Playstation incapable of handling it?

how do u actually pull him out of the game I'm a noob and just started so i don't no how so can u tell me how ??? :?

I think you'd need a 3D editing program to do that.  And even if you did, it wouldn't matter as KH Cloud does not = Apzfreak's Cloud.  Of course if you liked KH Cloud then you could use that I suppose, but I'm not sure if the KH model would translate to work in FF7 as is or if it would need to be altered.
