Heya,

I currently play FF7 in software mode (and FF8 in hardware mode) but, I'm getting a Geforce FX5900 soon and was wondering:

If I follow the steps listed in this article, will I get the best possible quality out of FF7 (or FF8 for that matter) ?

You can use detonator 43.45~45.33 on your fx5900.  For FX series, new drivers like 5x.xx or 6x.xx are not compatible with PC version, so you have to use old drivers.

detonator 45.23:

Did you do the paste and cut thing...with Rivatuner in the FF7FAQ on this forum? The paste and cut thing....don't use 2x2 or 4x....the new options begin with FF...and they are only selectable thru the Rivatuner's AA section. One of the three is supposed to work.

I use a 5900XT card...so it's a bit harder to get working than the G3 and 4's.....but I managed to get it looking okay.

BTW: I don't know if it's just me...but the second picture didn't load.

For gf3 or gf4ti, 2x2 AA works well on ff7 and ff8.

For fx series, 2x2 AA works well on ff7, but it will cause grid lines on ff8. :)

I use Geforce 3 Ti200, so I should just go back to using Software Rendering?

Nvidia's driver supports 8-bit paletted textures, so you should be able to pass all tests in ff7config1.02 without checking "NVIDIA", then you can set d3d hardware acceleration.

I downloaded the 1.2 patch, and change it to Direct3d and enable Nvidia and TNT.. and I click the icon to start Final Fantasy 7 and it crashes before it loads the EIDOS words... any solutions??

If you use Nvidia's graphic cards with new driver installed, you should not check "nvidia" in ff7config1.02, because Nvidia's new driver already supports 8-bit paletted textures.

Besides, original FF7.exe should work well with Nvidia's cards.

The result changes if you apply different patch. :P

For FX series, "2x1" and "FF0d" will work on FF8, but it depends on the patch. If you apply another patch, "2x1" may work well.  :roll:

When you play the PS version on a Playstation, the MDEC files will show ugly scanlines. Therefore, on a TV screen, the AVI files of PC version will look better than the MDEC files of PS version.

However, when you play the PS version on emulator, the result will change.  :roll:

Is it possible to modify textures of worldmap in FF8 PC? PC version looks inferior to PS version (emulator).

ForceWare60.72beta has poor compatibility with ff7pc. (I have a bad feeling about this -_- )

If you play ff7 with emulator, you should update to ForceWare driver. However, if you play ff7pc with FX series, ForceWare (I've tested 52.16, 53.04, 56.64) will cause transparency issue. So I recommend old Detonator driver for FX series.

FX series users should use old detonator 4x.xx. (45.3x supports 5900xt, 5700le) Since you use fx5200, you can install 43.45~45.33.  :)

I got a GF4 ti 4200. thus i tried the code change n stuff:

this piece of code
Code: [Select]
Required05 = 200h,

is replaced by this
Code: [Select]
FSAAMode06=ff06
FSAAMode0C=ff0c
FSAAMode0D=ff0d

using that method. SO doesn't this mean that there isn't a REquired05 ne more, or in other words, there is nothing for 2 x 2 mode to draw its requirements from. The code replacing also doesn't work for me in this format. i still have the sameweird lines and ugly backgrounds, so far i tried 45.23 and 52.13 drivers, will try 53.03 now and after that 56.xx

screens from 56.64
this is with the changed code

http://stud.hro.nl/0549792/2x2metbtl.jpg

this is with original code

You need to enable 8bit paletted textures with RivaTuner. :)

It is impossible to solve both grid problem and pixelized background, so you need to make a choice. :roll:

Since 41.09 does not support 2x2 AA, you can choose 8xS AA instead. However, you have to disable AF and texture sharpening, then enable multisample masking. By doing this you can solve grid problem.

If you use gf3 or gf4ti, the text will look a little strange. But that is ok.
(the text will look a little better if you use gf4ti)

You can get clear text by using the ff7.exe from rendition patch. But rendition patch is buggy.

However, if you play ff8pc, gf3 and gf4ti should have better compatibility than fx series.

Sometimes different vertical refresh rate may cause same problem (my poor fx5900xt  -_-  ). You can set the resolution of windows desktop to 640x480, and try to adjust the screen. If you can't fix the problem, you can change vertical refresh rate. Maybe it will work.

The correct codes should be:
Code: [Select]
[ForceWareFSAAModes]
FSAAMode01=2 x 1
Required01=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode02=1 x 2
Required02=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode05=2 x 2
FSAAMode06=ff06
FSAAMode0C=ff0c
FSAAMode0D=ff0d
FSAAMode0E=2x
FSAAMode0F=Quincunx
Required0F=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode10=4x
FSAAMode12=4x 9-tap
Required12=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode13=4xS
Required13=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode17=6x
Required17=200h,
FSAAMode19=8x
Required19=200h,
FSAAMode1A=16x
Required1A=308h,30Fh,338h,33Fh

I removed unnecessary codes, so gf4mx users can set 2x2 AA with ForceWare installed. (with detonator, gf4mx users should use 4x AA)

I also added some codes (mode 06, 0c, 0d).

For gf3/gf4ti/gf4mx users, the codes will be useful (especially for gf4mx users). ForceWare 5x.xx has fixed some graphical glitches for gf3/gf4ti.

For fx series users (I've tested fx5600/fx5900xt), old detonator has better compatibility (forceware 5x.xx is a disaster for fx series users playing ff7pc). And fx5900xt users can use detonator 45.32.

However, gf2mx users don't need to change the codes.

A lot of people have messed up text in FF7 when 8-bit textures are enabled, and to fix it, you disable them in Rivatuner.  Does turning 2x2 AA on fix the text problem, or is it still present, or have you seen it at all?

Yes. Turning 2x2 AA with RivaTuner will fix the text problem and gridline problem. I have these cards (gf2mx, gf4mx, gf3, gf4ti, fx5600, fx5900xt), so I think my advice should be useful for some players.

For gf3 or gf4ti, you can set 2x2 AA, 8xS AA or 6x AA. (if you still use 43.xx or 44.xx. )

(However, if you use forceware 5x.xx or detonator 45.xx, you should use 2x2 AA. Because 8xS AA and 6x AA will cause gridline problem)

NVIDIA's detonator or forceware both support 8-bit paletted textures. With 8-bit paletted textures support, NVIDIA's graphic cards (I've tested gf2mx, gf4mx, gf3ti, gf4ti, fx5600, and fx5900xt) can use 2x2 AA without gridlines problem.

However, fx series users should use old detonator 45.xx, and gf3/gf4ti users should use new forceware 5x.xx :roll:

If you disable DX7 8-bit paletted textures with rivatuner, there will be no difference between ATI's cards and NVIDIA's cards.

Ah, it looks much better now, except for this. It only has this in a few spots, though...

ForceWare 5x.xx has poor compatibility with fx series (I've tesed fx5600 and fx5900xt) in ff7pc. So you may want to use old Detonator 4x.xx. It should solve the problem.

Troubleshooting / Re: [Question] Will FF7 support Chinese?
« on: 2004-01-14 12:12:53 »
Quote from: Jeff Chen
I'm from China, and trying to localize FF7 into Simplified Chinese.

But It seems that there are lots of problems in front of my goal:
1. The tool Cosmo seemed not supporting Chinese characters very well. After saving and loading, some characters messed up.

2. The game itself does not support Chinese too. I wonder if it is possible to make a font for this game. (I can suply a complete collection of Chinese characters)

Can anyone answer me? :love:

Maybe you can find out useful information in squarecn.com :)

The command line "Required05=200h" will set a limit. That means you will need nv20 (gf3) or above to run mode05. And nv17/18 will be blocked by the command line. Therefore, you need to remove the command line, and nv17/18 should be able to run mode05 without problem.

Besides, RivaTuner RC 14.2 (or above) already supports mode05. (FSAAMode05=2 x 2)

So you can edit  RivaTuner.cfg like this way:

[ForceWareFSAAModes]
FSAAMode01=2 x 1
Required01=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode02=1 x 2
Required02=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode05=2 x 2
FSAAMode06=ff06
FSAAMode0C=ff0c
FSAAMode0D=ff0d
FSAAMode0E=2x
FSAAMode0F=Quincunx
Required0F=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode10=4x
FSAAMode12=4x 9-tap
Required12=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode13=4xS
Required13=170h,18Fh,200h,
FSAAMode17=6x
Required17=200h,
FSAAMode19=8x
Required19=200h,
FSAAMode1A=16x
Required1A=308h,30Fh,338h,33Fh
