General Discussion / ePSXE?
« on: 2005-07-06 06:36:26 »
I wouldn't believe anyone would pirate one of the PS1 FF's these days.  You can get them for what, $5 on ebay or in the bargain bin at your ebgames/gamestop?

That didnt do crap, which was why i posted in this thread.

But the issue is now semi resolved: My main system now lets ff7 work *rolls eyes*

EmperorSteele, if you are still reading this do this

Make sure anio filtering and anti-aliasing are still totally off.

Make sure you have the 1.02 patch installed (the one that lets you choose Riva 128/TNT in the FF7 config app)

In the config app click Nvidia and choose "TNT" NOT "Riva 128".

When I have Riva 128 selected I still get the grid, but TNT for some reason solves the problem.  Again, make sure anio filtering an AA are off too.

That fixes the problem just fine for me.  Are you sure you've turned it off for Direct3d games?  (not OpenGL)

Okay, i built myself a low-end rig to run win98, and this way play older games without problems (like ff7).  I've gotten AA sorta working on a geforce 4 mx440, but i get those damned gridlines, no matter what i do or what drivers i download.  The card's not even mine (anymore), so i can't spend too much effort getting that particulair card working.  The default card is some geforce2 mx200.  I swapped cards to see what the problem was, but the 440 doesn't work much better than the 200.

Rivatuner says it doesnt support ANY of the drivers i'm Dling either, whether they be 5x.xx, 6x.xx, whatever.

Fun fact: Under winxp, the very same card worked perfetly, didn't even need rivatuner >=.

I'd rather not install winxp on this rig (I'll do a dual-boot as a last effin resort).  Suggestions?

For the reccord, my main rig with a geforce 6600gt hates ff7 with a passion, so i can't go back to using that =(

Go to your driver options in the display control panel and TOTALLY disable anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing.

The grid lines will go away then.

Just let this thread die, okay?

And of all things, you actually think he referred to the pirates suing us? Geesh, talk about trying to find something to rant about...

Still anyone using it couldn't sue... because *anyone* using it (even if they owned the original) would be breaking the EULA.

So no one needs to worry about getting sued.

And sell it widely on the black market?! Sure! Then, someone gets ahold of a copy and bitches about it not working. Then, they start complaining to us (instead of Eidos, for legal reasons) about the game not working, and then we get stuck in the middle of a gigantic class action suit. Is that what you want? Is that it?

Oh please.  First of all I'm pretty sure anyone who was going to pirate FF7 would have done so by now.  Usually a pirate doesn't say "Oh gee I'll wait 5+ years before I pirate one of the greatest games of all time.  Maybe one day someone will put it all on one CD.  Yea, I'll wait for that day".  At one point you could pick it up in the bargain bin for $5 too.  Even a pirate will put down $5.

Further, who in the world would start a class action suit over a problem they might have for it "not working"?  Someone with TONS of money to blow?  The LEGIT FF7 doesn't work for a lot of people.  How many law suits have resulted?  Oh that's right - zero.

How would they even have standing to sue?  The software would be (technically) illegal.  That's like stealing a car and then sueing the guy you stole it from when the tire goes flat.  Sorry - it doesn't work that way.

This is just unrealistic hysteria.

Anyway - my opinion on this.  It would probably be easier just to put it on one DVD.

A hex editor might work...  But as it is an SNES game it's just a guess.

Would using AA or AF reduce the background jaggies?  that's the only thing i'm not liking atm.

No - the card is not actually rendering the back ground (it is primarily a 2-d image) and therefore it can not enhance the image quality.  FSAA and AF are for 3d rendered graphics.

I mean no offence to anyone here if they do, But you have to be a sad bastard to read the EULA whenever you install a game....I mean...You buy halo for the PC the day it comes out, you pop the dvd in the drive and bam...You are compulsed to read a 56 page essay about what you are allowed to do with the copy you just forked out 40 quid for.  You're not going to read it. You're just goping to click ok and get installing!

Actually the license is only a page....

Also, I just wanted to let him know that if he was serious about enforcing HIS license (which is invalid) he wouldn't be able to do so because apparently he didn't realize that while he was apparently expecting his to be followed he had to violate a license to begin with.  (ironic)

I have finished and released the patch! You can download it from my website in the hacks section. The patch cannot be redistributed without my permission.

Enjoy!

Errr.  Not to be nit-picky, but unless you have written permission from Square (or you actually wrote Final Fantasy VII and have the rights to it) you can't say that you own any modifcation to the game - rather you wrote it or not.  In other words - if someone distributes it besides your self you shouldn't expect much from the courts, or from Square.

You were not even legally allowed to write the patch to begin with under the terms of the license agreement.  (when you entered in to a legally binding agreement not to modify the game when you installed it)  Thus you can not own any modification to the game.

There was actually a case several years ago in which someone wrote a patch for software he did not write.  The company that made the software actually decided he did a good job and used his patch in an official patch.  He took them to court and was ruled against.  The court decided he had no right to it.

Makes sense actually.  If you could own a patch for software you didn't write to begin with (especially when the license agreement says you can't modify the software or distribute modifications) then you could go around patching software you didn't make, then telling the people who actually wrote the software to buy the patch from you before they could make the same modification/fix to their own software.  That wouldn't be very good at all.

Specifically these parts of the license agreement I refer to:

"Your license confers no title or ownership in this Program and should not be constructed as a sale of any rights in this Program."

"User's Responsibilities.  Except as may be permitted by applicable law and this Agreement, you may NOT:
*  Decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble the Program and its components.
*  Modify, copy, reproduce, rent, add or delete components or files, or produce derivative works based upon the Program in whole or in part."

"Export or re-export this Program or any copy or *adaptation* in violation of any applicable laws or regulations."

So legally even *you* are not allowed to distribute this patch, nor were you allowed to write it.

Anyway - as a software author my self I just don't think people should claim rights to things they don't have a right to.  And I get the feeling you (and this site) respect copyright laws your self, so just an FYI for future reference.

I think the mod community for final fantasy is great and unlike any other.  But let's please respect the fact that ultimately Square owns Final Fantasy and any modification per copyright law and the license - not individuals in the community.

I don't have FFVII installed right now, but if anyone wants to try different refresh rates that you can't select in your display control panel you can do the following

1. Go to Start menu -> Run
2. Type DXDIAG
3. Click on More Help tab
4. Click on override.

Not sure if it will work (as I'm not sure if the race is using direct draw), but if it is then maybe it can be slowed more.

Ah yes, the gray area of no-CD cracks... What's the current legal status of them again?

It is about as legal as every other FFVII modification.  According to the license agreement you are not allowed to modify the game.

So in answer to the question - it's on the same footing as every other FFVII mod - against the license agreement, but something Square isn't going to take action against.

<sigh>  I never said 60hz didn't cause head aches.

The fact is though when you are locked at 60hz you are also locked at 60fps.  I.e. motorcycle goes at 60fps instead of 200fps.

Uhm... no it doesn't. Setting/locking the screen refresh rate doesn't affect the actual FPS of the game, unless it's a REALLY simple engine which always waits for vsyncs (which I don't believe FF7's does). If in doubt, consider Quake III running at 140fps. That doesn't mean 140 frames are pushed to the screen every second, merely to the graphics memory. Besides, locking DirectX's framerate is quite a ...uhm, crude way to fix a single game. No offsense.

No one said locking the screens refresh rate effects the actual FPS.  Obviously you can run at 60hz and get 80FPS frames.  You, of course, will get some tearing as a result.

However, we are locking the hz of the DD API *not* the monitor.  This WILL cause the FPS to be equal to or less than the hz specified.  This is identical to enabling Vsync in your Quake 3 example.  At that point the game will NOT exceed the specified hz (FPS).

"Crude way to fix a single game".  You realize this effects DD don't you?  Not D3d.  How many games do you play that use DD?   (I'm not even sure if FF7 is using any kind of DD here... which is why I was not sure if this would work).

Besides, if it fixes it some people wouldn't mind the minor effort it takes to switch it and back.

50 Hz visibly flickers, while 60 Hz merely proves to be annoying as it becomes a strain on your eyes and is a never-ending source of head-aches.

Wouldn't that just make the screen flicker instead of being smooth?  :o

A screen always flickers.  This just defines the rate that it does so.

60hz will not visibly flicker.

The thing about 60hz is that it *should* lock the game at 60fps max.

In other words, you are enabling v-sync in another manner.

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone could try this?  I don't have a FFVII save near the motorcycle point to try my self.

Ok I am thinking of the refresh force in DirectX.  Enable it like this. (for DirectX 9)

1. Go to Start Menu -> Run
2. Type DXDIAG and press enter.
3. Click "More Help"
4. Click "Override"
5. Choose "Override Value"
6. Type "60" in the box.  With out "" of course.
7. Press OK.
8. Close DXDIAG.

Ok, then run FF VII and try the motorcycle.  Does it go super fast still?

Archive / How to select "Soundfont MIDI" in FF 7?
« on: 2003-06-26 03:09:23 »
Hi all,

I have an Audigy 2 and Windows XP right now.

I am wondering if it is possible for me to select "Soundfont MIDI Creative AWE32/AWE64" in the FF 7 configuration program and use it?  (as I'd like to use the FF7 dynamic sound fonts that come with the game)

Thanks for any help!!! :-)

Hi,

I was easily able to fix this by changing the sound source.  (I forget if it was from hardware to software of vice versa)  Anyway, it worked.

Archive / FF8 PC EAX Questions
« on: 2003-06-09 05:58:44 »
Hi all,

I have some questions about EAX and FF 8 for PC.

Does FF8 PC support EAX 1.0 or 2.0?

How does this work exactly?  I mean it seems kind of odd for EAX on a game like FF 8.  Is it a noticeable improvement over no EAX?

Right now I have a Blaster PCI 128 card.  If I upgrade to an Audigy 2 will I be able to use EAX in FF 8?

Regardless of EAX, would an Audigy 2 over a Blaster PCI 128 make much of an audio difference in both FF 7 and FF 8.  (I have both for PC)

Thanks!
