"annoying tutorials at the beginning of the game that won't go away no matter what you do" - FF8, and this really does happen.

Wrong. Learn to press triangle, it skips tutorials.

Archive / FF8 worldmap lag??
« on: 2003-08-23 03:02:49 »
Alright, here's the deal.

I notice the worldmap feels a bit choppy on ff8, finally after getting tired of cd3 I took a break, and decided to pop in ff7.

ff7 however, has a worldmap that is completely lag-free... yet the game runs on software, as ff8 runs on d3d...

Is there any small fix for this ff8 problem, or should I just ignore it?

Archive / Modifying the ff8 engine???
« on: 2003-08-20 23:37:35 »
It wasn't that I didn't bother, things always come up when I'm at the end of an ff game.

Right now in FF8 I'm in the final area,
With ff7 I got to the final battle and had to format (pc gave me a few problems)
With ff9 I couldn't get into the game.

I wanted to finish ff7 but on the 4th time going through the 1st disc, I'm getting a bit tired of it :)

Thanks alhexx...but...

How far is the remake in progress?

I'm sure I could help with something :). Whether it be the story or somethin small, such as testing.

I picture modifiying the FF8 engine as in... changing maps, character models... sort of like a "mod" or a total conversion type thing... I'd still like to play it either way.

As for the other posts,

I just get tired of ff7's story, the graphics aren't -THAT- bad. I just don't like the world/field map character models :).

I'm not sure if this is possible but...

If it were possible..

Could someone modify the ff8 engine and change... just about everything? (music, models, text, maps, etc)...

If it could be done... It would be alot easier to remake ff7 on the ff8 engine (I think it is the same engine, but ff8 looks alot better [optimized version of the engine?])... The battle models for ff7 could be re-animated for world mode in ff8.. and if the maps were to be changed, well, I'd start playing ff7 again...

The reason I don't play it now : I get to the end of disc 1 and get sick of it, I honestly like ff8 a bit more than 7... I'm not asking to be flamed about it though. I have a right to my opinion as you have a right to yours.

General Discussion / Hunting for "Story" people

I've got ff7PC, and I play it quite a bit... I wouldn't mind helping out if I could.

How bad is it? I saw screenshots and thought "my god... IT LOOKS WORSE THAN 9!"

If it -does- have a story... it will be the exact same for everyone, so I don't think I'll bother with it...

I mean, if it had a story that all players affected, it would end up being affected by one idiot who played 23 hours a day.. That might end up being me, but nonetheless I dont like the idea.

Sir Canealot...

Shutup, you didn't have to read this, and if its a waste of bandwidth, thats your problem, not mine.

Anyway, thx for not burning me Rubicant and Mofokubik, I didn't know they were similar... but...

If you think about it...

How could it be possable?

I mean... even if you did manage to do it, the character positioning would be off, because the backgrounds would be stretched... and you'd be running into walls without knowing it... I think :P

Here's my thoughts on a few of the ff games that I've played

I never really got into the first 6, though I'm sure they are good games (If tactics comes out on PC I'll buy it).

FF7 - Great game for its age, still fun to play. Materia system is kind of annoying though.

Downsides -
Buggy PC Version
Graphics are ok, even for its time.
Materia system, I just dont like it

FF8 - Great graphics for its time, the first disc was great, 2nd was ok, and I stopped playing when space came into the idea. (I'm playing through it now, I just finished dollet but I won't quit when space crap comes into play).

Downsides -
Plot is pretty strange
Love story (bleh)
Space crap

FF9 - I first saw this game and said "oh my god... these characters look like sh!t". Honestly, I really couldn't get into the game, it had a feeling that I was supposed to be ages 6-10 to play it. I really didn't like it... at all. I got to what a friend says was "one of the last 2 or 3 battles" before I took it back (rented).

FF10 - Never played it, heard it was 50% cinimatics...

If square was more open to people, they would continue releasing PC versions... but I guess I have to wait for ff11 or ff12... the MMORPG

Is it possable? I mean... 640X480 isnt quite my thing, I'd prefer if I could run it in 800X600 or 1024X768 (thats how high my TV goes, so I really dont care how much higher it -could- go :P)

I mean, on the monitor it looks like CRAP at 640X480, on the tv its alright, but is it possable to go higher?

General Discussion / FF7 Remake??

Windows XP has nothing to do with it.

Hardware issues are most of the problems, I dont have ANY problems... in software, because Edios is such a horrible company, they didnt add opengl, and they only support the cards that only people with "1995 point and click skillz!!!" have.

If anybody wants to make an ATi patch for hardware, count me in for testing... software runs perfectly, but I mean... its hideous.

Tried that...

No luck... is FF8(friend is offering me it for 15$) this bad?

(Eidos did such a horrible port on this... I'm suprised they are still in business... if they even are)

I think this might be due to the fact that I've gone into my video card and tweaked it for performance.

Everything is set to the LOWEST possable in the opengl/d3d control panels, but I

HAVE AN ACTUAL NVIDIA RIVA TNT! Lol... Its 4 years old I think, but it still works.... That doesn't mean I'll uninstall my Radeon.

The model is a radeon 8500LE(128 meg). I'm running the catalyst 3.6... on the 3.5 I couldn't seem to fix the winxp drag/scroll lag, so I had to mess with drivers until the 3.6 came out.

I'm sick and tired of getting a horribly laggy gameplay, so I tried that XP Patch... didn't work... well, it did, I mean, combat is GREAT, but...

Colors are messed
I have no backgrounds

Does anyone have a Radeon card here and know how to run it in D3D?

Has anyone thought of writing opengl for this game? Everybody loves openGL, it would probably fix all the problems... though it would take a while to implement it, and I assume the patch would be rather large...
