Just copy-pasted the text from the readme.txt and didn't set URL tags. The message board created the link automatically. Well, fixed now.

2
You can download the soundfont here (link down).
It hasn't been completed yet because there are still a lot of errors in the midis. I found out how to fix the problem with the missing instruments after the first loop but was too lazy to examine all of the files right now. There will be another release when I've got more time to complete the patch, this is more like a teaser.

Included songs are:

"Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY VII" (FINAL FANTASY VII Reunion Tracks) --> Overworld map
"Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY VII" (FINAL FANTASY VII Reunion Tracks) --> Cloud's memory (second part)
"Fight On!" (THE BLACK MAGES) --> Boss battle
"Aerith's Theme" (Piano Collections FINAL FANTASY VII) --> Replaced earis.mid
"One-Winged Angel" (FINAL FANTASY VII Reunion Tracks) --> Final Battle

Installation:
----------------

Note: You need an application to extract the contents of the RAR-archive. WinRAR, for example.

Step 1 - To reduce the downloading time of the archive I compressed the soundfont.
You'll need sfArk to decompress it. Follow the
            instructions of the setup file.

Step 2 - Rename the old "awe.lgp" (for example "awe_old.lgp") in the "midi" folder
of your "FINAL FANTASY VII" path, in case you fuck the patch up entirely. It should be
            "C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\data\midi".
Then extract the file "awe.lgp" from the archive to this path.

   Step 3 - Extract the file "FF7OP.sfArk" to "C:\"

Step 4 - Open sfArk. Click on "File", then on "Open". Choose the
previously extracted file "FF7OP.sfArk". Click on the red start button.
sfArk will decompress the soundfont now. This may take some
time. As soon as the decompressing process is finished you can close the application.

Step 5 - "FF7OP.sfArk" can be deleted. "C:\" now has a new file called "ff7.sf2".
You have to cut and paste it in the folder
            "C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\data\midi\sf2".
Once again, you will have to rename the old file before if you're a complete coward.

Step 6 - Open the Creative configuration program "AudioHQ". Double click on the
"Soundfont" icon and delete the whole bank stack. Choose the right page
called "Options" and set the memory to more than 70 MB. Get back to the
bank stack menu and choose slot "001". Click "Load" and take "ff7.sf2"
from the "sf2" folder of your "FINAL FANTASY VII" path. You can close the
            soundfont window now.

Step 7 - Open "EAX-environment" and choose "Concert Hall" (more reverb) or "Theatre"
(less reverb) depending on what you like.
            Close the "EAX-environment" and "AudioHQ".
Note: If you want to hear other media without reverb you will have to set
environment back to "No effects" after playing FINAL FANTASY VII.
But you have to activate one of the settings while playing the game.
Otherwise, the midi files won't have the slightest bit of reverb.

Step 8 - Go to your "FINAL FANTASY VII" path and start the configuration program
"ff7config.exe". Click on the right page "MIDI" and set the MIDI driver to
Synth A (the description may vary depending on your soundcard - for me it was
"SB Live! Synth A"). Choose "Soundfont MIDI (Creative AWE32/AWE64)"
as MIDI data. Do not click on the test button, just save the configuration
            by hitting the "OK"-button.

You can download it here. It's a trial version, though. You may use it for 30 days only.

Archive / FFVII .str integration...
« on: 2004-03-03 12:07:15 »
Nope, they won't.
1. The movie quality of the PSone version is worse than that of the PC version.
2. These midis are not used, they only were too lazy to delete them from the disc (game developers leave beta stuff on the discs/cartridges very often). The music in the opening and ending are the original files from the PSone version.

Thus, there is absolutely no need for the STR-files.

Troubleshooting / FF7Music...
« on: 2004-03-02 11:20:05 »
The "cintro.mid" file is played there, which is not included in the PSF package.

6
Finished the soundfont.
But there's a small obstacle to overcome: Whenever I try to replace midis in awe.lgp at a file size of 1,75 MB, LGPTools freezes and creates a 1,31 GB file.  :o
Now, what could this be? Is there a size limit for the lgp files? Can I solve this problem by creating a new lgp?

EDIT: Apparently, it's a bug in the replacement code. It doesn't happen when I create a new archive from all the midi files.

7
Soundfonts are more user friendly, that's why I settled for them. Another reason is that FF7Music keeps crashing, never really got this to work on my machine.

8
SF2 can be converted to DLS, but it wouldn't make a big difference.
Ficedula's FF7Music lets you replace the midis with MP3 files or the PSF set.

Tried all different versions: 3D Hardware Mode/Software Renderer with nVidia-Mode on/off (Riva/TNT). Nothing.

EDIT: The problem was that there are many differences between the English and German version EXE files. You can download different 1.02 language versions at FFSF.

Yeah, I definitely did. A winnar is me.

I've listened to all the midis and figured out what sounds different from the PlayStation version. I'll get started on it soon.

@others: As far as I know it is not possible to change or add instruments to the table files - whether it's the S-YXG70 or the S-YXG50.

Archive / XP patch necessary for German language version?
« on: 2004-02-18 19:54:06 »
I'm still in need of this patch because I've got the German PC version of FINAL FANTASY VII. I tried the 1.02 and applied the Chocobo Patch, but that didn't do any good. I can start the game but even before the Eidos FMV is played I get a black screen and the game exits.

There's still the possibility to send me the savegame so that I could play the mini game and pass the scene for you. You wouln't miss anything of the story (of course that doesn't fix the problem for future playthroughs).

The application always crashes upon starting the snowboard mini game. It works if you leave FINAL FANTASY VII and restart it again. Sounds a little bit strange, but that way you're able to pass that scene (worked for me, at the very least).

Archive / FF7 Display problem

Adjusting the screen manually should help.

16
@xeriouxi: The problem is that the XG midi driver doesn't have the chorus in "One-Winged Angel" and I'm not exactly willing to play it without.

17
That's the issue I wanted to point out.
A prime example is "chu.mid" ("Fight On!") with the Yamaha XG SoftSynthesizer. It just sounds one hell of a lot better than with the PlayStation sound driver.

18
Will have to see which method sounds better.

19
There are 74 instruments in the main bank and 6 choir samples. Most of the main instruments are very, very, very short. It should be the complete user sample collection of the PlayStation sound driver, but it's only 3 MB. Even the...well...let's call it "good" soundfont ff7.sf2 is 5 MB and the choir samples are not included.

20
Don't get your hopes up. I know that creating a soundfont is a lot of work and I haven't done it before. But I'm willing to learn and will try my best to enhance the music.

21
What do you think is the purpose of a "perfect" soundfont?
Should it simply sound like the PSone original and fix all the errors of the current release or increase the overall instrument sample quality?
The sound driver in the PlayStation version is not too great (I know it's a first generation title), sounds very synthy to me.
