DESCRIPTION

PSX Triad HD Restoration fully replaces the Triple Triad design introduced in the Remastered version by Square Enix (based on Bandai's Tabletop physical cards game) with a faithful, high-definition recreation of the original PSX design.

The Remastered release brought a redesign of the Triple Triad cards, board, and icons that departs significantly from the classic PSX aesthetic. After years of searching for an alternative that faithfully restored that original design —and never finding one that met the level of fidelity and quality I was looking for— I decided to create it myself.

This mod rebuilds, from the original PSX textures —upscaled, restored, and reworked by hand in Adobe Photoshop 2026— every visual element of Triple Triad:

Card Design: artwork and layout faithful to the original PSX version.
Numbers and Characters: card power numbering and typeface restored to the classic style.
Elemental Icons: element symbols (Fire, Ice, Thunder, Wind, Earth, Water, Poison, Holy, etc.) recreated in high definition.
Game Board and Matt: challenging screen, grid and background restored to the original design.
Cards Back and Frame: the PSX-style card back design and frames with their decorative elements surrounding the board and cards.

All of this was done and tested over a good amount of dozens of hours,  reinterpreting the design and adjusting where needed, with careful attention to fidelity to the original source material.

MOTIVATION

I'm not a fan of the Bandai card redesign included in the Remastered version, nor of the third-party alternatives I've come across over the years, so this mod was born as a personal project aimed at delivering a thorough, faithful restoration of the original PSX Triple Triad design for players who prefer the classic look.

REQUIREMENTS

► A mod-ready version of Final Fantasy VIII Remastered PC.
—I recommend Demaster Tool for this (https://github.com/MaKiPL/FF8_demaster), required as the base mod to load any texture modification.
—Alternatively you can resort to Eden Launcher mod manager, which you can find here on NexusMods.

---

INSTALATION

1. Make sure to be using a Mod-Ready version of the game by running Demaster Tool or Eden Launcher.
2. Download PSX Triad HD Restoration.
3. For a manual installation, Drag and Drop "textures" folder into "...\FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\DEMASTER_EXP\".
Overwrite if asked. Alternatively, you can apply it through Eden Launcher.

---

OPTIONAL ADD-ON: Uncensored Version

PSX Triad HD Restoration is not compatible with the "FF8 Remastered Uncensored" mod.
To cover this, an optional, separately downloadable file for this mod is also provided.

—In order to make it work, Install the base PSX Triad HD Restoration mod first, following the steps above.
—Then, download and install the **Uncensored add-on** as an additional, separate step, applying and letting it **overwrite** the files from the base version.
—Do not install the Uncensored add-on on its own, since it requires the base mod to be installed first, as it only overwrites the specific files affected by the uncensoring.

---

UNINSTALLATION

—Manual: Delete the mod's files from within  "...\FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\DEMASTER_EXP\Textures\".
(it's always recommended to back up your files before installing any mod so you can revert changes easily).
—Eden Launcher: disable or uninstall the mod from the launcher itself.

---

COMPATIBILITY

—This mod is only compatible with the Remastered version of FFVIII, although a version for the non-Remastered is getting ready.
—Compatible with any mod that does not modify the same Triple Triad texture files.
—For said reason, Not compatible with "FF8 Remastered Uncensored", use the optional file Uncensored Add-on from my mod instead.
—If using other UI or Triple Triad mods, load order priority should be set to avoid overwrite conflicts.

I’ve just added them  in the latest version, you Can find them in the General tab.

You are awesome. Just tested it. Thank you.
These would be other features that I would find useful. Again, always up to you, boss:

GENERAL > GENERAL
[Love Points]
—Leave visible the four characters' values so you don't have to click on "Love Points" to open the "drop menu" that shows them. It would help, for example, for streaming purposes.
     Aerith  50
     Tifa     30
     Yuffie  10
     Barret 0

GENERAL > PARTY
[Add Items]
—"Add 99 units of each" button/feature. So you don't have to manually select one by one. Just like you can do with Black Chocobo save editor.
[Add Materia]
—"Add 1 MASTER unit of each" button/feature. So you don't have to manually select one by one. Just like you can do with Black Chocobo save editor.

Generic Hacks & Tweaks
[Unfocus patch]
—"Pause process" button to Pause the process at any time you need, like it currently does when you tab out while playing it through official launcher on PC.
I know your software already has "Unfocus patch", but that only makes the game to not pause when unfocus, just like 7H does and that's the reason why I mention it. It would be a good way to give players the option to Pause at any time just by clicking. Being able to bind it to any key or controller button would be an awesome addition.
[Random battles]
—"Half enccounters" option. It would be a way to not get overleveled while making exploring and game pace better.

BATTLE
—"Target tag" button to toggle the on-screen Target tag icon during battles. Like it would do by pressing "Camera" key while playing the game through official launcher. This feature gets disabled by 7H if you enable Analogue Controls since "Camera" key is used to zoom-in and that's the reason why I mention it. It would be a good way to bring it back for those who find it handy. Being able to bind it to any key or controller button would be an awesome addition.
—"Full party Heal" and "Toggle Limit Bars" buttons that are already included in General > Party, I miss to have them while managing my battle in Battle tab. I feel bad by mentioning it. I don't wanna feel like I'm telling you how to organize YOUR tool.
BATTLE > Enemies > Status
—"Manipulate" option to manipulate the selected enemy with maybe the current character's turn?

And suppose that I can't think of anything else for now.

If you think it is a good idea and you have the time, can you add love points viewer and editor? I have the values in a table, shouldnt be too complicated.

4
Why doesn't Makou Reactor draw some of the characters that are in the window.bin font?
For example, D2 is supposed to be Ú but it doesn't appear.
