Well, individual sysytems are different, and in my personal experience DEP has ALWAYS needed to be disabled for FF7 when running it on a modern OS like Vista/7/8. i have ran this game on around half a dozen laptops in the past few yrs, with different Windows OSes installed, and it always needed to be disabled. DEP is a technology by Microsoft designed to try to prevent malicious apps from running, but it also interferes with some games, especially old games that were created long before DEP came around. Just google "DEP" and "games" or <name of game here> in the same line, you'll see what i mean. if you dont need to turn DEP off then you must be doing something differently..........

if you're using vista/7/8 then you probably need to turn off Data Execution Prevention for the executable files. Here's how:

Start button> right-click Computer> Properties > click Advanced System Settings > Settings (under the Performance header in the Advanced tab) > select DEP tab and then "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select".

Then add the FF7Config.exe file. Make sure to click Apply as well before exiting out. It may also ask you to reboot. Do the same for FF7.exe, or it will crash too. I'm pretty sure this doesnt need to be done for FF8, I have both games installed, unless you're using the Aali's Custom Graphics Driver mod with FF8, in which case you will need to do this because Aali's mod uses FF7Config.exe.

Hope that helped!

This post is not so much for troubleshooting an issue, but to ask some questions. Is there any advantage to using the 1.31 patch rather than Aali's driver? i have used them both together to test and it appears they can coexist, but I wonder if features of one might override the other. For example, when setting a custom resolution with the patch and setting a different one with the Aali driver, the res of the latter overrides the former. I also do not like how the patch puts these huge black bars on both sides of the game (presumably due to the aspect ratio), and doesnt provide for windowed mode. And with the 1.31 patch the Expert Mode appears to be not working, I can't get it to activate, and the available options remain the same. in the patch's readme.txt it states that it fixes 8 bit paletted texture, anisotropic filtering, and FSAA, and texture UV-map compensation. I'm not sure what all this means, and if the Aali drivers does the same things. the res settings of the patch seem rather limited, since i want an exact res that for a window and for the game to fit precisely between the top of my Taskbar and the top of my screen/desktop (i'm using Windows 8 RTM x64 if it makes any difference). Aali's driver allows me to get both. So should i use them together, or just one or the other?

Any feedback is appreciated!

This is my issue:
I have installed FF7 and am using the Aali Custom Graphics Driver mod. I have copied the movies from each game disc to a folder on my hard drive (C:\FF7\Movies\). i also edited the Registry and changed the movies location. When starting the game the movies play fine.....................................but ONLY in that directory. If i move them elsewhere on the drive and then edit the Registry to reflect the new location, they fail to play. I moved them into the install directory of the game but they just wont play. The game plays, just not the movies. So is there any way i can change it? does the Aali driver support playing the movies from any given location on the drive? if so, where do i move them to? Thanks for the help!
