Modding the PSX version
« on: 2010-07-07 01:50:45 »
okay, I'd move to a different thread if there was a place I could discuss this matter more in-depth, I just want to mod the damn game.

I'm sure this game is almost off the radar for pirating anyway, considering Square isn't making direct profits on the game itself anymore. But Pirating talk aside.

Can someone direct me to a forum thread on PS1 modding?
If a reply is something close to "find it yourself" that's fine too. I've used the search a few times, either a link or a good keyword search would help.

Thanks.

There are a few mods for the PSX version out there, unfortunately it is somewhat limited given the fact that the image size needs to stay the same. Your best bet when searching is to look for posts made by Gemini. He is the psx master around here and has worked out some things for the PSX version. Also if i remember correctly there is a difficulty mod available as well.

It has to do with the way the game reads the disc. It does not read by filename, but by sector address of the disc itself. So the game i guess.

There are virtually none and most have only bare bone knowledge of PlayStation hacking anyway, unless you're looking for foreign boards (in that case there are a lot more). I guess your best option is just to ask here and see if people can provide useful answers.

Modding is being done on the PSX version. For instance, I am currently producing REBIRTH for the PSOne edition, a comprehensive rebalance shifting mechanics, element systems and battle AI.

Filesizes aren't necessarily an issue, but going over the normal lengths means you need to change various file lookup tables. Essentially, see my thread on the YAMADA.BIN for kernel / scene size changes, and Gemini's thread on translation tools for his file 'injector', to import new files into ISOs.
