Well, I know they do it at SonicRetro, but I'm not at all sure how they implemented it.

Basically a board visible only to other pending members and mods is created and new users have to post a small essay thing to get posting rights. They are then pending members and have 20 posts to prove they aren't idiots. I think for here it's probably safe to skip the latter part.

I don't know how you'd implement it into each user's stats though. I'm sure someone will if it's an idea being considered ^_^. However, it does mean slightly more work for the mods, so it might be better to dedicate someone to the task of reading and approving the new posts.

Yeah, this is something similar to what we used to do where they had to email me with a reason why they wanted to join qhimm. It was a total pain in the ass keeping up with all the requests sometimes, and if i was busy people were emailing qhimm complaining about it.

Perhaps the staff will discuss options.

SonicRetro uses a heavily modded IPB, though, not a vanilla SMF. And the whole application/pending process has a nasty habit of making the place a bit elitist.

And it doesn't even do a good job keeping idiots out. Loudmouths like Kogen are allowed free opportunity to post all the stupid whiny crap they want, even though just about every word he says is wrong and mostly seems to be for the sake of starting arguments.

But the biggest reason they can get away with it there is that they've got quite a large active staff. I can think of at least three moderators, two admins, one "site staff", one wiki admin, and that's just off the top of my head; I'm almost positive there's considerably more that I forgot. I don't know how much say each of them has in moving people to trial member status, or approving them once they reach their 20 posts, but I'm sure they've enough that keeping up shouldn't be an issue. Compare to here, where the number of staff that's actually active is fairly low (Usually it's just sl, obesebear, Bosola, and me). Sure, we get fewer registrations, but it's FAR less likely that a staff member will be on at any given time.

I agree with what you said about SonicRetro in every respect (especially about Mr. Moanypants).

It was just a suggestion anyway, something I posted a while ago. You could always recruit more active staff. Also, I don't see the harm in new pending members waiting a little while to be approved. In fact, I think that's a good way to test if they're actually joining to post about something useful.

And you'll have to forgive me for saying so, but this place is already elitist. Less so than it used to be, but there are still people here (both old and new) who are super elitist bampots. I don't think implementing this system - whether it's a realistic idea or not - is going to make a tiny bit of difference to that.
