Bootleg Configurator breaks FF7 installation?
« on: 2012-08-05 05:36:48 »
I've read a ton about Bootleg on this site and others, and I got all the mods I wanted to apply to FF7 downloaded, so all the mods that I needed were green in the list. I run the program, and every single time, WITHOUT FAIL, I get an error after I try to start the game up that "FF7.exe has stopped working." I can install individual mods without a problem, but whenever I use Bootleg, it immediately renders the game unplayable, modded or otherwise. Is this something common, am I making a very noob mistake here, or is it something else?

I'm running Windows 7 x64, quad-core. I've got the game running vanilla without a problem, with the 1.02 patch and the latest version of Aali's Custom Graphics Driver installed. Like I said, if I run it without running Bootlegger first, it works fine, but Bootlegger breaks it.

I should also point out that I've tried a bunch of different Bootleg configurations, from minimal to completely customized, and nothing is working. I don't know if it's one specific mod that's killing it, or if it's the program itself. Thanks in advance!

In the FF7 installation folder:
    Run FF7Config.exe as administrator
    Go to the SOUND tab
    In the Sound Driver dropdown list, select your sound card
    Click OK

There is a bug in Bootleg .0039 that installs the wrong sound driver.
The bug is fixed in the upcoming version .040.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I just tried this, though, and it doesn't work. The game launched before I used Bootleg, and now it just crashes immediately. I tried running it through Bootleg, FF7.exe and the FF7 Music. Nothing's working.

Also, I'm thinking, could it be the FMV Restoration that's doing it, since the first thing that happens is a cutscene?

Post the APP.LOG file.
Have you tried running the game using the SAFE SETTINGS in Bootloader?
Also try disabling compatibility mode for FF7.EXE.

Also, where are you installing the game?
Don't install to a system folder such as PROGRAM FILES or USERS.
Install to a location such as C:\GAMES\FINAL FANTASY VII\

Okay, here are two APP.LOG files. I ran the game with just 1.02 and the graphics driver installed first, and then I tried to run it after installing Bootleg. Both APP.LOG files are from after these attempts. In the first APP.LOG file, I noticed the error that ff7input.cfg was missing, so I downloaded one, and it didn't do anything different as far as game launching went.

The game is installed to C:\Games\FF7, and compatibility mode is not enabled. It's running as an administrator, and antivirus was disabled while installing Bootleg and trying to run the game afterward.

Using the safe settings, I'm getting a new error about how my OpenGL is the Microsoft Renderer, and I'll experience extreme lag.

Thanks again for all the help -- It seems to be something on my end, since I've never heard of these problems before.

The game isn't using your Nvidia GPU.  It's using software emulation. Check that your Nvidia card is the default.

Hi pedrovay2003

The file "ff7input.cfg" is generated by the game itself if you go in game in the menu and select the option config. In it, among other things, the keyboard layout is available.
If you do not need the laptop key patch, you should not copy any other file.

Start again "FF7Config" as admin, but now choose all tabs. Choose the right equipment and do the tests.

Okay, I tried to do this again, and it still didn't work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, so I decided to do a screen capture and just upload it to YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Io0On4pBxc4&feature=youtu.be

For the purposes of not boring anyone to death, I used a virtual drive to mount the install and play discs of Final Fantasy VII. I've tried doing this entire process with the actual, physical discs in the drive, however, and it's literally no different. (Also, I apologize, but for some reason, the mouse cursor didn't show up in this video. It shouldn't make too much of a difference.)

I hope this helps a bit, because I'm totally lost at this point.

@Kompass

Ah, okay, thanks for clearing that up. I won't do that again.

try by setting the Final Fantasy config v1.02 to Nvidia and TNT to get the fail of the 8 bit paletted textures to be gone
and maybe you need to set your resolution to match your screen resolution too in the bootloader config option
if that doesnt fix it i wouldnt know where else youre going wrong.

Hi pedrovay2003

The app.log both times end with "sound initialized".
Maybe your audio driver is corrupt.
If you install a new audio driver, please do not forget to start again ff7config.

I updated my audio driver, and the same thing happened. :(

I also tried this same process on an older Windows Vista computer, and instead of getting an error message, the screen just stayed black. All of this is directly related to Bootleg, it has to be -- If I install mods individually, the game still runs. I was just trying to make everything automated, but it's really fighting me. I have no idea why I'd be the only person having issues with this.

Hi pedrovay2003

One more idea:
Maybe the files in the folder [game folder]\data\sound are defective.
Rename the two files and copy the original files from the installation CD.

BTW I recommend as long as the game does not work inside "ff7_opengl.cfg" the options "compress_textures = off" and "use_shaders = off" to use.

Okay, I tried both of those options, and it's still not working. Same error, nothing's changing.

However, there's a new development now -- I tried to download Bootleg 0038, which came out just before the version we have now. That one worked. The mods installed and the game ran without a single issue. Sound worked, cutscenes work, custom resolution worked, EVERYTHING. It has to be something with the current 0039 Bootleg that's stopping it from working.

I did my first installation with 0037 and had none of any issues! In combination with ulgp 0.5 gui (I had some problem with 0.7) I could follow the updates. And I have my game installed in program files (system directory)

Again, the issue is most likely a corrupt sound driver registry entry.
This is fixed by running ff7config.exe as administrator, going to the SOUND tab and selecting the correct sound card.
If you don't run as administrator, the setting are not saved.

64-bit .reg sound driver fix:
Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Sound]
"Sound_GUID"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

I just tried that, and it's still not working. Changed the registry entry, ran everything as an administrator, nothing. Only 0038 works for me. Which I'm fine with, to be honest, I'm just curious as to why nothing later than that is working.

I don't understand how it could be a sound driver if the ONLY difference between making it work and breaking it completely is using an older version of Bootleg. But if I have to use an older one, I'm okay with that, too. And I want to thank you for all the help and attention you've given me this entire time, too, by the way.

Hi PitBrat

In W7 64bit there is still another set of keys!

Quote
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII
This key phrase is with me, at least in part, the decisive one.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Square Soft, Inc.\Final Fantasy VII\1.00\Sound
"Sound_GUID"=hex:fb,bd,10,e3,98,fd,3b,49,95,3b,73,44,d7,40,44,19
"Options"=dword:00000000
"SFXVolume"=dword:00000064

This works for me.
The other key is (at least in the graphics options, which I have tested!) Had no effect on the game.
You can test it yourself.
Just remember your values, change the setting with ff7config and see which key was changed.

I hate to revive an old thread like this, but I am having this exact same problem.  Unfortunately using an older version of Bootleg as a workaround doesn't seem to make a difference for me though.

I have tried all the suggestions provided in this thread, but nothing seems to make a difference.  Like the OP, I am able to run the game after installing and patching, but as soon as I run Bootleg, I get the black screen followed shortly by the application crashing.  Any words of wisdom as to what I could try to get this to work?

Btw, here is my APP.LOG output:
