Strange controller behavior
« on: 2012-08-30 06:47:11 »
Apologies if this has been posted before.

I have a FF7 installed with Aali's mod and the FF7 psx music. I have a wired Microsoft Xbox controller with drivers correctly installed and a properly configured Xpadder. I run it from the FF7 music application.

I'm very confused by this problem so I'm gonna explain it carefully.

What has been happening is the buttons on the controller somehow don't respond correctly. Occasionally the button I have mapped to OK will Cancel and the button I have mapped to Switch will sometimes be OK or occasionally even Cancel. The very weird part is it's sporadic. It's almost random. The keyboard input works fine but the controller gets funny, however this is only in FF7. It works fine with all other games. At first I just dealt with it and played through it but when I got to the squatting minigame in the Wall Market it was impossible to do it correctly because the button input was changing almost randomly. I could sometimes do a complete squat but often the inputs would change. In battle sometimes OK becomes cancel and I have to spam the button to get it to attack. Navigating menus is a nightmare.

I've tried searching but it's difficult to find search terms describing this problem.

odd problem, i remember someone once having a similar problem, if it is the same problem it was caused by having 2 inputs, xpadder inputs controller keys and the game itself can use the controller (so every time you press a button on your controller it gets 1 input from the controller and 1 from xpadder),
if it is the same problem to solve the problem you could just not use xpadder, the game does work with a 360 controller without the need for xpadder (although triggers on the controller don't work so you have to configure the controls inside FF7 to what you want them to be and also the dpad doesn't work you have to use the control stick)
Or you could use custom a custom driver like "XBCD" for 360 controllers (that's what i use) which will allow you to map your controllers buttons so you can tell it to use triggers as buttons so they can be used in ff7 and you can also enable it to use the dpad instead of the control stick or you can make it so it can use both.
Hope this helps with your problem (if your problem is the same).

Thanks very much, that makes sense. I'll try it without xpadder and XBCD for now and perhaps try XBCD later and update this thread.

Edit:

Works fine now without xpadder :), although I did like having L2 R2 equivalents and navigating menus with the joystick is a bit of a pain.

Glad that worked :), like i say if you grab "XBCD 0.2.7" and install it, you will be able to enable dpad and the triggers as buttons so you will be able to use them if want them but the game should play fine with the controller as is.

I ended up using xpadder for only the triggers and dpad. Works pretty nicely also a side benefit I found I used the adjusted turbo with the triggers at the Gold Saucer's Super Dunk game to simulate holding down the OK button and let it go at the perfect time. Easy 300 GP
