Any discoveries about playing with a Mac?
« on: 2013-10-23 03:15:17 »
I was just curious if and wizards have made any advancements in playing the pc release on a Mac as my dell laptop is fried and I miss these wonderful mods.

Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure that FF7 runs in wine >>see winehq.org
Or commandeer a copy of Windows, set it up in parallels and take it from there

hmmm I'm definitely more interested in the parallel approach.

But has anyone around here been able to run things like pitbrats bootleg while using parallel?

Thanks for the response by the way!

Bootleg is more likely to work correctly in a VM such as Parallels than in Wine.

Good to hear, I'll have to work on setting this up. I imagine xp or vista would be the cheaper windows OS choices out there these days

I saw that and was interested but weary because I have zero experience with wine. If I can't find a cheap copy of windows I might give it a try this weekend.

*edit*

Unless I'm overestimating the complexity of running wine on a mac?

I believe you are over estimating its complexity

Here's a pretty straightforward walk through of the process although there are many guides and different ways to get it installed

I recommend setting up the beta build

Installation can get messy but once wine is situated properly, running ff7 is as easy as clicking a button as per good ol' winders

My friend bought a windows 7 disc and ran bootcamp and it worked great, no performance issues or anything.

Yeah, you guys are convincing me to find a copy of windows and try it that way.

Sorry, I'm new to using a mac so I was unaware of these applications.

Thanks for the input! I forgot how damn helpful everyone is around here

*edit*

I'm downloading a (from what I've been told) legal trial of windows 7 from Digital River right now with plans on attempting to set up the game with various mods using bootleg. (All through Bootcamp.)

I'll update with my findings here as well as a few system specs, if that's okay, as a feeble attempt to give back to the forum!

If that update is unneeded or better fit for another place in the forum please let me know.

Sounds like youre going for a release candidate or beta version, I suggest you use that offline only because those versions arent supported with updates and thus have very bad security. Make sure you plug off your ethernet cable whenever you boot that and transfer all files you need from your mac operating system.

If its some other kind of trial version I guess it will be unusable or unsupported after a certain amount of time. Im not a Microsoft manager but I suggest you just buy Windows 7 :D

hmm I haven't opened it yet or anything but I'll definitely keep that in mind. Yeah if all goes well I'll be purchasing a hard copy, I'm not too thrilled about downloading a supposed trial but I didn't want to blow the money before I knew I could make this work.

Thanks for the tips!

No probs. Possibly bootcamp maybe a little bit tricky with win7 as it was designed for xp in the first place. I know its absolutely possible to do but there may be some things to pay attention to. If your installation should cause any trouble let me know, Im quite good at this kind of stuff as I put months of work in doing it the other way round: Getting an unmodded retail os x to work on my windows pc. Today its not that hard buying the correct hardware and running kakewalk but back then I had to configure all the chameleon stuff by hand so I hope I remember some stuff about win7/os x dual boot systems.

*update*

Does this look normal to anyone?

Im running in parallels. I already ran bootleg once, the eidos logos was lagging a lot and I got a window before that saying something about open gl detected microsoft graphics card and the game would run very slow.

I don't know what to alter at this stage if anything?

update, heres that window:

Thanks in advance

*edit* been up for hours and fixed that problem myself  8-)
