« on: 2014-05-18 15:26:29 »
Sorry can't find the other thread that someone has replied to abotu this so I'm putting it here:

Final Fantasy III on steam

I'd love to watch some mods for this one, like HD character models, when it will be released...

Yeah I added it to my wishlist last week. It looks like the models have a few more polygons than they did in the DS version. This is a good thing, since too straight a port of the DS version wouldn't really be passable on a PC game in 2014.

Just looks a bit upscaled. I'm not going to get it though since I have FF3DS and it took me forever to decide to finish it.

This is a bad joke. Some no-name company's did made a true HD release of their DS game (Dementium) and huge company like Square Enix release a nearly identical looking game. I stick with the DS version at last there I won't see so easily all the tricks they made to keep a small polycaunt.

I found some footage of the released game on YouTube, and it actually looks significantly better than it does on DS. Many of the textures have clearly been redrawn, and some of the models are indeed higher-poly than they were on the DS.

There is no texture filtering. Also the monster doesn't look to have upscale textures. :'(
But this video is a much better presentation as the Steam trailer. I wonder if it is modable.  :?
I guess they will use a OpenCL solution for the rendering, so a Sweetfx or ENB aren't an option to smooth the textures...

I got the steam port, it's not bad, and looking at its file structure, looks like it'd be quite easy to mod... All we need is a way to extract and recompile its archive format and we can fix those low res textures. Its music is in looping ogg format, so that can be swapped out easily (not that there's anything wrong with it now).

EDIT:

For anyone who want's more info on whether the port is worth buying... It's definitely higher res than the DS version, it looks sharp. The opening FMV has some nasty upscaling artifacts, but it's just an mkv file so it'll be easy to replace. The font seems to have some weird glitch where it displays erroneous pixels here and there around the text, not sure what that's about. The textures on the low poly models look decidedly old-school with massive pixels, far worse than say FF8 on PC. They could really do with some modding. One nice touch is, it has the same launcher window as FF7 and 8 on steam. Points for consistency lol.
