FF8 Speed Problems
« on: 2003-07-17 23:07:29 »
I am having problems with the speed that FF8 runs with on my PC. On software acceleration, it runs at about half the normal speed (even less with a ton of stuff on screen), and on hardaware acceleration, it runs at about twice the normal speed, music as well, and the graphics flicker like crazy. Is there anything I can do about this?

I have:
Windows XP Pro,
an 8 meg SiS 530/620 video card (newly updated driver),
AMD-K6 3D+ processor, MMX, 3DNow, ~390Mhz
64 Megs of RAM
DirectX 9.0a

I've already tried all of the DirectX troubleshooting tips, too, but none of them have helped at all.

Sometimes FF8 acts finicky with AMD stuff.  Plus, grab the patch for ff8.  That may fix your problem.  If you already did that...make sure you are running in compatability mode for Win98/me.  Then it should work.  Hopefully.

How do I run in compatability mode?

Right click on the program (ff7.exe), and select properties. Inside the properties, there should be a "compatability" tab, or something like that. But don't expect it to be a 100% for sure solution. Compatability mode rarely does anything for older software.

Hey Rubie...I think u meant FF8.exe ^_^

Besides, you might want to run the config program in Compatability mode too....if you have one on and the other off compatability, you may have more troubles.

Doubtful.  All the config program does is change some things in the registry, and they'll be changed the same whether compatibility mode is on or not.

Plus, while compatibility mode helps fix some FF7 problems sometimes, in my experience FF8 has always worked fine natively in XP.  I'm not expecting this to fix anything, but I could be wrong.

The problem may be in your video card drivers.  Of course the game runs too slow in software mode (your CPU is too slow for it).

Try running it in software mode in quarter-screen.  It should run about the right speed then.

Anyway, what I'm getting at, is if software mode runs at the correct speed and hardware accellerated mode does not, its probably a problem with your video card driver - I know you said its newly updated, but I don't know much about SiS cards and how well they work with FF7/8...  Maybe you should spring for a new GFX card.

FF8pc does not support sis6326 video card. Unfortunately, sis 530/620(onboard graphic) = sis6326...therefore it is impossible to run the game without problems....just like poor voodoo1 :z  So you need a new video card. With new detonator 43.xx (or above), a pci version GF2mx will be your best choice

In fact, it is also a hard work running ff7pc on sis6326.

Yeah, I had problems with FF7, too.
I tried that compatability thing. The speed of the characters and stuff was normal on Hardware after that, but the sound was still hyper fast and jumpy, the text boxes were all glitchy, and all of the backgrounds had colorful, horizontal lines across them.
Textures were antialiased, though.

So you're sure there's no way to fix it without having to pay for a new card?
