do you mean that the titles suggest a long story or that they are too long. #
Also it is difficult to write a title without the story

I'm not going to suggest any plausible titles until I have read the whole story.  Since that probably won't happen soon, if at all,  i'm afraid I can't help.  If you can't even think up a title for a finished story, some people might begin to doubt your ability to even write a prequel.  JK! :D

Whoa what the hell is that? Look at shot two! Have you guys put texture compression support and 1024/1024 texture support in? And why do I see Open GL screens flying around!? Is it running in open GL now. Argh *dies* but to the point!

What the hell is Aeris doing in the back row? Silly place to put her really. It will make her important physical atack even weaker. Div   :P

EDIT: What you lot hideing on the audio tab? Come on cough it up. I couldent hope for dolby digetal support could I?

(NB: Since I haven't seen the screen shots myself [Skillsters server is still down] I'm kinda commenting blindly here, but so what, since when has that stopped me?  :D )

1) Yes, it has texture compression support, optional of course :P

2) The game has no maximum texture size. In practice though no card supports above 2048x2048, any anything above 1024x1024 is sloooooooow. None of the textures used at the moment are above 512x512 but if your card supports larger texture sizes, framebuffer effects can use it.

3) Yes, it's in OpenGL because:

  • I like OpenGL  :)
  • OpenGL is easier to use than DX
  • OpenGL is less ... changable ... than DirectX (in other words, when a new version comes out, you don't have to rewrite half your code)
  • I like OpenGL a lot  :)

4) Aeris is on the back row by default, but if you REALLY want to, you COULD change her position, as a LAST RESORT.
 :D

5) Audio tab: Well, that hides REALLY ADVANCED stuff, like which soundcard to use. Better watch out: yes, it can use a soundcard - whooooooooa!

(Actually, it can also use 3d audio and EAX [Environmental Audio], but that's not quite so important at the moment!).

6) Oh yeah, it can also run in any resolution that your card supports. Jari tested it out in 1600x1200 and said it looked fine, which is cool. Note that we can't guarantee the final game will look good in 1600x1200, because any beta testers who can run it properly at that resolution will be killed by me for having a better PC than I do.

*Quickly changes his rez to 1024x768 before Fice notices.*   J/K Fice. I haven't tried it that high yet. But I WAS getting over 100 fps at my rez in the field menu. Nice optimizations! (Before I was getting around 40 fps)

BTW: Those multiple 1024x768 rez options were different refresh rates.

Here's some WORKING screen shots from Alpha 8:

As for the offical name of the remake, we are currently discussing it within the remake group. But we DO appreciate your suggestions.

Optimisation? What optim -- uhhh, yes, of course, I'm a genius programmer after all!

The game still looks "best" at 640x480 as shown here:

http://www.legacy-ovwp.org/~ficedula/remake-shot1.jpg" TARGET=_blank>Shot 1

but it does run pretty well at higher res, and I am constantly improving the quality of the graphics

Ficedula you seem overly happy at the moment. I guess you are a little proud about what you are doing then  :D

Really good work guys. Seems like your getting jiggy with the menu now. Err...have you tryed it on a Geforce 3 system yet? I think not..hint  :D(joke)

Heh. Have you managed to do any other tricks yet then?

Tricks?

Well, the menu system - as you can see - is complete. Everything works; materia affects your stats correctly and adds it's abilities to your command menu, status/elements are calculated correctly, you can use items, etc.

The battle scripting system - the non-visual part, ie. the enemy AI - is 90% complete. You can write "AI Scripts" for the enemies to tell them how to act, and run a test battle between them - but only in "text" mode, there's no graphics on it yet.

Yowza.
Y'know, I was thinking about FFVII (the REAL game), and I thiught that if the story followed cloud, you could call it:
The Man with the Glowing Eyes
Of course, there are many other titles.  Most of which, as I said before, depend heavily on the storyline.
On a differant note, I just finished Ender's Game yesterday, after 3 days of intermittant reading.  I have to say that it has crushed all of my dreams and hopes of ever writing a good book.  I don't think I can top that.   :(
Oh, yeah, another good idea.  Have any of you ever read Harry Potter?  Well, if you haven't, the antagonist in the book is ---------.  Sorry, his name is He Who Must Not Be Named, to be politically correct.  But anyway, that gave me an idea.  To take the foreshadowing to a new level in this game, perhaps you could have Cloud (or whomever is the main charachter) not know who Sephiroth is, never see him, only hear about him.  But you could make Seph influence him in certain ways.  Including, but not limited to, ruining his life.  The cool think you can do with that situation is that all of the players would KNOW who he was, hence, as I said before, taking foreshadowing to a new level and having the charachters walk into obvious traps.  I am reminded of when Cloud runs into the Battle Room in the Gold Saucer, despite the bodies strewn about.  My freind and I shouted, "NO YOU STUPID *@&$ING IDIOT!"  but to no avail.  That, in my mind, would be a good way to take it, and it would make the mystery element even more interesting.
One more thing.  I thought that you were REMAKING the game at first, and I had a lot of ideas, but I lost them.  It occurrs to me that you don't necessarily have to stick to the 'history' of FFVII.  Make it up yourselves.  Wow.  Yet another option.  Keep carving that block of wood!

No! No you dont!

Any way I have a weird system configeration.
You need me to leak- no no to test your program to be sure that other people with weird system configeration can run them  :D :P

Nah just kidding. But if you ever need an unpaid beta tester to do 6 hours of work a day hey I'm here!

i think where gonna close submissions for NAMES, ive decided to un announce the above names till we get something solid plot and game wise to judge the title towards.
not to say there ISNT any plot/game, its just the building needs to be built on the already laid foundations.
no point calling it the empire state building if it ends up looking like the effeil tower  :P
