Is there any way to add scanlines into the game during fullscreen mode? That would make the game graphics a lot nicer...

I see that during quater mode the screen contains scanlines... so anyone has figured out it yet?

Hmmm dude i am a n00b, and since i am a n00b, don't a n00b have the right to post questions about things they don't understand? You were since a n00b, and certainly you had post silly questions before.. please do not use those "insults" indirectly at people...

No need to criticize the newbies for posting questions like this...  But anyway, no you can't add scanlines to FF8 (unless you use the PSX version in an emulator).

It's a "TV" effect (a line=normal pixels and an other line=black or dark pixels)... This effect is not very good I think

the matter of fact is scanlines makes graphics looks better... scanlines are normal *dark* grey pixels lines across the screens.

i've tried FF 9 with epsxe, a PS emulator, and with scanlines enabled, it looks less shabbier. and the FPS seems to have speed up a bit (or should i say the FPS stays more constant in my comp XD)

So, thats why i wanted to ask if i can actually add scanlines to the game... >_<"

Quarterscreen mode for what?  Hardware or Software rendering?  If its hardware, then I'll be very surprised.

It would be cool for scanlines in FF8...might be enough to cut down on the pixelization (sp?) we see on the pre-rendered backgrounds.

If you really want 'em, though, I suggest you try to play the game on a comp that has a TV-out, as then you can use the TV to add the scanlines without a performance hit, since the card would not have to first draw the image and then draw alternating lines on top of it....

Yup in quarter screen, hardware acceleration. If you were to look at it closer, you can actually see scanlines (which is what i saw). The low-resolution fonts were a lot nicer with scanlines. I will post a screenshot on those scanlines later. :D

FF8 quarter screen does not have any scanlines.  It may have been your monitor.

See the image (enlarged to 2x size on bottom): No scanlines.

It would be silly to have scanlines in quarter-screen mode but not in full-screen mode anyway.

Anyway, in response to xeriouxi, check this out...  At the top you see the original picture, and then you see it in three different forms.
1. Double size
2. Double size with full scanlines (every other line is black)
3. Double size with partial scanlines (every other line is shaded)

So now you know what scanlines are.  They help make images look less blocky when you double their size... I personally prefer other forms of filtering.

An explanation just occured to me....

....could it be that your monitor runs 640x480 as an interlaced display mode?  Most of the time the scanline effect is the result of an interlaced image, IIRC.

I might be getting my terminology mixed up here (and as a result, may completely butcher what I'm trying to explain), but this is my understanding as far why an interlaced display mode could produce scanlines:

Most monitors run using a non-interlaced display mode, which means they draw the entire image to the entire screen during each display update (i.e., one "refresh").  This is different than what analog TV's do, in which case they draw only half the image to the entire screen during each refresh.  Note, though, that when I mean "half the image", I mean "every other line of pixels".  Thus, at any given time we see an image with black lines after each line of pixels being displayed.  And for some reason, they call images displayed in such a way as being "interlaced".

Now, I've heard that there are some monitors out there that support certain resolutions as an interlaced mode, and others as a non-interlaced mode.....though I heard this a long time ago...

You're right about some monitors supporting interlaced modes.  In my experience, both the monitor and video card driver must support it, and I'm pretty sure you have to specify that you want to run in an interlaced mode.  I'm pretty sure that FF8 wouldn't run in an interlaced mode, but you never know.  But you'd also be able to see it in full-screen mode... FF8 uses the same screen settings for both modes, just one doesn't fill the entire screen.

Ah well, I dunno, but I do know that you can't get FF8PC to run with scanlines without some form of patching (that is not available ATM), sorry.

My monitor kinda adds scanlines to low resolutions, but the image is not interlaced.

I don't know why you think scanlines make ff8pc a lot nicer.

You can see my old snapshots. What you need is a correct AA mode. Like 2x2 AA. Just download RivaTuner v2.0 rc14.2 and tweak your Detonator/ForceWare!

8xS AA only works on gf3/gf4ti with 43.45/43.51. So you have to set 2x2 AA instead.

The thing with Scanlines is they can act like a type of "free" AA on the image.  Ever notice how jagged an SNES sprite looks on a non-interlaced monitor, in comparison to how not-jagged it looks on a TV?

Same thing with the PSX and N64.  They were only doing 320x240 res, but the scanlines on the TV image prevent you from seeing a lot of the jaggies without a performance hit on the video hardware.

Yeah, the interlacing done by the TV plus the fact that TVs are less sharp than a monitor usually makes 320x240 images not look that bad.  But still, I think there are better ways to get a better image than just adding scanlines :P

Since you use gf2mx 200, you can try 4x AA.

Run RivaTuner -> Main -> Driver settings -> click the arrow near「Force Ware detected Custimize…」-> click D3D icon -> Antialiasing

You can find out AA methods in "Antialiasing".
