FF7PC - Corel Prison crash
« on: 2004-08-24 21:35:18 »
i know about the Chocobo Race patch, and i have patched my exe in anticipation for this problem, but i am encountering another crash even before this event!

when i walk into the house to confront Barret, and it goes to a flashback scene, the game crashes each and every time when the screen fades to white after Barret and his friend jump off the bridge and run to the left of the screen. music continues, but screen stays white.

i don't believe this is the Chocobo Race problem, though the two events are very close on the timeline. has anyone else experienced this problem and know of a solution? i don't believe it has anything to do with my hardware, as the game has run perfectly from the beginning, this is the first major error i've encountered. thanks for any replies.

uhm, other than the old "try running at quater screen and or software mode", i cant think of anything that would help.  There's a chance you're somehow mising a background file, but that wouldn't make sense.

Just inc ase, abck up your saves, and do a full reinstall, just to be safe, i guess.

the chocobo crash is a different entity all together.  it runs on a kinda different engine, and tries to access a restricted part of memory in winxp.  Your crash is bound to be something else entirely...

thx for the suggestion.
i uninstalled/reinstalled, loaded up the old save game, same results.

the error that is coming up references 0023053f in ff7.exe. don't know if that helps any.

quarter screen yielded the same results also. i think somehow one of the files is corrupted during installation (right, doesn't make much sense).

i have uploaded a save game file directly outside the house in Corel Prison - if someone can load this up really quick, pass the flashback and resave in the same spot, that would be most helpful to me. my email is steve at heavy-industries dot net. thanks!

oh also, it's been years since i played this so i barely remember these movies and storyline movements... can someone also describe what Barret says/sees in his flashback, and what happens immediately afterwards? do you get to leave the house and continue on, or are you whisked away somewhere else?

It could be a bad file...but it also could be that the flashback is shocking the Video Driver.... quarter screen usually bypasses any video driver hickups, but sometimes you have to do things a bit more drastic and change to older versions....or newer.

What video card are you using...what are your specs?

Could also be your Sound Driver.... putting the sound Acceleration to Basic mode may bypass a sound driver problem. type dxdiag and go to the sound tab, to change the Sound Acceleration to Basic mode.

i thought about this also... but strange that none of the previous flashbacks have resulted in a crash... i doubt the programming is all that different throughout these scenes. but i'll try your suggestion, thanks.

specs are pretty low , dont make fun of me...

AMD Athlon 900mhz
1gig ram
ATI RADEON 8500 AGP
SoundBlaster SB Live!  (i think it's the Platinum version though it's displayed as Value in my device manager... not entirely sure there)
Samsung SM-352B SCSI DVD/CDRW

pretty sure everything is flashed/updated to latest drivers all around. i'm also on Windows XP Pro, at DirectX 9.0b. i haven't updated to Service Pack 2. that's about all the specs i can think of that are important.

It's not really that strange... Who ever programmed FF7, didn't do a consistant job.

If I were to guess what's causing the crash, I'd guess the Sblive card. make sure you have the latest sound drivers. I have FF7 crashes too, during movies and such, but in my case it's because I have a SBlive card with Win98....Creative hasn't updated the drivers for Win98 and they never will. Basic Sound Acceleration mode gets me thru.
