Searching for MIDGAR Images!
« on: 2004-09-11 18:31:24 »
Warning: FF7 SPOILERS

I'm making my first attempt at modeling Midgar (3DsMax 5). Yep, looks pretty neat too!

Not too difficult, except for Shrina HQ :o . Shots of the back area (behind  and below that large keg'er) of Shrina are very slim! Only one dark and fuzzy shot exists in the game (also 1 close shot that’s too close to be of any help).

-----

Anyone know of any Non-InGame artwork/promos/demos that might help? :erm:

I've already...
    1. Combined all Midgar related moves off of the game itself,
     2. Collected 4 different Midgar Wallpapers (1 close front, 1 far front, 1 cloud in front of Shrina HQ, and a different 3d cloud in front of Shrina HQ)
     3. Found one promo movie (thanks to these forums), showing Midgar, half way completed (fuzzy image and wrong angle).[/list:u]
Again, I'm looking for back shots of Shrina HQ.
:( There seems to be a large "V" support, on each side, that extends up to the "Unknown" area I seek. You can catch a quick glimpse of it's tip (in the first movie that shows the Cannon @ Midgar) and what might be it's 'base' (when Rufus dies). I can't confirm "WHERE" these supports begin or end!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Fancy a collaboration?

Images from the animated camera matching opening.avi (filenames beginning "t") and a few others here:

Just need to finish modelling sector 8 and I'll be able to copy them to all other sectors (that detail is identical, except for sector 6, obviously). Also includes the animated camera from opening.avi for a full fly-through; major detail in sector one (where Aeris emerges from, area with clock), Shinra HQ, and train station/md1_1/md1_2. How's yours doing?  :)

    Wow! Simply GORGEOUS!
Your obviously - way - ahead of me! LOL, I just started 2 days ago. Haven’t even done anything ‘sector related’ yet.

Dang! Midgar is just beautiful, isn't it? Oh, anyway..

Collaboration? I'm no pro, but email me if you’re serious and I'll show you what I can do.
    - I'll post more later. Time to ogle these new Midgar pics. –

I know what you mean about the bit behind Shinra HQ btw - but I think I've got the general shape sorted (in my mind, if not in the scene :)). Check out fallpl.avi in combination with that one where Rufus dies and you pretty much get the shape. I'll get onto that bit at some point... so much to do, so little time.  :)

I'll email you when I next load up the scene and see what needs doing where. :)

Yes, IC. It's sad those movies had to be low-rez tho :weep:.

I see you've might have cut a few corners, no? Some of the large objects look like temporary meshes (help simplify sizing issues?).

Any thoughts on improving upon the original Midgar mesh design? Perhaps it could be ignored until after completion of the original style? Little things like "improving the catwalk to each reactor" or big things like "adding more 'walkable' areas to other sectors"?

    What can I say? I'm a perfectionist.

Actually I started out just making the first part where Aeris comes out, then thought perhaps it would be cool to do the entire thing.  :) The first step was to go through and make rough models, placeholders basically, and sort out their position, then once that was done I started going through and making the high-res versions. The objects that still look like temporary meshes are indeed temporary and are still to be done, but it currently stands at 1,200,000 polys.

I had thought about improving bits here and there in Midgar but I've decided against it, as I have a much better idea up my sleeve once I've finished this off and I wanted to stick to the original. Hence the low poly sector detail in that second shot - if I were to improve on it I'd make it much more city-like, but if you look at opening.avi you'll see the poly count in each sector (look to the right when the camera goes down towards the train station) is in fact quite low so I've modelled what I see. Perhaps when everything's been modelled, lit and shaded correctly, I could try improving bits but my main aim is just to get a nice, accurate model out. :)

I can spend hours moving things left and right a bit until it's 100% to my satisfaction, it's very frustrating :o

It should be interesting to see both when they are finished. Either of you two plan on trying out a different town? :P

Thought so. Hay, it still look cool though!

:o Oh yeah? Hmm... Regardless, its understandable as the detail could never end. Yikes!

    Comes with the job, lol.

Just added my Midgar rendering over @ 3DBuzz.
Remember, I just started last Thrusday! So it's not very complex yet. Some of my other work is shown there too.

It would be awesome if you could turn that into an MMORPG, but I am afraid you'd get sued.

I think a mmorpg would be too much. Best to tack this up as "Fanart"

However if you are planning to re-render the opeining sequence to allow people to have hi-res veriosns of the movies. I would highly suggest you don't, or watermark it in a way that it can't be used as a replacement as the real sequence.

FYI: New Render for "Day 3" on Midgar.

A MMORPG? Not in my FF7 world.
Besides the "being sued" thing, nothing is completed yet! No engine, no scenes, no backdrops, no 'final' renders, no character models, no textures, bla, bla, bla... So, first things first... tons and tons and tons of fan-created materia, I mean, "material".

Well stated Halkun. Personally, I'm thinking up a few UT levels, but doubt I'd go much farther. Defiantly a HiRez wallpaper for my desktop but I really don't know what else.

PS :D Halkun: Thank you for writing "Gears"! An excellent piece of work.

Not at first, but I've been watching "jenova_e.avi" a few time and I just cant let it go. So, I'll probably do the Nibel Reactor next (inside and out). Still, at least, a month and a half away tho.
