XP world map crashing
« on: 2004-11-07 03:36:59 »
After a bit of tweaking, I was able to get ff7 running reasonably on my XP machine with a nvidia 6800 card. Was, that is, until I left Midgar. I cannot seem to play for more than a few minutes on the world map. Currently, I am stuck at the first farm, trying to grab a Chocobo to get across the marsh thing. Every time I try to play though, it is inevitable that a system halting (requireing a reboot) crash occurs.

I can't really say what specifically causes this crash as I am just running around on the world map. Some random battles work fine, as do battles with Chocobos, it seems a completely random crash.

I've been thinking that the only way to get back to the beloved FF7 is by using Win95/98. Alas, after scouring the house for days, I can't find my old windows cds.

Any helpful tips or ideas?

Did you patch to version 1.02? Have you tried running in Compatibility mode?

The game seems to hang in so many different places.. some are random.. some not. There's not really much you can do about it other than posting your save game with the possibility that someone will take you past the bit you are stuck on.

Hmm...

I've known about randomly crashing just before you get to a battle (scene pauses, new music starts, battle swirl appears.. all within a second), and at one of those points, everything freezes up.. but usually i can get out of there and back to windows.

Your crash seems different in that it hangs up your whole system, and doesn't neccisarily[sp?] happen durring a battle, so, i'm stumped.   If this were like 10 years ago, i'd say ff7 was straining your video card... but, uhm, no, lol.

However, try turning off some background processes.  Something may be taking just enough memory to make unning ff7 a mild pain for your comp.

So, yeah,  like jedimark said, 1.02 and compatability mode..

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Unfortunately, I think I've tried about everything. I am running 1.02, have tried all the different compatibility modes as well. I dont frequently have stuff running in the background either, so I doubt that is the problem.

Software vs hardware rendering modes dont seem to make a difference either.

I have been using ff7music, I will try just a straight 1.02 patch and see if that helps.

If one of you wouldnt mind playing my save across the marsh to get me to the cave, I would appreciate it.

Email me at chad.c.collinsATgmailDOTcom and I'll send it to you.

You've been using FF7Music?  Try without, I bet it works.  I've had that problem before with FF7Music too... that's why I put this in the FAQ:

If you are having problems with the game crashing and are using FF7Music, please try running the game without FF7Music before posting.

I'm sure I've read that before, but I must have glossed over it at the time, sorry. I am currently running without ff7music and the game is slightly more playable, i have made it through the cave, grabbed yuffie on the other side, and can get to junon. Unfortunately I still experience some random crashing, thought not as freqently. These crashes are also not the bluescreens i was seeing before, but they might as well be; I cannot recover from them without a reboot.

Every minute I spend replaying this game exponentially increases my desire to dust off the old hardware and build a period-correct pc just to keep FF7 running. I wish I could narrow down the reasons for the crashes, but they seem to be entirely random (and encredibly frustrating).

Any last ideas before I break down and build my "old-games-only" computer?
