Final Fantasy VIII (8): Various Issues
« on: 2005-12-10 03:03:18 »
Before I get in trouble, I tried doing a search on what I'm about to ask and found it rather fruitless.  That being said:

First off, the game runs at like 12 FPS.  Everywhere [except fmv].  I get moments of apparent game lucidity where it picks up the pace and goes back to a respectable frame rate however they're rare and only last a few seconds.  Does anyone know of a patch or fix for this?

Second, high resolution!  Can someone tell me please if a high resolution patch similar to The Saint's for Final Fantasy VII (7) has been created for Final Fantasy VIII ( 8 )?  If so, can you also point me to the nearest download link?

Lastly, is it just me or do the in game models of the cities (from world map perspective) truely suck?  The gardens look so shoddy it's nearly unbearable.  I don't remember them looking this bad on the PS version.  Does anyone know if perhaps someone has found some way to make these look better (either by way of patching out the old models with some different ones or some tweak or something)?

That's all I have to ask :)  Thanks for takin' the time and any links or information you can post for me would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and one more question, how in the HELL do you quit the game, lol?!

I'm sitting here looking through all the damn menu options and I don't see quit anywhere!  Every time I want to leave I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL out and close the process!

1:
Not sure about the framerate issue, other than how's your computer?  Didn't post any specs.  Did you try software and hardware rendering?

2:
Nope... at least none that I know of.

3:
Yes, they never really looked that good.

4:
I believe CTRL+Q is to quit, or ALT+F4 should do the same.

I hadn't thought of using Software Rendering.  When I switched it on I noticed a marked improvement in general areas without a lot of stuff going on however it was still slow in battles and such.  However, I noticed that I had bilinear filtering on so I switched back to hardware rendering and shut that off and it's given me overall the performance I'm looking for with the exception of the world map.  Whenever I'm on the world map things are still slow as could be.

Computer Specs:
1.7ghz PM
1GB Memory
Intel eXtreme Graphics 2

It's a tablet PC so it's not the fastest of beasts but it should be able to handle the graphics on this game without issue.  I really would like to know what's causing the darn slowdown!

As for the models, damn, I must have a rotten memory because I remember them looking better in the PS version.  Oh and thanks for reminding me about Alt+F4.  I was hoping there would be a quit option though similar to Final Fantasy VII PC, but I suppose not.  In any case no big deal.  And damn too about the no high-res patches, that would be nice.   :(

There is.  They just decided not to implament the quit option.  CTRL+Q is the offical way to quit out of the game, as is said in the maual if I remember correctly.

Anyway, it seems that it's your "graphics card". extreme graphics, in a word, stinks.  The overall preformance of these "video cards" is still well below any card release in the past 5 years or so.  The ram and processor are fine.  If you have a AGP slot (not sure what a tablet PC is in all honsety), you should be able to upgrade your graphics card for FF8 for under $30 or so at places such as newegg.  If you only have free PCI slots you should be able to upgrade for around that much as well.

Well i agree with what what Modem said about teh GFX Card... $30-$50 AUD (not sure where youre from) will get you a 128MB graphics card for AGP, if you have PCI-Express then you could go for something more dear, but alot better.. say a Nvidia 6800 pci-e (256MB) they're about $200 AUD... Also you should check your BIOS settings, there is an option somewhere in there for Video Buffering normally.. Set it to the highest you can... On my old PC it was on 1MB, i changed it to 8MB and FF8 ran perfectly. :)

Just looked it up... and since it's basically everything but a laptop, I'm affriad you're stuck.  Don't think hardware render will do much at all, so software is about all you have as an option.  Tablet pc's are mostly just... well... they're not really for gaming from what I've seen.

Only thing you can pretty much try is to upgrade any drivers on your tablet pc, but seeing as FF8 is about 6 years old, I'm afriad I don't have much hope for that.

A third option is perhaps you'd have better luck spending $10 on a PS version (even if you don't have a PSX), then ripping it to a ISO and running it with ePSXe or something.  Check out the forums at NGEMU if you have questions about the PSX version.  Trust me, FF8 is one of the most asked PSX games there (along with every other FF game, Chrono Trigger and any Square game out there for the psx), so finding any info about it won't be hard.
