Official answer from Nvidia - FF8 texture issue
« on: 2006-07-29 23:52:27 »
Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

Current NVIDIA GPUs do not support paletted textures in hardware or software anymore. The Game Developer will need to prepare to emulate these functions by some fragment program, compressed textures or dependent texture lookups, etc.

Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care.

So, I guess we need a good game hacker to fix this issue.
I never had these problems with FF7.
I ust cant live with playin the hame in software mode...gives me a big "no" feeling.

Oh, BTW...
Hi, I'm new to posting but a long time reader here.
I'm a net tech in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. (And a long-time old school gamer)

I think that's fairly common knowledge here.

But maybe not...I mean, even I knew that recent nVidia GPUs (as with most recent video cards) no longer supported paletted textures. That's why there used to be (still is?) many topics about why the configuration program always fails the 8-Bit Paletted Texture feature.

EDIT: Oops. Forgot to add that at least in Final Fantasy VII (not sure about VIII), you could use RivaTuner to fix the issue. At least that's what I did.

Sorry if it had been covered elsewhere...
I posted this because i did not find a true answer, lots of guesses, but no true answer.
So I went and got one.
Its not windows, not just drivers, but the newer cards no longer support this in hardware.
