I discussed this somewhere else...I'm sure.
Anyway, I know, definitely, that the 6.50 drivers work perfect, with FF8. the 12.41 may work, too.....but I'm not certain. (I had the 12.41 working with FF7....but I forgot to try it with FF8)
.....The 6.50 drivers are not self-installing, like the newer XP drivers....
Along with the 6.50 drivers, your going to need the Geforce patch for FF8:
http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_temp.asp?patch=ff8And your going to need a Detonator uninstaller. And maybe the driver?
YOu can find both the unistaller and the Drivers here:
http://www.guru3d.com/download/Look on the text on the left....look for Detonator Destroyer....you may want to download Rivatuner as well....I think you can find the driver on your own.
The directions of the uninstaller (which are in a readme file) are to use the ADD/Remove programs to unload the Nvidia Drivers, and not to restart when it asks you to. You then run the uninstaller program, Ok....after doing that you should be rebooting....When Windows pops up, it will automaticly load the a VGA driver, then it will look for the the Geforce Driver. When it promps you for help....keep pushing canceling (If that set of buttons isn't displayed, push the esc button, you should see a list of buttons after doing so), you'll have do this quite a bit. like 15 times or so. When it finally asks you to reboot, say "NO".
You should be in windows, now...and the colors and desktop size should be a little screwed up.....this is normal.
(follow this part of the readme file of the 6.50 drivers from this point on)
To install the drivers
1 Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
2 Double-click Display, and click the Settings tab.
3 Click Advanced, click the Adapter tab, then click Change.
4 Click Next, click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, then click Next.
5 Click Have Disk, select or type the path to the folder containing the driver files, then click OK. Windows should find files for your NVIDIA graphics chip. If Windows cannot find the files, check that the path name for the driver files is correct.
6 If Windows found the files, click OK, then click Next. Windows copies the files to the hard disk.
7 Click Finish, click Apply, then click Close.
8 Click Yes when Windows asks if you wish to restart the computer.
....this should also work with the self installing drivers....minus the , "install the drivers", section above.....hope I'm not too confusing. I just said that in case you ever want to change back....to faster drivers....and you will if you have newer games. With the self installing type...you just double click on the executable.
After all this is done...you just have to reset your Desktop size and your Colors (It'll be in 256 color mode by default), and your back in operation.
------------
I can get the 21.81 drivers to work with FF7....but FF8 gets black squares around objects......I think the 6.50 drivers are the only solution....and maybe the 12.41's. But I'm not certain of the 12.41's.
Now, back to the 23.11 news.....
I found a place to get in contact with the creator of Rivatuner.
http://www.guru3d.com/forum/list_forum.php?forumid=ubb11And he has already made a new database for 23.11, I haven't tried it yet...but I'm sure once the 8bit pallet options is disabled, FF7 will work fine, again. And maybe....with FF8, the black boxes will go away, I doubt it though. You need Rivatuner20RC8.1. He should have 8.2 real soon.....it solves a bug that 8.1 has.....just don't mess with any AGP setting inside 8.1. (you only need it to disable that 8 bit thing)
