I think I know what you're talking about, TimmyP. Back when I was using my AWE64, I'd get that same "Failed" message every so often. I noticed that a lot of the time it happened when I was testing the different MIDI ports available, since I was rapidly switching devices in the drop-down box. It seems just to be an intermittent problem. Usually, clicking cancel on the config, then reopening the config, and taking your time on switching the selected device, can work.
Don't be so trigger happy on the "test" button. I suggest waiting a good 4-5 seconds after selecting the port, then clicking the test button.
Why am I asking you to wait? Because my theory is that the program was probably still checking the card's amount of available SF-RAM (to see which size soundfont the card can use), when you clicked "test", which means it hadn't selected one of the four soundfonts to use yet. I believe clicking "test" tells the program to ping the car'ds SF-RAM for whether or not the soundfont is loaded, and the card reported back something like "No soundfont loaded". The MIDI interface must have then screeched to a stop with the "failed" error then.
Remember, when it says "failed", it doesn't necessarily mean "it failed to play", but it could mean "your card failed to load the soundfont".
-edit-
Darn spelling errors!
Oh, and welcome to the board, TimmyP.
