suggestion: extended materia mod

Hi all - great site!

One of the things I always found annoying in the original FF7 was the limit of 200 materia in the party inventory. I know the game doesn't require more than that to beat, but I thought it was fun to master a bunch of different ones and test out different combos against the Weapons later on. I think the cap should be at the theoretical maximum of what a player might want to accomplish, even if pretty much nobody ever would. So, roughly speaking,

green: 22 kinds * 3 (active) players * 8 (possibly useful) slots
red: 17 kinds * 3 players * 8 slots
blue: 13 kinds * 3 players * 8 slots
yellow: 14 kinds * 3 players
purple: 16 kinds * 3 players * 2 slots + 3 players * 8 slots for "counter attack"
room for newborns of every type: 80

total: about 1500 total "inventory materia" spaces.

Of course, it might take quite a while to navigate the materia menu with so many slots. Ideally you would want the menu to expand based on how many materia you possess. Or, materia of the same level could stack into the same space, so that if you have 24 mastered "Counter-Attack" materias, you simply see the one "Counter-Attack" with the quantity listed to the right. But I am just wondering if anyone ever thought to extend the materia space, is it possible to mod the game this way? Thanks!

This would be quite hard to implement. Whether you have the PSX or PSOne versions in mind, you would need to heavily edit the executable. With the PSOne versions, because the code is banked in from MNU overlays on an ad-hoc basis, it can be quite hard to trace the logic with a debugger. To put things into context, we're currently having trouble finding a way to add a 'Load Game' option to the field menu.
