Improving ff8 resolution...
« on: 2003-08-14 02:13:28 »
Is it possable? I mean... 640X480 isnt quite my thing, I'd prefer if I could run it in 800X600 or 1024X768 (thats how high my TV goes, so I really dont care how much higher it -could- go :P)

I mean, on the monitor it looks like CRAP at 640X480, on the tv its alright, but is it possable to go higher?

Sir Canealot...

Shutup, you didn't have to read this, and if its a waste of bandwidth, thats your problem, not mine.

Anyway, thx for not burning me Rubicant and Mofokubik, I didn't know they were similar... but...

If you think about it...

How could it be possable?

I mean... even if you did manage to do it, the character positioning would be off, because the backgrounds would be stretched... and you'd be running into walls without knowing it... I think :P

I think, if you really must play FF8 in a higher resolution, you should play the PSX version in ePSXe.

And even then...playing the PSX version at a higher resolution doesn't look that great. And as you know, the higher the resolution, the slower the performance. The current GPU plugins that are out have not perfected the special effects, such as the battle fade-in. So your best bet still is to run the PC version at 640x480. Everything is displayed better, and it will have no problems (considering it's designed for PC).

Running it at a higher resolution (PC version) could cause a number of problems for the fonts, and other 2d things, such as menus. There would be no problems for the full 3d scenes, but I'm sure the movies would be displayed incorrectly, and the 2d backgrounds may or may not stretch. The easy way would to get the source code. Like that's gonna happen.  -_-

Knowing what I do of both the PC and PSX versions, the PC version of FF8 is better overall to run than the PSX emulated version as with the PSX version, although you get better default music, and the ability to run in higher rezzes, there are a number of things the PC versions gets over it:
  • Perspective correction: Textures don't warp
  • Sub-pixel accuracy: the characters more correctly in 320 and in 640. The PSX version is limited to the character coordinates of 320x244 upsampled making them move like a clockwork knight
  • Upgradable DLS soundfonts
  • Higher resoloution FMVs[/list:u]Your best option is to enable FSAA. Higher resoloutions isn't realisticly possible with the way the PC version was written from what I understand.
